nice reaction cimdy. Early dylan, folksinger and you get a glimpse of how it all started. he turns a little more country soon enough and i think you might like Drifter's escape or I'll be your baby tonight from '67's john wesley harding or Tell me that it isn't true from nashville skyline album 1969. His voice gets a little makeover/development around this time. FYI, in this song you probably heard the reference to President Kennedy....meaning the world was still normal then. It's great for an old guy to hear again. thanks.

This is early 60's Dylan and his references are current events of the day: fallout shelters, politicians soliciting votes from diverse groups, Jim Crow laws, movie sex symbols, and I'm pretty sure his "folk singer'' was Joan Baez.

Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix only recently came to RUclips after holding out for years. "I Shall Be Free" 1963 The lyrics vary the name dropping, but what a list of people and characters -- President Kennedy, Brigitte Bardot, Anita Ekberg, Sophia Loren, Ernest Borgnine, Little Bo Peep! Willy Mays, Yul Brynner, Charles de Gaulle, Robert Louis Stevenson, Martin Luther King, Olatunji (Babatunde Olatunji), Mr. Clean, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton. Willie Mays was a great baseball player. He played for the San Francisco Giants from 1951 to 1972. I wonder if in the later years of the sixties Dylan ever changed the question from Willy Mays to the Vietnam War. What do you do about the Vietnam War and Martin Luther King and Olatunji? But something that pointed might break the spell of the humor.

Thanks for doing this one, Cimdy! So glad you fell in love with it! It’s one of those songs with silly witty lyrics but in true Dylan fashion, some are deep and some are reflective of the times and the terrible events of that time. At the same time, 1962-63 (when it was recorded and released) was a ‘pivot point’ in American history-the promise of a young President, the (almost) nuclear war (Cuban Missile Crisis), the glamour of celebrities back then, the promise of REAL change, MLK’s ‘I Have a Dream’ speech, and of course, President Kennedy’s assassination less than a year after the song was recorded and less than 6 months after it was released. All this before I was ever born, but somehow the 1960s/70s made me who I am. Saludos to you, Cimdy! 🎉😊

I had almost forgotten about this one. Thanks for digging it up. I'm sure you couldn't have understood many of the references. Nice reaction.

This wasn't exactly Bob at his best but I would say mildly amusing !! For more classical Bob I would suggest "Leopard skin pill box hat" I'm pretty sure you'd like it Cimdy!!
