      this album makes you feel those thoughts youve been hiding from yourself. it lets you take those thought out in a safe environment and tame them into being submissive only until the music calls upon it again
      try listening to we lost the seas album :the quietest place on earth . after this one. they go perfect into each other with these powerful lyrics that eat your heart like a starving beast

    Guys.. I really heard alot of Post-Rock-Releases. But the Departure Songs is - studio and live - the most beautiful and most intense record on the whole planet.

    I've listened to this set so much that when I go to listen to any other version of Challenger, I'm surprised when I don't hear "dehydration" at 47:45... sounds absolutely stunning with the choir.

    Track 1-A gallant gentleman
    It pays homage to Lawrence Oates, a captain and member of the Robert Falcon Scott South Pole Expedition, which tried to be the first humans in history to reach that point of the world. They found out that another team had achieved this before, leaving them no choice but to return to their base in this bleak land. The sound feels cold, but the guitars start to get louder and heavier followed by a vocal choir, representing the journey of these men to return; even when facing death or severe injuries. Captain Lawrence Oates, the most afflicted men of the crew (he developed gangrene due to frostbite), decided to go against the words of his fellow members and left the resting tent. As his life disappears in the middle of the snow, so is the intensity of the song, until you can only hear the vocal choir.
    Track 2-bogatyri
    Valeri Bezpalov, Alexie Ananenko and Boris Baranov, known as the “suicide squad” who volunteered to sacrifice their life to open the sluice gates of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant to release the radiated water found on the bubbler pools that could lead to another explosion if mixed with materials that were found on that part of the plant, causing another disaster. With only diving suits and a lamp, they descended into the gates. This song starts to build up its impending doom, leaving room for the guitars and drums to crescent in their sound as the only source of light they had was lost in the process. It crushes you with a darkened, almost claustrophobic sound, only to end with fading guitars that represent their life which were reduced to mere days.
    Track 3-the last dive of David Shaw
    You might wonder what is the sound clip found on the first minutes of “The Last Dive of David Shaw”, and the answer is: A video available on RUclips which has the same name of the song, and it’s exactly what it says. These are the last moments of Australian diver David John Shaw, trying to rescue the body of fellow diver Deon Dreyer, who attempted to break the diving record of almost 250 meters (feat which Shaw accomplished). As the sound clip ends, and the guitars start to once again kick in, followed by drums and then cellos, you descend with David as the song starts to get colder and darker. Then a few moments of tranquility are found in this song (which I think they match the moment in which Shaw finds the body and starts the rescue), only to be assaulted with a breathtaking blast of sound that builds and builds for minutes representing the last minutes of this diver who attempted to rescue a fellow comrade that tried to do the same thing that he did, failing in the process ten years ago. (If you watch the video, he got stuck while trying to pull the body out of a cave). A few days later, both bodies were found on the surface.
    Track 4-challenger part 1-Flight
    one of the worst tragedies of the American space program: the Challenger disaster, which happened in 1986, took the life of 7 people (6 astronauts and Christa McAuliffe, a teacher) as the space shuttle disintegrated into air, leaving all of its watchers in a shock of grief and despair.
    Track 5-challenger part 2-A swan song
    This is the final eulogy to these men, and to everyone who gave their life for different reasons. You hear the guitars, the bass, keys, cymbals and drums but there is no tragedy to be found here, only beautiful melodies and a powerful crescendo. You’ve followed this journey for almost 58 minutes to fall back into reality and realize that this is humanity at its purest and honest time. As Ronald Reagan addresses the nation after the Challenger disaster, you’re left with this message: “we will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them, this morning, as they prepared for their journey and waved goodbye and “slipped the surly bonds of earth” to “touch the face of God.”

    I went to one of their concerts about a year ago in Mainz, Germany, and it was indescribably beautiful. Someone else in this section described it "like i was high. it was like a trance" and I could not agree more. Their music and this album particularly is absolutely incredible art on its own, but experiencing it live, it truly puts you in another state of mind. Rarely have I ever had a piece of art resonate with my own emotions so fiercely as this has. Thank you, truly!

    You guys are absolutely amazing!!!!
    i discovered this vid a week ago when you tube randomly played it on autoplay. i've watched it in full 3 times now. the first time i saw and heard WLTS was at the Apocalypitca concert! i feel so lucky to have seen you guys live! even tho i didn't know any of the songs i found the gig mesmerising!!!! I was hooked by the time bass boomed in in bogatyri.
    I missed Northcote because we already had a holiday to 12 Apostles planned but i played WLTS all weekend and now i'm so very happy to say that when i hear Challenger part 1 it reminds me of the 12 apostles and running all over the Loch Ard Gorge in wind and rain and sleet. A time i will never forget. PS the last 8mins of Challenger part 1 just about makes my head explode everytime i hear it. Insane!!!!!

    I just discovered you guys & this album. Im blown away. Thank you for creating such amazing music! I had read about David Shaw & although diving scares me to death, found the story of his last dive to be so incredible. Finding your song about it (the rest of your music) is equally as incredible to me. Thank you again

    Discovered the band by this album a while ago. Music means everything to me in life, and this album struck a great chord in my soul. The fact I cannot find the album on vinyl (except for some idiot on Discogs who ask A LOT for it) really bugs me.
    Recently I have openend up to letter my inner creativity out more (i've held myself back for years, long story, party healthproblems), and this music really helps me now in expressing myself in poetry and theatrical ideas (i am writing a script).
    So above all, thank you guys!

      Thank you soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much. Including the shipping this thing will still cost me quite some (i have very low income, and including shipping this is near €50) but this music can move me so good, it kept me going in bad times (like since last November, when I had brainsurgery after years of neurological problems).

      How did you go? Did you get them? i have been there! i now have the entire collection on vinyl. wasn't easy. did you try we lost the sea on bandcamp? that's where i picked up Crimea. I like you, looked on discogs. i paid a small fortune for Departure songs, but as my most played record i do not regret it a single day.

      I eventually ordered it via Translation Loss, it should arrive next month, and I am bloody happy I found it there. The rest of their albums will probably come later on, I unfortunatly have to live on a comparetively little income, but Departure Songs was a no-brainer for me. I kept going in life because of this album, the last year cost me a bit of my brain (litteraly), but gained me so much more musical love, i wouldn't change it.
