If only you could play at my grandfathers funeral the first week of January next year. Alexander (Sandy) Lawson. 91 years old. Will be sorely missed.

We’re learning this tune in our beginners fiddle Zoom lessons. I shared this amazing version with my new fiddle friends across the pond. They said, “Just saw the link and played it...just WOW! Thanks for sharing. I had a laugh because J said the history was interesting...I couldn’t understand a single word!!” and “I laughed too because I listened 3 times to the history before I understood everything he said. it was sooo.. beautiful! Thank you Jeannette. Definitely inspirational and something to aim for.” Haha - my grandparents were Scots and so this accent is exactly what I grew up hearing.and it didn’t occur to me that they’d struggle! To be fair, we’ll all struggle more with playing like that but, as they said, beautiful & inspirational!

I play violin in Australia. I am exploring Scottish fiddle music but there is not a lot of good quality stuff out there to go from and when people write scottish( any folk music) it gets lost in translation because there is no stsyematic way to record what makes it so different. I used to live in Edinburgh but was only just starting to play violin then. Regardless you need to keep recording- this really is the best version I have heard. Ive spent all night researching the piece 'Hector the Hero' because the string ensemble I play in wants to write an arrangement and add maybe a couple of other pieces to make it a set buy I am really unconfident that we can do it justice- not sure how to get the ornamentation sp everyone can do it in sync but not sound like plastic... I dont know lol....... Oh and your accent is sooo strong- play your videos back and put the captions on underneath if you want a laugh- computer has no idea what you are saying lol Anyway, the long and short of it is that I get nervous playing classical violin and thought maybe the styles that require more interpretation and performer input might help me feel calmer when playing in front of people- hence traditional folk music :-) :-) :-)

@@barbr4949 just heading out but I'll try to give you a detailed reply sometime over the next couple of days. Playing with and having lessons from good exponents makes a huge difference; failing that listening to as much good traditional playing as you can (there's some real crap as well as good stuff so be careful). Hector MacAndrew is a good place to start for Scots fiddle but a limited amount on RUclips.
