To be a proper Peacock the well-dressed man will have both in his outfit arsenal, as to be prepared to shine for every occasion. And the team at USA Kilts have a nice selection of what appear to be good quality Garter Ties for us to choose from and they're not expensive. They look cool and it's one more way to stand out from the crowd, so Peacock on Brothers of the Tartan.
I wore garter ties last weekend at the Tallahassee highland games, purchased from usakilts! The ties were ancient green and I wore them with brown kilt hose.
I purchased two pair of garter ties 'AND' elastic with clips (That come with flashes). I cut and sewed the water ties to the elastic. Out from under the sock rollover, no one knows they are not tied and held with the elastic and clips.
+USAKiltsOfficial *Thanks for the stylist perspective.* I find garter ties simpler to attach to hose. Of course, flashes are available in downscaled Tartan patterns.
I like the look at the garter ties a little more I think, but I prefer the user-friendly Ness of the flashes. That’s why my next set of garter ties will be basically just flashes that look like garter ties.
Though I order the flashes, I always wear garter ties. The flashes are an approximation of the original garter ties, in my opinion, I think the garter ties look better.
I got my first pair of garter ties a few months ago. After a bit of a learning curve to tie them the way I want, I now prefer them to flashes. I now have 5 colors and plan to get the rest that USA Kilts offers as time and money allow.
There’s something more authentic to the highland dress, less modernised with the garter ties. It’s nice not to have the bog-standard attitude to a kilt, especially if you’re a Scotsman like me. We see plenty of kilts worn badly, even by people who pay premium for an outfit made. I think garter ties add a subtle flair and individuality, even if it does come across to some as peacocking.
I have flashes to match all my custom kilts, but no longer wear them. Garter ties are entirely authentic by comparison, and much more preferable, so for me there is no question. They also do a great job of holding the hose up, where elastic can be floppy and unreliable when they give out. I don't care for them at all, especially the horrible metal catches. The only problem is getting ties compatible with your tartan, although that's a small point that would only catch the eye of the most critical observer. The ties that come supplied with shooting socks are usually perfect for your kilt hose.
Garter ties for the win.

Garter Ties are all I wear now.

I find the garter ties more comfortable than the elastic on the standard style flashes. Just wish somebody would make an extra length version.
I wear ties much more frequently than flashes.

I agree.
I agree with you also Mike.
I wear garter ties when I do historical reenacting and I can see how they’d be a comfortable option.
Someone a while back said that Garter Ties were more comfortable than Flashes, but honestly I haven't noticed a difference.
Once I went garter ties, I never looked back.
I like garter ties better
Can garter ties be worn OUTSIDE the hose for a casual or rustic look?
Wear what you like, I say. But do try both as the occasion presents itself.
Since going to garter ties I've boxed up and put away my flashes.
