Lyrics:
Haven't seen you in quite a while
I was down the hold, just passing time.
Last time we met it was a low-lit room
We were as close together as a bride and groom.
We ate the food, we drank the wine
Everybody having a good time except you.
You were talking about the end of the world.
I took the money, I spiked your drink
You miss too much these days if you stop to think.
You led me on with those innocent eyes
And you know I love the element of surprise.
In the garden I was playing the tart
I kissed your lips and broke your heart.
You, you were acting like it was the end of the world.
In my dream, I was drowning my sorrows
But my sorrows they'd learned to swim
Surrounding me, going down on me
Spilling over the brim
Waves of regret and waves of joy.
I reached out for the one I tried to destroy.
You, you said you'd wait till the end of the world.
One of their best songs. Guitar solo is incredible.
yes genius Edge guitar tne best for the group for u2 for me
This is song is so underrated... Masterpiece!
AGREE ‼️
Well said man
By far the best on the album.
I don't think this song is underrated. Was played on every tour since the release. Was played only a few on Vertigo Tour but this was their worst tour supporting their worst album anyway. 2005-06 was such a bad era for U2. Vertigo Tour had the same production that Elevation Tour and the album had nothing original, was like an All that you can't leave behind part II.
@@lonkylaine for real
How to dismantle an atomic bomb was the last album i bought
Achtung baby was a revelation for me though. Huge part of my life
This song was played alot on the radio
i think achtung baby era was U2 at their finest and most creative period
Agreed... the videos , the color palettes ,, the mix.. ;)
A very really great album, where you can feel and touch their awareness and maturity❤
Agree -- this song was amazing!
"In my dream I was drowning my sorrows, but my sorrows, they learned to swim". Brilliant!!!
Yes great line. But I always hear it as ”drowning IN sorrows”. I know the official lyrics say “drowning my sorrows” but I just can’t hear that “my”.
English is not my 1st language so I’m not sure what the difference is between the two.
And they're so true... I can totally relate...
My sorrows are still swimming.......
"Drowning my sorrows" is an English idiom that refers to someone who is heartbroken / very upset trying to use alcohol to feel better and deaden the pain. "But my sorrows learnt to swim" is a clever twist of words by Bono that says the sorrows won't go away - and indeed get worse. Instead of downing the sorrows, the sorrows overwhelm and drown the singer. It ends in suicide - the fate of Judas Iscariot.
@@steveblunden2295 Thanks for the explanation. Just of curiosity, would it also be possible to say “drowning IN sorrows” and what would that mean then?
First time I heard this song was in 92', I was on the highway with the top down, heading to partytown. When the guitar solo came up, it sent tingling down my spine, still does to this day.
And some haters say Edge is a crap guitarist.
@@redshift8302 They'll have to wait until the end of the world...
Same for me ,when im working Alone no radio,no distraction on my head looking for a song to sing this on is my best 👑👑
Frisson. Same here!
It's the build up atmospheric sounds behind the guitar....amazing!
"In my dreams I was drowning my sorrows, but my sorrows they learned to swim", Sheer brilliance!
Achtung Baby what a great album. ❤ One of their top 3 indeed
The best album of U2, guitar and production are the top
Great to read all of these comments. Here's my little story. One sunny summer day almost 30 years ago, then a late teen, I was walking to what turned out to be a memorable Zoo TV open air concert. Walked past a bus filled to the brim with other concertgoers. Saw a girl on the bus using her lipstick to write on her arm. She wrote "In the garden, I was playing the tart". The lipstick writing was probably gone the next day, the image and the lyric will stay with me forever.
This song is a treasure of Rock and Roll. The video doesn't make much sense without the film, and the version of the song that appears on the soundtrack CD...that was magic.
Is it as good as wings of desire?
@@AhmedHussienEpic Well, in all honesty, no it's not. Hahaha. but there's something about the vibe of Until the End of World that makes it one of my favorite films. it's rambling, poetic and plays like a more art-house version of MTV. I found a 3 DVD set of the full film (it's like 5 hours long?) I really recommend it over the theatrical cut.
@@viddiot It's great to find a rocker and a huge film buff at the same time, have a great day ♥
The movie is over 4 hours long but really captivating. Lighthearted feel-good road movie with agents, criminals and cybernetics in an end-of-the-world scenario. Oh and romance too.
Oh yeah, someone has uploaded another version of this song to RUclips that contains excerpts from the film but it's made on potato quality. RIP beautiful Solveig.
The Fall '91 was the last truly great era of Rock. The breakthrough of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, RHCP, GnR, Alice, REM, NIN, the rise of all/college rock...But Achtung was the best of all the albums that year. No let down and no filler, every song hitting their mark.
Oh yeah !!
Seen the concert at the Georgia Dome. Most incredible show ever!
Probably my FAVORITE U2 song ever
Don't miss RATM @ this list
Gn'R, RHCP and R.E.M. was known long before 91
"I haven't seen you in quite a while". My thoughts exactly whenever I see a new U2 video or see them in concert.
30 years of Achtung Baby, we're still here ❤
In my humble opinion this is the best U2 song ever!! the meaning of the lyrics were so underrated!
This was my son's (may he RIP...he passed in '94) favorite group and his favorite song. I too still love it. Many people miss that it's really about Jesus and Judas.
@@sylvialawrence4431❤🙏

THIS IS actually their Best song 😢
I can't believe this masterpiece has 31 years at this moment (5/8/23). How time flies...
Edge solo at 2:00 is a masterpiece. It's not only the notes but the space between them. F. en chokes me up.
Yes, it's amazing.
Such a dark, moody song, like many songs on Achtung Baby ,but even in darkness there is beauty.
32 years of Achtung Baby, we're still here
Yes, been jamming this album since I was 8!!
'Drowning in sorrows...but sorrows learn to swim'. Maaaad deep.
I love to play this with my drums. One of the greatest and most powerful songs of U2 . Sad to think that this era is permanent over. Good memories anyway.

TIMELESS MASTERPIECE ❤ HEAVY AND RELENTLESS JUST LIKE MY BLEEDING ALL HAIL THE MAGNIFICENT U2 UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD 😷
U2’s musical performance about Judas’ betrayal of Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. This song is absolutely brilliant.
Damn
Never realised that. Amazing.
Jude is here, Jesus is Jude 🖤❤
Temazo.
🤟🤗
aren't they all?
After 30 years it just hit me this song is about Judas betraying Christ.
really? u sure?
@@nicedoppy2077 It is.
@@nicedoppy2077 Yep. Its Judas singing to Jesus basically.
Or not
@@nicedoppy2077 absolutely.
For anyone who hasn't seen it, the 1991 movie of the same name, that this song was featured in, I just saw it for the first time recently and honestly what a trip and what an experience. I'm so glad you two had the song in the movie, 21 who has a taste for trippy european-style films, this is definitely worth a watch. This song in it definitely made the movie for me
@@uniauther13 I first heard of it literally a couple months ago. Ironically the Peter Gabriel song blood of Eden led me to this movie. I bought the criterion Blu-ray DVD and I just loved it, way ahead of its time. Then the U2 song was in it and just made enjoy it more. This was the 5 hour version. I totally recommend it.
Absolutely love this track, one of my favourite U2 tracks....
Very interesting summary of Judas and Jesus. They took the Bible story and made it into one of my favourite songs
Actung baby produced 4 or 5 brilliant songs. Until the end of the world is one of U2 greatest tunes. The edges guitar 🎸 outstanding, as always.
Adore this song!!! Without this album our band wouldn’t exist
Edge's magnificent guitar solo !!
yep, definitely one of his best
I dare compare it to Gilmour's on "Time".

This is one of those songs that makes you wonder... Can it get ANY BETTER THAN THIS ?
Um.... happy Holy Wednesday to you all... thank you U2 for recording a song for every occasion. Love you so much!!
Masterpiece. One of the greatest songs in history.
True
For my money this song has held up as good as any track in their entire catalog. Even more than some of their bigger hits. Even some of said hits from this same album(e.g. Mysterious Ways).
When I think about Bono’s challenge to the band when he said “we are going away for a while to dream it all up again“ at the end of the 3+ year slog of the Joshua Tree/Lovetown tours, and its subsequent courageous exploration into uncharted waters thematically/creatively/sonically/artistically, its impossible to overstate how much of a departure Achtung Baby was from everything they’d ever done before. Looking back now it seems like a natural progression. But back then it sooooo wasn’t. They dominated the entire decade of the 80s. Yet they had the balls to go away for a couple years and come back with something that was completely different in every imaginable way. So when I think back to that time, in my view this song is the perfect representation of it. Going into the dynamic between Judas and Jesus was game changing for them. And eventually for the entirety of popular music in the 90s. That’s probably why they’re one of the only bands from the 80s who expanded their popularity in the 90s.
One of U2s most beautiful songs . It depicts the betrayal of Judas and the consequences of him doing that to Jesus.
I was aware that Achtung Baby is a fantastic album from U2. Heard this song once on a flight crossing Australia towards India and it was a mind blowing experience with the speed of the plane at nearly 1,000 kilometres an hour, 12 kilometres above the ground and into the sky, a few clouds and islands of Indonesia visible below from the window. A masterpiece number and magical experience. 🌷❤️🤙
Oh, the lyrical quality of U2. I love it, and nobody does it better.
Love this song. First heard achtung baby way back in 1993 , it blew me away. The album was all about change, reinvention, experimental as well. That was my take on it anyway. One of my favourite albums of all time.
This album helped get me through some of the toughest times in my life! The timing couldn't of been better gave me perseverance to go on..this was in 92-93. Thanks U2!
Kite is the song that helps me get through the dark days of chemotherapy treatment and helps me get back to myself ❤
"Waves of regrets and waves of joy, I reached out to the one I tried to destroy"... Pure epic lyrics.....🌻
Epic is an understatement, my friend.

About Judas.
There's just something about U2 when they're.. kinda angry 😂❤❤❤❤
Achtung Baby. Totally Masterpieces. 👁 👁
Thank you U2!: Roll on !
My first album that I got on CD after I got a discman. This song always stood out the most on the entire album for me. The chords, the lyrics, the melodies...
Same here! Listening experience upped, completely engulfed by it, this beautiful song of horror
One of my top 5 U2 songs. Achtungbaby is my favorite album.
This song really demonstrates how U2 reinvented themselves at this time. Fabulous!
The movie is a real trip. Wim Wenders is a film genius.
Win Wenders asked U2 to imagine how they’d sound in ten years time and then write a song in that style. This is the result.
Came from the master peace album acting baby love that album u2 at it best
Edge's Gibson Les Paul guitar is magnificent and the lyrics are impressive, evoking the key moment of Jesus Christ ♥️ Probably my favorite U2 song 🤟🏼✌🏼
Absolutely sure
so tragic..im feelin it!
Mine too
I hear the devilish forces in this song ripping Jesus a part. This is is out of this world. The Edge should be so much more praised.
@@melissa3099 there is no Jesus without Judas
This single is a poem
My most favorite song from the album. I love both the original studio or live "especially zoo tv tour version".
I became a fan in 1989 and they were easily half of my listening for the next year. This was the first new U2 album I got to experience at its time of greatest cultural relevance. Wasn't sure I liked it at first, but it quickly grew on me in spite of / because of the change of direction it represented. Brilliant album. This is one of the songs that helped reassure me that, yes, they were still fundamentally a rock band. Love the riff -- simple but propulsive with just a bit of oomph. 😁
achtung baby has gotta be u2 best record
Best Era of U2 hands down.
The brightness from the electric guitar, and the strong sorrow in the lyrics all blend together so well in this song. It is happy and depressing at the same time with truth. "Waves of regret and waves of joy." Immediate chills when he said, "In my dreams I was drowning my sorrows, but my sorrows, they learned to swim."
Its a play on a famous Frida Kahlo quote " I drank because I wanted to drown my sorrows, but now the damned things have learned to swim. “
The video was filmed at Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin and directed by Richie Smith. The road movie footage was actually shot by Wim Wenders, U2 had contributed the song to his film “Until the End of the World”. Wenders sent Smyth some footage and Smyth then shot a video to complement the footage. The band were all shot in Windmill Lane, and were all filmed at different times over the course of a week.
Thank for the backstory info!
Great mini-story, thank you!, for Me this song is U2, watch the movie too back in the day, 3 hours long hahaaha, and the mix is different in the Movie Soundtrack CD.
There's an over 4 hour version of the movie that's said to be a lot better (which the only one I've watched), can recommend.
@@McSlobo 4 hours 47 minutes, in fact.
This will be played at my wake..or i won’t attend.
Did you know ....this song is a hypothetical conversation between Judas Iscariot and Jesus....great song. .
I was 16 and this song colored my adolescence: golden age!
The edge guitar epic
Among the best intros ever. Love this one
Undoubtedly the best band in the world....until the end of the world 🌎
The funeral for my best friend since the 1980s later today. Music was a big part of his life, so I've been going through music from our heydays. I still don't understand the video, but either this or New Year's Day is U2's best song. God life has grown steadily more depressing since those days.
I haven't listened to this song in ages. It sounds even better than I remember. And I don't think that I even seen this video
Love love love this song
0:51 Heart-shaped Larry is the prelude to the cover of Songs of Innocence, embracing his son
😊😊
I discovered U2 in the 2000s when I was in high school and I remember hearing this song for the first time and being blown away by it, I'd never heard anything like it, and that is still true, it is such a unique sounding song. I don't think they get enough credit for that in general, so many of their songs have an originality to them that is rare in such a mainstream band. During the 90s they really exhibited that to the fullest. Achtung Baby is a true masterpiece, all the album tracks are as strong as the singles. "Until the End of the World" wasn't a single and yet is such a definitive example of their sound.
The best song of Achtung Baby. Still so modern, so mitteleuropean. A moment on the history of pop rock.
U2 you are my favorite group
This is really such an hard Irish Song......amazing!
Best song ever about Judas.
perfect ending song to Billions
GOAT song. The song that inspired me to pick up a guitar back in 1994, and one I still enjoy playing to this day. Absolute masterpiece song on an absolute masterpiece album.
What a masterpiece
Once again, I wasn't aware there was a music video for this song
I wasn’t either. Sure glad it does, tho. 😂💚
lts like everything else...It's right on time
U2 and Depeche mode. Saw U2 twice and Depeche mode once before Fletcher died. Love to see U2 again. Both amazing live performers.
So many years, so many masterpieces, so much love for this band! 'Till the end of the world!
I met someone today who talked about the end of the wold....I immediately remembered this song.
A singer brings his life to each song. Bono's voice is like Pavarotti's. A life lived, & we are lucky enough to have hear the music he creates. 🎶💯💙⚜️🎤💕🔥🎸 Remember- never to take greatness for granted.
Over 30 years later and this song still gives me chills. If my teenage self listening to Achtung Baby on CD on my stereo could've known that decades later I'd still love this album...and be listening to it on my PHONE 😮 💨
What would the music world be without U2?
Much, much better.

This album is essential listening.
Really a brilliant song from a brilliant Rock band! One of my U2 favourite songs for sure!
Still my favourite U2 tune of all time
U2’s greatest song from the greatest rock album of all time. This song sums up everything that U2 is and what makes them amazing.
In the fall of 92, I was in Vancouver starting university and playing football on scholarship. I was so excited to learn that U2 was going to play 2 dates in November at BC Place for Achtung Baby and made plans to go with my gf. The week before the tickets were going on sale, we were called into a team meeting and advised that we were booked as a team to provide security as a fundraiser for the university team alumni / scholarship fund for the same 2 dates as the U2 concerts. I was upset at having to cancel plans with my gf UNTIL I learned that yup - we were doing security for U2 both nights. Even better I managed to rig it so that when the tasks were being assigned by the venue manager - I got to be "Aisle Sweeper" rows 1-5 meaning my job was to keep the aisle clear right to front of stage...for both nights. So basically I got to have the best spot in the house and if anyone stood in front of me - it was my job to make them move back to their seats - thus allowing me to watch Bono and the lads (and yes even the belly dancer) from about 40ft away. One of my favorite concert memories.
Wasnt the belly dancer the Edge's wife or something?
Ha! That's a great story! 😄👍
Now imagine if U2 will make a farewell tour some time in the future, will they call it the "Until the end of the world tour"?
Edge is the conductor of a gigantic sound locomotive that doesn't stop.
The best song ever by U2.
