- New figures - from a range of sources - have been published revealing the disturbing growth of a two-tier Britain. While some areas of the country are enjoying the fruits of an - albeit slow - economic recovery, many others are being left behind.
Thanks to my lovely neglectful mother, I went without breakfast. Thankfully the school had morning breakfast (cereal and milk no questions asked). I filled up on two cereals and two milks every morning. It was a godsend. Did very well in school.

Why are these people buying processed junk food?! That's the most expensive stuff in the store. A little common sense would go a long way. My mom always bought tons of vegetables, rice, beans, and cereals like oats. She cooked our meals and taught me how to cook.

@@DizzyKizzy64 There is no way. I’m not just talking about fresh foods. I’m including canned goods and frozen. See my comment above. You will always save money avoiding prepackaged and junk foods and cooking meals from scratch.
I think this generation is not only not making it financially but even if they did have the money I don't think a lot of women nowadays know how to cook. They know how to run a microwave and they can boil water for mac & cheese but as far as putting together an actual meal without using processed foods is foreign to them.
I know they are poor but the calories aren't adequate because they are eating crap. I GUARANTEE you I could feed these kids on a bare to none budget.
But it needs to be cooked. Beans, rice, stock, root veggies!
Sandwiches are not cooking! Cook! And no processed foods and puddings outside of stewed fruit.

+GrimeHubTV I hear what you're saying, though again, if planned carefully a large pot of stew goes a LONG way; even if they can only cook it a couple of times a week.
I also do hope, that if they own one, they never put the TV on so as to save that electricity.
Basic problems concerning improperly fed children is that a large number of 'Mothers either can't cook and don't know what type of foods to cook to the detriment of their kids health.
It's too easy to rely on American style trash, high fat/salt content low grade 'Take Aways, I think education has a lot to do with food diets and whilst those with low or no income appear to smoke, sport tattoos, have huge dogs, drink and even gambler, only re-education can prevent the next generation from becoming a race of fat, ignorant zombies.Birth control is also a priority, if you can't afford kids, don't have them!
"American style trash" it's amazing that you're blaming America for the bad diets people in the U. K. Are eating. It's not American style it's lazy mothers! I can tell you most people I know and see out in the area I live in,say no junk to their kids. My daughter and her husband,however eat junk. As do their kids,drives me nuts. Cooking isn't that hard. Meal planning doesn't take a college degree.

Biggest issue is life skills are no longer taught in schools. When i was young we had Home Economics classes, both girls and boys were taught how to cook healthy meals, baking, budgeting money and saving, sewing to extend the life of clothing. Young people today are no longer taught these skills neither by schools or their parents. This is why they struggle to feed their own children.
No, it’s because people don’t finish school.
My now deceased 90 year old grandmother left school at 13 went into work and cook and cleaned fir her mother its so embarrassing when people put the responsibility on others fir the simple fact we have a lazy benefit reliant society invested in nothing because they don't earn the money to pay their rent and food. People need to stop making babies they can't afford to feed.

Pathetic . My neighbour stays at home with three small children. She looks after them and her husband who works as a taxi driver at nights. They are always clean and well dressed. She cooks proper nutritious Meals. None of the children are obese, just a normal size. They don't drink, gamble or smoke just act responsibly for the children they wanted.
The problem with people is having misplaced priorities
I think the moms need to do a course on budgeting...be more resourceful...what can u get thats gna b most nutritious and filling for the money theyve got.. my weekly shopping is £30 sumtimes lesd but i know i can buy ingredients and make 3 meals out of it...also a hoarder for reduced items....so my menu works around whats on offer...its amazing how a little strategy and food cooking knowledge and imagination can save u a lot of money

I have enough money to eat and I dont eat breakfast most of the time because dont have Time because of school I have to get up at 6 am to be at school at 8 AM but I understand her point

I don't get why people say that healthy food is more expensive. It really isn't. I used to live on £30 a week and I could live really healthy. A bag of mixed veg is cheaper than a bag of chips. It is mainly due to lack of knowledge about how to cook healthy food on a budget.
Poverty is all relative. In 1920 if you were in poverty you did not have food or clothing, or even a roof over your head. In 2016 people claim to be in poverty when they live in a run down council house with no TV or Playstation, even though they are smoking with a can of beer in the other hand.

That is actually true, poverty is relative. Poverty in an industrialized country usually looks a lot different than poverty in a third world country. People in haiti wouls be wealthy to love in the houses that these "poor" families live in : running water, appliances, a solid roof. However, i think the lack of food due to the inability to afford it is probably always classified as poor (unless you are out buying sports cars instead, which probably never happens)

It's not relative, you just don't know the proper definition of 'poor'. Poor doesn't mean destitute.
The mother who says that her children had a hot meal at lunch, so she gave them sandwiches for tea. What’s wrong with making an omelette for them with a sausage or beans and fruit for dessert. I think some of these people are either lazy or don’t know how to cook.

If you can barely afford to survive maybe trying to figure out how to not be in that situation before bringing children into it is a good idea. Because if you can't whats the chance that you will be able to teach them to? I'm not for socially implied eugenics but people need to take more responsibility.
She has three children. Three and her economic situation has explicitly always been a reliance on state aid. That means she was poor when she had one child and decided to not only have another but two more. Her sons lives aren't anything but a product of her poor life decisions. She is a terrible representative for the legitimacy of this problem.

The one important fact we are never told in tv shows such as this one, is how much money is coming into the household each week. The woman with three children will be getting 196 GBP ( tax-free )in child benefit handed to her every four weeks .
I bet all the mums have smartphones, cars and TVs. An adult can live very healthily off less than 50p a meal in the UK if they can be bothered to cook, the same price as a Ribena... I blame the welfare system for this situation

@@robmontier639 Sack of potatos £1, will last at least 10 meals if not more which is 10p per meal. Tin of Aldi brand baked beans is 20p makes 2 meals. You can have Jacket potato and baked beans and you can even add a side salad for an extra 20p if you buy the big bags of salad for £1 in Aldi. The grand total for the meal would be 40p.
There are many healthy meals you can make for 50p if you buy in bulk and freeze things. It takes effort and planning but is totally doable

As I watch these programs i think of that every single day - they no longer know how to live normally and healthily, going to food banks on welfare but all have as you said cell phones, cars, flat screen tvs - don't get me started on food stamps and welfare in states - a huge scam of the many yrs I watched ppl on food stamps, i've only seen 2 that deserve it, the rest young, healthy, and in states, mainly african american - but strappingly young and healhty handing over their ebt card.
My heart goes out to these poor families, no one should be going hungry in our plentiful country. But where are the absent fathers of these sweet children? They should be facing their responsibilities

I brought up my son without child allowance in the sixties. He is a big and strong young man of 61 now.

Sorry mate i can't agree with you , most of things are expensive in Uk true especially housing but the food it's one of the cheapest in Europe ... fruit and vegetable cost double even in eastern europe... alcohol , cigarettes and fast food is very expensive tho ... but that ain't government problem if parents can't buy the right food for their children's.

First off, they could be from a food bank or given ti her, and second, some stores do not even carry name brand. Its so easy to determine everything she is doing right and wrong in a 2 minute clip apparently.

Wtf? If you donate to your community you will see that the brand of the donations depends on the people donating.... So yes, donations can and often are name brand.
I don't believe any child needs to be hungry, i would like to see what the mothers are spending the benefits on, mobile phones?, new clothes?, trainers?, cigarettes? and where are the fathers? no there is more to this

IQ tests should be mandatory for prospective parents. Innocent children should not be held accountable for the stupidity of parents who do not question the society that underpins all this suffering.
Straying dangerously into eugenics territory with that statement but I don't wholly disagree. I don't think an iq test but certainly some test of proficiency to prove you're capable of child rearing, if the prospective parents fail then they're required to attend parenting classes.

Here in California is so sad to see the school stuff throwing the food, instead of giving in it to the children after school. They said by policies of the schools we have to put it in the trash after lunch 😭😭😭 good apples, yogurts, juices, banas, cookies and milk goes straight to the trash.

I’ve met many single moms that were on benefits and never met one that wouldn’t have enough money to feed her kids. Half of them had lash extensions and fake nails, smoked and drunk and their kids were spoiled brats glued to their iPads.
If you can’t feed your children you should plan your meals and shop only for essentials and not extras like sugary drinks and sweets,cook meals from scratch, reduce what you spend on clothes and toys (buy second hand). There is lots of things you can do to reduce your expenses. And i’m not even talking about making your own clothes or growing your own veggies. You can’t expect to live comfortably on welfare, otherwise no one would even want to work. I think it should be enough to survive but not more than that. And if a single mother can afford cigarettes, beer and a trip to a nail salon she’s more than capable of feeding her own children. Or work part time when kids are in nursery (working single moms get 30! hours free childcare a week). There is really no excuse for that and it’s pathetic
Agreed. I've seen and still exist where they live on Walfare or SSI and carry MK and brands handbags or go to casinos. When I have a career I don't even own designer handbag like Louis Vuitton, go to the nail salon etc. And the kids were always hungry, open the fridge nothing in there. Not all but some single mothers.
It is time that single mothers were made to get jobs.

Porridge oats are one of the best / cheapest things you can eat.
Around £1 for a kilo.
40 gram portion will give you 25 breakfasts for £1!
Ok I make mine with water and it's bland on its own but mix some healthy fruit yogurt with it or banana (very cheap for a bunch) and you've got a very good start to your day.
my mum brought up 4 kids during 70s and 80s we got sfa from social, she had to work 5 cleaning jobs to keep us fed and clothed. Todays gen are unable to cook and survive on way more benefits than people before received
Govt needs to shake some money out of the pockets of the feckless fathers of these children if they are not on the scene (which I suspect many aren't) Even if the fathers' on benefits he's should be made to tip some up.
The government needs to do jack all and it needs to stop welfare. The UK now has some of the largest government run housing projects in the world that are just welfare traps that keep successful generation in their place of poverty.

You clearly do not understand the economics of that period or what was happening.
Labour Previous to Thatcher destroyed UK industry. They created laws which forced companies to form mergers that the Labour government wanted.
What this meant was that successful manufacturers were forced to merge with companies that were more or less bankrupted. This destroyed over 3 million jobs in the UK.
So when Thatcher took over inflation was at 25% and unemployment was at over 10% and the UK was effectively bankrupted and was living on loans from the IMF.
Thatcher saved Britain by doing some horrible things and by selling of assets. And selling of social housing was one of those things she had to do.
It is really a lesser of two evils that she selected. And you have a cheek to be selective with history in this.

I don´t understand why somebody feeds their child with a cake (mostly bought and full of non-natural additives, not home-made that would be much cheaper and healthier) and with ice-cream that is expensive. And then they complain they don´t have enough money for food. A lot of poverty-striken households would be much better fed if only they didn´t buy ready-to-eat meals. If they bought some fresh veggies, like carrots, parsley, celery etc. and made a good home-made soup with noodles, they would have a big pot of it. But they rather go and buy a box of expensive non-healthy food, because they are too lazy to cook a proper meal.
A lot of people don't want to learn how to cook. If they learnt they would be better off as you state. Soups and stews are the best with wholemeal bread.

We were raised on lentils and macaroni, potatoes, soups and stews. Peanut butter and jelly for lunch. Farina or oatmeal for breakfast. We never got sugary drinks. Dessert, what was that? My mother raised 5 children in Brooklyn during the 50’s and 60’s on a bricklayer salary and as such he wasn’t working during harsh weather, and we were never hungry. It takes effort. I really feel for these children, but the parents need to realize that good wholesome food doesn’t come from a box and isn’t advertised on television. I have yet to see a commercial about carrots or broccoli. And in closing please don’t say things were cheaper then. Look at the pay scale.

Exactly! The child benefit is for the child its either £20 a week or paid monthly at £80 odds (for 1st child less for other children) that money can pay for healthy food weekly for the actual child and occasionally clothing

What would be useful seeing as the government won't be doing much about the root of the issue anytime soon ... is running workshops showing parents how to cook nutritious meals on very very low budgets. Because its possible. Just takes more effort and balancing
Why is it the governments responsibility?
When I was first married I was a press operator bringing home about £15 per week, like 90% of women my wife made our meals, she didn’t pop down the shops to buy ready made meals, there weren’t any, she made her own pastry for pies and tarts, sausage rolls etc, a small joint for Sunday which gave us mince (via a table top mincer) for Monday’s shepherds pie or mince and dumplings, she made custard and jellies and yoghurt too, non of which could be bought ready-made, we ate well and the food was not full of preservatives.
We had bacon that was not injected with water and could buy only four rashers if we wanted from the local butcher. The only take-away was the local Fish and Chip shop. Two weeks ago my wife went back in time and used only fresh ingredience, it took her longer but not much and the food was delicious and nutritious but cost less than half of our normal food shop, it goes to show how times have changed.
Women used to have husbands so congratulations to the two of you.
I agree 100% and have been trying to live that way for years - 100% difference in the way you feel and live - as you said problems today are b/c ppl have been raised on this weird abnormal way of living.

A big bag of rice, pasta, beans and lentils, big bag of frozen veggies, big bag of oats, few loaves of wholegrain bread, bag of apples, bananas and oranges, big carton of milk and eggs, frozen fish, and they can feed an entire family for a fortnight for 25-30 quid.

The father of these children should be helping these single mums poor kids it's so easy to make just a tortilla with just potatoes onions and eggs much cheaper than chicken nuggets and better nutrition and very filling with a few carrots and peas
Omg I cannot believe people saying stop having children if you can't afford to feed them ,there are many reasons people are in poverty not of their own doing job loss divorce and death these people may have had a good life at one point but their circumstance changed and are now struggling on low paid jobs or state benefits only the well off can afford to say stupid things like this !! +Ann marie My parents once went bankrupt in Hong Kong and the gov't back then didn't give benefits to anyone. Our family of 5 were living in a room of about 80 square feet, with bunk beds. We had to share a small bathroom and a small kitchen with a few other families in the same tiny flat. My parents only slept 3-5 hours every night because they moonlighted on numerous jobs, my mom made everything from scratch, even our clothes. We didn't have TV, no soft drinks, candies or any processed food. My parents wouldn't buy them. We were never on welfare, and we lived like that for 2 years, until my parents caught up with our finances and rented an apartment, then we bought our apartment, then we bought another apartment, and then another, and another. Money doesn't grow on trees and yes people can fall off trek, but sitting there, sleeping 8 hours every night and watching TV, while buying cakes and cookies to feed the kids, and complaining how benefits aren't enough, instead of working, is a shame, a total shame. This is the difference between many Chinese people and the British and Americans. We will not want to go on welfare as long as we can breathe and we can drag our bodies to work, we will clean toilets, wash dishes in restaurants, sell our blood or our kidneys before we go get welfare from the government and then spend more time complaining how little the government helps.

Why do people always say - stop having kids if you can't afford them, not everyone starts life on benefits.
Some are actually working or there partners, but then for various reasons like losing your job, sickness, family break-ups some single parents can't get a job because child care is to expensive or not available due to hours you would need them for, or no spaces, what happens in school hols or sickness etc. we all know employers can now be picky, so not by choice you end up having to rely on benefits.
Some people do work but because of low wages, high rents etc. still struggle.
Any one who is on benefits shouldn't have more children, or if start on Benefits they only pay for for your 1st child (unless twins etc.) that would stop these people who do continue having them then end up wanting bigger housing etc.

@@danahughes7394 even having pets doesnt have to be expensive i feed my dog bulk dog food and buy reduced meat as a treat. Pre packaged dog treats are more expensive than premium cuts of meat and probably full of garbage
My Grandparents generation (i.e. those born around the 1900s) were the last to really know how to feed themselves and manage on 10 parts of nothing by growing a lot of their own food, preserving foodstuffs, proper cooking (bless all those Grandmas) mend and make do and get themselves through two world wars and rationing. Share your resources. Folk need to find these skills again and maybe Councils could resurrect the old allotments or form community gardens.

So instead of looking for work, she complains she has to wait until April for a small benefits raise? So some of the UK benefits recipients are no different than some of the SNAP and welfare recipients here in the USA.
please dont get me wrong im not sticking up for the majority of the lazy money grabbers of this country, but as a mum of 3 children and a full time worker i know first hand how difficult things can get when working with children, you need a child minder while you work, at the time that i needed one she charged £3.50 per child, this was very cheap as she was my friend, thats £10.50 per hour, i was earning £9.75 per hour, it really wasnt worth working but ive always worked so wasnt prepared to give it up. i took on an evening job aswell to make ends meet.

I think we all (single moms) get some kind of help somewhere usually, if not some kind of state aid, we get child support (like the other parent counts? but most people do think that if a father does anything, he is helping you, and for many cases there is truth to that, but still, they are the other parent) or maybe we have extended family that is available or pitches in for birthdays or you can pop over for dinner at their place when things are tight... I know if I had a struggling family member, they would ALWAYS be welcome at my house for meals... and most of us are not all out wasting the help we get... we could always do better, like do I really need paper towels? no, but yes... do I go without paper towels to save money from time to time? yes, are paper towels priority? yes... but, it will always be a struggle and unless you are doing it all independently, people will find a reason to judge you no matter what you do...meanwhile, those who judge could probably look at what they are spending their time and money on and ask themselves, how much of this is really neccessary and how much is really contributing to moving forward in life?... even if their incomes are such that food is the least of their worries... how much are THEY blowing? Just because they can always feed themselves, we don't judge them for the amount of waste they create or should we judge them? Are they saving for retirement?

yep, I was lucky I only had boys, and their biggest "needs" were nike sneakers and expensive nike socks ($17 for one pair of socks?!) ... otherwise I was able to get away with reasonably priced pants, shorts, t shirts... Cont. most food banks have loads of cereal, there is nothing wrong with a bowl of cereal with sliced banana or strawberries on top. To get the same calorific value from 'healthy' food costs 3 times the amount that it does to get from 'unhealthy foods. My husband walked out on our son and I, we manage because my son is disabled, so we are entitled to more money. But if we weren't we would be in a very difficult position.
I don't pay rent because I own my own property, but house insurance if you are unemployed tops £20 per week, gas and electricity around £24 per week, water around £6 per week and that is before we talk about the internet connectivity that seems pretty much mandatory for kids at school these days. There would not be a lot left over once clothes and shoes are bought for children.
Most people that I know that are unemployed are dependent upon the local food bank so their choice of food is not great. And it does not matter how cheap the food is if your cooker breaks, because there will be no way to cook it anyway.

It was hard to lend money and to relay on church charity. I still feel guilty eating full plate and think maybe I need to save it for later. It feels poverty is forever friend. Because of course where there is a lack of money for food then inevitably hygiene has been restricted beforehand. My son was 16 in February and they were originally going to be paying DLA until he was 17, but then Christmas time they moved the goal posts and his DLA has come to an end and I have to apply for PIP. I am bricking it and hoping that we get past first time and don't have to appeal.
We are lucky here because the food bank is run by the local church and so they don't have the usual 'must be referred by a social worker, can only receive 3 food packages per year' type proviso that many food banks have. They realise that people are poor and that there are enough stigma with being so poor as to need a food bank without putting barriers in people's way.
Thankfully, they are still paying me income support and have not tipped me on to universal credit. The job centre that administers our rural market town is 23 miles away and a real pain to get to, so at least I have been spared that.

Today's kids are do fussy with good and I blame the parents . My boys always had decent meals . Went to school on a full stomach had lunch and a proper meal in the evening. Even now I live off £60 week for food for me and my son and we eat properly .

Ya know. The average increases on Canada's food prices go up by 2%-3% each year. In 2016 census,4.8 Million Canadians are below the poverty line. I am one of those Canadians with a child,making next to nothing per month and I *always* ensure my child has good food to eat. We have incredible communities that donate and give and no matter,no child will go hungry if a parent is serious enough about budgeting and maybe learn to trim their bills in some shape or form. There's always a way to cheat/beat the system when it comes to stretching that extra dollar. Only 3.9 Million people are considered to be living below the poverty line in the UK. The UK is the 12th most expensive country to live in out of 122 surveyed. (2016). The UK average is 0.81 the cost of living in New York.If we measure according to local purchasing power (cost of living / average wage), the UK is the 22nd most expensive out of 122.. So I'm just curious as to why with the influx of money Britain/UK does actually have and where it's going. Since children are practically famished and others are busy getting drunk on ale or spending foolishly on the dole. -_-

in Arizona, USA, we have free breakfast lunch and dinner at schools all over the place during the summer... free for kids that it... parents can eat too, but it costs... something like 3 or 4 bucks... although they may have raised prices, haven't done it in a while... but, when the kids were little, we would go several times in the summer... but, you could feed your children there ... 3 square meals and they are all over the place... I think it is actually a national program, and can only assume other states are doing very similar programs... if you are low income, it is very easy to get your kids on free breakfast and lunch programs at the public schools... you just sign a form and you are in, not like food stamp program where you have to provide all kinds of info... but, they don't have dinners during the school year

What I meant by my comment is I know a family who have 7 kids (1 is a teenager, 2 are in primary school and 3 are babies) while both parents are on the dole...both parents have never worked in their lives (my parents went to school with the mother and father)and hardworking people fund their lifestyles by paying taxes which pays their dole money and they sit on their backsides doing nothing! It's those families that p*ss me off...not people who are in poverty through no fault of their own, because they've been laid off etc....I sympathise with those families. I just hate people who have no intentions of working and moan about 'poor me'. Yes some also need to get there priorities right on how they spend money, some go on about what they feed children, (as much as I hate to say it) you can get some really cheap processed foods these days.
But the thing is some people don't know how to cook from scratch. they've never been shown.
I was shown at home and taught in school,
When I was in school we had a full afternoon or morning cooking or baking from scratch, every week you took your ingredients in, and if you forgot something the teacher always had spares just in case, I remember one year (my last) they decided the school would buy everything in bulk and you bought your ingredients from them as needed, much cheaper also weren't buying something just to use once, and you didn't have to carry it all to school.
Also costing of what we had made, how to have a varied balanced diet, and how to budget a household.
They've not done that for many years now, and at one time some schools didn't do cooking at all.
I remember my children's - now home economics were for 1hr a week and the following week they had to write about what they had done the week before.
They had to take bought ready made pasty and tin of cooked meat & veg or fruit pie filling. bought ready made pizza base and whatever topping you wanted, packet or boxed cake mix, packet of crumble mix, scone mix and 2oz of fruit if you wanted to add, etc
I can weigh, make and bake scones in 30 mins.
My youngest actually only had H/E for 1 term out of the year.
When My eldest bought home his 1st ingredients list packet crumble mix and tinned fruit pie filling (I laughed) I told him to make the crumble mix and prepare his apples (all my kids helped in the kitchen from being small) took them into school and got told off, as did 2 another kids, they were told it had to be shop bought tins/packets etc because everyone had to use the same things it's only fair, something about cooking times and everyone's tasted the same, This all worked out expensive buying it this way compare to buying cheaper ingredients if you needed to.
some of my nephews & nieces, cousins & friends kids were the same but they had to buy the items from school could't send them in, it wasn't bought like when I was in school, the money had to be in 2 days before you were due to cook and the teacher would go buy ready made pasty, packet mixes etc. and if you didn't pay on time or couldn't afford it you had to sit at the back of class or sent to other teachers with work to do.
My grandchildren now only get 1hr.

The cathedral city cheese is literally 4 or more pounds a block where as unbranded is much cheaper. Branded jelly, some sort of fizzy juice and ice cream sauce all cheaper if unbranded were picked though it could be her kids being fussy about brands if you provide no alternative they'll end up eating it
I agree with this, looked like some improvements could definitely be made. Capri suns are unnecessary, just drink tap water! If the kids won't do that there are cheaper (although not particularly healthy) alternatives such as cheap unbranded squash.

it is easy to see where people make mistakes, and people are encouraged to eat a lot of branded processed junk food that costs more and does little for health which in turn feeds poor judgement to a larger degree than many realize... but, people who work in the capri sun factories need people like this for jobs... what about them? ... you are actually very kind... frankly, no capri sun alternative, or unbranded ice cream sauce would never be on my shopping list unless there is a birthday party or something... but, we have to accept that all societies breed illogical and irresponsible behavior somehow... A huge part of this problem is that generations and generations of Britons have grown up with a sense of entitlement due to artificial prosperity bolstered by colonial loot money. What did they think was running all those welfare programs? They were culturally never taught a sense of personal responsibility or behavioral control. They have no real survival and adaptational skills. For example buying frozen veggies and cooking at home ,buying groceries on sale or in bulk is incredibly cheap but takes skill ,will and hardwork. “A country like UK?” Is what the first lady said. UK was as poverty stricken before they started looting the rest of the world. That money is now disappearing and they are settling into a default civilizational reset .Though how a country can run through 100’s of trillions of pounds of colonial loot in 60 years is beyond comprehension. If they collectively get rid of that European ego at the top,stop postulating and virtue signaling their ‘ former colonies’ and concentrate on their on country,the trickle effect will make things much better for their citizens.
