Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks were very underrated
This was actually my first Zelda game and I remember getting this game as a kid and getting stuck on the timed dungeons (bc I wasn’t the brightest girl) and quitting, then randomly finding the game several years later and replayed the whole thing and to this day it’s one of my favourite Zelda games.
Same it was also my first Zelda game
i had literally the exact same experience with this game lol. the puzzles and mechanics are so well done i'm glad i got to appreciate them properly later in life
There’s no shame in needing to break from Temple of the Ocean King. The first playthrough is incredibly difficult since you’re not going to know what you’re doing, which eats time. I played it alongside my mom and brother as a teen and…yeah. We had to keep buying potions since we ran out of time or got hit by phantoms (and got time penalties. In the end I don’t think either of them finished the game. (I have. I actually like that place, but it gets enjoyable right about the time you finally get bombchus so you can hit switches and phantom eyes and make shortcuts from safezones. Or scout things out but don’t actually send off a chu)
I also had the EXACT same expirience xD
My only question is that like, I remember one part where you had to close the ds to transfer a map but I don't feel like watching that far to find out how it happens, I just saw this in the timeline and wanted to feel nostalgia. It was my first zelda game and the first one I've ever beaten, such a fun experience and also one of my favorites :)
My first Zelda games were this and spirit tracks, sadly I lost the spirit tracks DS card.
I for one REALLY hope to see you play Spirit Tracks. Aside from being (literally) on rails in the overworld, it improves on just about every aspect of Phantom Hourglass. It also has by far the greatest overworld theme in any Zelda game and probably my favorite rendition of Princess Zelda. Absolutely in my top 3 Zelda games.
I especially liked what they did with Zelda in Spirit Tracks, i wish more of the games would do something similair.
Yea I loved spirit tracks as a kid, but I lost the game card when I moved from England to Australia 😢.
This brings back memories. Not long after Phantom Hourglass' release, my mom talked me into buying it together with her. It was our first Zelda and got us into the series (and games in general). Played the whole thing together, always switching who plays and who watches. I remember that we got stuck on the last boss fight for several days, but I got it eventually haha. Watching this made me fall in love with the game all over again. It's so much better than people online make it out to be. Thanks for the playthrough! :)

Phantom Hourglass is so good. I wish it got more recognition, sure it had backtracking with the temple part but it still was pretty fun and has good story and writing.

Truly the most underrated loz game of all time.
Handheld Zelda in general is incredibly underrated. It’s also far more ambitious with aspects of the “traditional formula” and mechanics…buuut since everyone’s so focused on the N64-onward consoles, the handheld titles don’t get much recognition within the Zelda community. (I am STILL suspicious of all the Zeldatubers claiming LA was “their first/their favorite” when the Switch Remake was announced, as they literally never talked about it, ever. Oracles, PH, and ST got talked about even less (unless it was to complain about PH and ST…but bending over backwards to defend the godawful camera in OoT and gimmick mechanic of SS because “main console bias again” ig.) Sometimes Minish Cap is mentioned…but not much. Just more than the other handhelds.)
I'd love to watch you play spirit tracks! I have only played phantom hourglass myself and realy want to see it's continuation :)

@@zanzaroon6961 wind waker sold over 2 million more copies than phantom hourglass lol it’s not the worst performing Zelda game by far but it sold like 4 million copies on a console that Nintendo sold over 150 million of.
Phantom Hourglass is one of my favourite Zelda games! Glad to see it getting some respect.
I'm watching this almost 2 years after posting and it breaks my heart that I see no Spirit Tracks playthrough on the VOD channel. I really hope Eric decides to play it one day!

Phantom Hourglass was also my first Zelda game. Hourglass and Spirit Tracks make up such a lovely part of my childhood. I really glad I found your VODS channel because I loved watching this play through. I really hope you continue the series and play Spirit Tracks next!
At 1:05:40 the chat references "The Emperor's New Clothes" which is a fable about how an emperor gets scammed by a "well-renowned" seamstress who gave him nothing but said you can only see it if you are faithful to the gods but it is very beautiful. Him and every adult pretended they can see it so that everyone around them would believe they are faithful to the gods. But then a child who was too young to be unfaithful pointed out that he's not wearing anything at which point everybody realized the emperor got scammed.
Still living on the hopes that he might do Spirit Tracks someday soon :') Best incarnation of Zelda of all the games don't @ me
I was in HMV (UK store that closed down ages ago now) and while my Dad was looking at LP's I wandered into the gaming part of the store and this game was on one of the trial DS stations. I'd never heard of Zelda before (I think I was maybe 11? And the DS was my first console). The game was started and was after the cutscene of washing up on the beach so I was running around on the beach by Oshus' house, throwing the barrels around etc. I thought it was a cute game and asked my Dad to get it for me. I had NO IDEA what I was getting into with the puzzles, logic, lore, crippling anxiety. But I managed to finish it over the course of about a year and I was just mindblown at how good it was. It really opened up my brain to logical thinking and funnily, probably one of the smaller reasons I took a Computer Science degree because I realised I loved logic etc.
Whenever you said "THAT'S SO COOL" it just made 11 y/o me feel heard when she was babbling on about this to her "friends" and they just wanted to play Super Mario Bros because they were cooler than me.
So many people turn their nose up when I say this was my first Zelda bc it's not "as good" as Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask but it really is a hidden gem in the franchise so it makes me proud little 11 y/o me asked to buy it in HMV
I really hope you do spirit tracks next! I have PH but as a kid I got so anxious with Ocean Temple and time; I was one of those people who would rather die in Mario than get to the music for when you had 100 seconds or fewer remaining

I just wana give a shoutout to my man, Linebeck.
He may be a coward, but deep within there is a brave warrior of the sea, and he has always been that way, in a side quest you learn from Joleens sister that she is, in fact, a brave fighter, and she sees Linebeck as her equal, she is so obsessed with him, because she knows he is brave, but he refuses to agnowladge his worth.
In my head cannon, after the events of PH, Linebeck and Joleen meet up and rekindle their relationship, have a kid, and that kid grows up to be a merchant in new Hyrule, who then has a kid named Linebeck the 3rd.
So glad I got a chance to watch this game!
I'm not a fan of this game play style myself, so I wouldn't have ever played it. But I've always been super curious about it. So many cute and funny moments throughout the story, and great dialogue. Thanks for sharing with us💙💙💙
You have to try spirit tracks next its so underrated
The nostalgia was too much for me that I had to go play it myself and finish the very first Zelda game I played in my childhood. I didn't finish it the first time (got stuck at the "transfer seal" quest back then but now I freaking love it many years later) but this time I finally managed to! Really love this game to bits and will be playing Spirit Tracks next, as well as watching your playthrough of it for sure if there ever is one in the future~
Imagine dual wielding link with the master sword and the phantom sword, I don’t think it can happen but it’s something to wonder about

I aggre when you say that thia zelda PH uses all the nintendo Dee Ess funcions in a way that no other game does for the console, that how I made i friend get in to this game, greatins from México
I couldnt tell you how many years it was when I got this game, but it took me so long to realize that the "figure eight" is an actual 8 and not an infinity symbol. So I spent years trying to beat the final boss and couldn't because of that. This game was my first of the series I played when I was a kid, and I love this game a lot, but It can seriously fustrate me at times :p
Nice playthrough! If you ever replay it, you can select one of the drops if you seclected 10 or 20 of them ;) Then something happens!

The fact that the first X and O puzzle starts off as all X, one move away from being completed, makes it so much funnier that he spent like 5 minutes struggling with it

phantom hourglass was my first zelda game and I hate how underrated it is. It's honestly perfect for what it was built to be: a beginner's game for new Zelda players and a game to showcase the DS. I've played this game at least 10 times now and I can see why people might not like the Temple of the Ocean King looking back on it but in my opinion the temples you beat for the three pure metals (especially the ice temple oh my god) more than make up for it in my book. And three floors for the final boss arena??? My little kid brain was mind blown. Phantom Hourglass is a great game and I don't care if not many people would agree.

I really loathed Spirit Tracks and Phantom Hourglass, but watching you play them is a lot more enjoyable.
All of the innovative puzzles that used DS features and the whole steam engine revolution thing they both had going didn't jive well with me in terms of Zelda games.
It felt like they just crammed every feature of the DS onto it not to make the game better, but to showcase the DS, just as they did with that one Star Fox game on Wii U.
Again, watching you play them is a lot more fun than actually playing them.
I always hated the microphone. It wasn’t too awful on a DS, but the 3DS line? Ugh. Where is that thing. Is that it? I can’t look at the screen at all which is a Problem in ST…
