  • MFP device would reboot and hang up during the reboot. This is my effort to try the trick on the internet about baking the formatter board in an oven at 350 for 8 minutes.

Thank you. I had the same problem, no light on the display.. I could hear it turning on but nothing after that. I baked for 8 minutes on 340 degree. Worked like a charm.. great video.. make sure all connections are tight.. no error whatsoever.. great video. by the way - I did not use any trays, papers..

I tried this & it worked like a charm. It's been 4 days & going strong. Display reads, "ADF Door is Open" but it prints fine. Ordered a refurbished formatter just in case. Thanks for this helpful video!

Excellent video...thanks for taking the time to be such a help to so many of us that have this printer. I haven't used mine for about a year but intend to try this fix.

Got a printer from Craigslist. It would not boot after using it for a few minutes. Baked the board on 325F convection and it is now scanning like a charm. TOTALLY PROVEN!!! NICE HACK!!!

this was an amazing video! thanks a lot! Fortunately, i encountered no errors after the process. As mentioned, i baked it at 350 deg Fahrenheit for 8 mins! Wish we could repair other electronic devices the same way!

Hard to believe but I baked the formatter and it really works now! I had very frequent hangings or undesired sudden turn-offs on a HP M2727nfs. BIG THANKS for your advice & video mate!!! :-)

8 min in toaster oven @ 400F did the trick for my M2727nf board! BTW, I unsoldered the battery from the back, and also removed the small rectangular little piece of black plastic in the RAM socket area before toasting.

This really works! Had 2 m2727 with the same problem at the same time.
Have had atleast one replacement done before, so this is a very good and chep trick to try before sending it in for repair.

Great video. Unfortunately this didn't work for my printer as well (same model). I tried baking it twice but no success. Now it's gone for parts.

Baked once 8 minutes at 350 degrees...worked till I did Hard Reset....baked again for 5 minutes at 400 degrees...got "ADF Door is Open"...baked third time 8 minutes at 350 degrees,(swore I'd junk it if it didn't work) -- works fine now,..will wait and see if it keeps working.

A bit late but i had scanner error 5 too. It means scanner cant find home position. Cause is Scanner motor failing. you can hear it at 9:30. There partnumbers fit as replacement Q3948-60186 Q3066-60222 C6747-60005
The issue you had, is lead free solder breaking bgas i think. Baking fixes it but to prevent it from happening again the formater board needs cooling so they dont break again.

We got the same scanner error after restarting the printer. I rechecked the cables and discovered that two were not completely seated fully. Once they were all seated properly the scanner error disappeared and everything worked fine.

Thanks for the video. My printer does the same thing. It turns off after a day or two. Turn it back on and sometimes locks up, but then after another off-on cycle will usually work. I am going to inspect the board and if I can't see an error try this. Or maybe buy a replacement.
I am curious if there is a single or maybe multiple problem areas, ie solder joints A, B, C and D are the problem areas? That way you could check those first. Anyone with more expertise please comment. My thinking is that during the construction of the board if you had random solder errors/variances, which on board with say 150 solder joints, that will happen, then the errors should be random, or some that the unit would simply not work at all. Or could a visual inspection yield any info, like finding solder areas that are lacking solder or cracked? It seems like there may be too many and they are small solder joints, but I would like to see any other comments.
One reason I say this is I have seen this a few times on circuit board on cars, they have 30 solder joints, but a specific one is the one that goes bad, that is usually due to the location of the joint, ie hard to get to, that specific connection gets hot so solder can get loose over the years, etc.
Not sure if mentioned. I would suggest pre-heating over for at least 20 minutes, and maybe when finished, fully open the oven door and let cool for 15 minutes while in oven before moving. Also I think you would want the solder side facing up, so as the solder softens it would settle down onto the board an re-connect.

I didn't remove the battery and don't know anyone that did. I don't think it stays in the oven long enough to do any damage to it. It's just long enough to melt the solder.

Hi just watched you vid and you never mentioned whether you removed the battery or not if you did did you check it for voltage if not maybe your battery should be replaced.

Hi. I have the same problem with my HP M2727NF. It is 15.000 copies old that is rather young. But now after being on for a couple of hours it starts rebooting after two minutes. It seems that the problem affects ALL printers with the same formatter board. It is obviously a design problem. I would expect HP to provide a replacement of the board to all who have the same issue. That would be a real customer service.

For all the people for whom this doesn't solve the issue. You can find new formatter board on aliexpress.com. So don't throw your printer out yet, before trying to replace formatter board.

Scanner error 5 usually means the motor that moves the scanner assembly back and forward is burned out. You can buy the scanner top without the adf unit but if you can get away with buying a new machine you should. These things suck.

Scanner Error 5 - it is Stepper motor at the scanner is not spinning/not connected or lamp is not lighting... Try to open, clean lamp. it this doesn't help - unscrew stepper motor, inside scanner unit (the only motor there). try to spin it. The most common issue - this motor is stuck (short inside winding - plastic melted as result )... Replace it and everything should work...
