  • The sound of the iconic Huey helicopter is unmistakable to a Vietnam veteran.
The rhythmic thumping of the rotors is hypnotic and often takes vets back in time to when they served during the Vietnam War.
"In Vietnam, almost every veteran has a story to tell about a Huey," said Jim Haga, president of Liberty War Birds, a nonprofit based in the Lititz, PA.
The Vietnam veteran believes reuniting his fellow vets with the Huey could be cathartic. Just getting back into a helicopter, albeit not a Huey at the time, and flying again helped Haga who struggled with late onset PTSD. That's why he founded Liberty War Birds.
"I realized there was an opportunity there to help other vets connect with the aircraft. It might be healing for some of them, but it's always a choice. I just wanted to give them the opportunity. That's what Liberty War Birds is all about, trying to get this aircraft in front of veterans, in a sense to give them the opportunity to reconnect and to just honor them."

The Huey was never just a machine! She was the soldier's lifeline, the desperate help when needed, his best friend when hurt, and his saviour who brought him home. She was the right aircraft,at the right time, and will forever be honoured by all who knew her.

I was the photographer for the 52nd CAB in 1970. I deeded 1100+ photos and yearbook, to include the 170th, to Texas Tech, and it is now on line.

Greatest helicopter ever built, PERIOD!! I mean, Aesthetically, from engineering stand of point, it's a revolutionary machine too that changed the way war was fought. Amazing machine. Always been my dream to be flown on one of them some day.

I am sure that you have the background on the 170th AHC, but if not. I was The 52nd Aviation Battn photographer, of which the 170th was part. They were based in Kontum, north of Pleiku, which is where the 52nd was stationed at Camp Holloway. Many times when there was a “FOB” (fly over boarder) mission it was given to the 170th. They were part of the Dak To, Dak Seang and other actions. They were an accomplished unit.

Someone said: " The image and sound of helicopters Huey UH - 1 is a part of Vietnam war ". Yes, it is true as for me personally.
The image and sound of helicopters Huey UH - 1 starting up, taking off and landing everyday at a small helicopter airport in front of my Quoc Hoc high school after " TET Mau Than " 1968 have engraved upon my mind. And many Huey UH - 1 helicopters were shot down by V.C from 1968 to end of Vietnam war.
Especially, I saw directly a crash of a Huey UH - 1 right after taking off and was sunk deep at the bottom of Huong Giang river in Hue city ( behind the Quoc Hoc stone stele ), very very sorrowful there was a pilot of VNAF died at that time.

Military service should be the one requirement to hold public office and to vote, civilians are hard on Veterans and their saying 'thank you' is BS and as a slap in our faces. US ARMY 1968-71

I totally agree! The fiction story,"Starship Troopers",based in the future, sets the procedure for public service, and citizenship, service with the military. Only men and women who have struggled and fought their way through this service can appreciate sacrifice and duty, and consequently commit themselves to the protection and honour of their country. The national flag, and all too often, bloodshed,go hand in hand, how much blood you are prepared to shed for your country,is the measure of your love for that country.

Huey was working horse and fighting horse
You, American left the war, we VNAF lack of parts for our horse
we made our horse work harder and harder and work non stop day and night
work until it run out of steam
from the air, one can see a lot of helicopter
but there are about fourty percent of them are flyable the rest for spare parts
Huey helicopter save a lot of life and labor
sometimes we use it to get home to see our loved ones

It's a shame that the US military does not maintain a small fleet of historical flying aircraft. They just can't seem get the political will to do anything about it. The worst part is in the next 100 years there wont even be aircraft such as the F-15 and 16 could ever fly because those will never be allowed in non military hands.

Yeah, bigger, faster, and more lame the Blackhawk is. When the last Blackhawk hits the boneyards, a Huey and crew will be there to fly the Blackhawk's crew home.
