actually breaks my heart when I learn someone today has no idea about Motown and groups like The Temptations... but makes me smile when they first discover what we've known for decades to be the greatness that it is.

The Motown studio musicians were known as the Funk Brothers. The bass line is being played by one of them, the great James Jameson.
Even though you’re seeing them on Soul Train in front of an almost exclusively black crowd, their music was every bit as popular with white kids also. That was true about all the Motown performers.

Jameson wasn't the bass on this track. I've always thought it was Bob Babbitt but I've read it was Malvin "Wah Wah Watson" Ragin. The Funk Brothers worked like an automobile factory with different shifts so there was always something happening in Studio A. It was after this track that Motown moved to LA & began using the Wrecking Crew. Babbitt played bass on Ball of Confusion, recorded in this same period. While checking on this I discovered something I did not know, that Babbitt played the bass on The Rubberband Man, by the Spinners who had gone over to Atlantic. So when Motown went west Babbitt for the most part went east.

The musicians were the incomparable Funk Brothers, many oF whom played in Detroit jazz clubs when Berry Gordy brought them together at Motown.

When I started playing a bit of bass guitar a few years ago, my liking of this song really grew. It's a relatively simplistic bass part but STILL, it requires perfect timing and technique. There is definitely nothing simplistic about those great harmonies though. The Temptations are Legends!

'The Temps' as we called them. Thanks for getting to them. I saw them back in the day, all their songs were thrilling, their harmonies and dance moves fantastic. Loved all their voices but especially Dennis Edwards', you should check him doing 'Don't Look Any Further' with Siedah Garret.

Your right! Kids your age have NO idea about all the great music that they have missed. People played instruments, singers had God given talent, and you couldnt not dance. Today it is all electronic foolery and auto-tune, and nasty lyrics.

A companion piece to this song is by Gladys Knight & the Pips 'Daddy Could Swear I Declare'.
Yes The Temptations were probably the best but we had tons of great soul/r&b bands back then, The Four Tops, Stylistics, Delfonics, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, The Dramatics, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, The Commodores, Chi-Lites, Spinners

Lots of good recommendations being made and you can't go wrong with any of them. My personal favorite is "Just My Imagination". The song "My Girl" is a great one, too. Another Motown group you should check out is The Spinners. They had the same great mix of voices and strong harmonies and I think you would enjoy them.
