County, including HIV/STI testing locations. Follow @TransInLA for resources by and for trans-identifying folx!
Just to reiterate, these are expired condoms that were collected from all across LA county, and rather than throwing them away, we wanted to make an art project to raise awareness in honor of world aids day, and deliver resources to the Los Angeles community!

These days, there are treatments that allow HIV positive people to live a healthy life and increase their life expectancy and I always feel for the many beautiful people that we lost in the the early decades of the AIDS epidemic. I feel for all of the stigma and pain they had to go thru 💔

@@AnaDiaz-wz4cf One of these friends insisted on safe sex and he slept once with unprotected with a woman and got hiv. It sucked. I watched first hand the entire process and never want to see that again. Here 30 years later it still brings tears to my eyes remembering the pain he went through.

Diseases like syphilis are becoming resistant to treatment? That's so awful! I'm not sexually active, but it's so unfortunate that other people could be at risk. Condoms are definitely essential at least for those who have the hardware for it, haha. It's definitely the cheapest, most effective and most accessible contraception out there

When my brother died in Hawaii and we were cleaning out his apartment; we would find sealed condoms in the weirdest places. He was always prepared or just forgetful. When we moved his dresser from the wall we found open boxes that apparently were flung at the dresser but hit the wall and slid behind the dresser. At that point, I suggest we make him a floweral lay for his neck made just with all the colorful packages of condoms. My sibling laughed.....my mother, not so much.😊 I know he would have laughed his ass off at the idea! Your gown is spectacular and gorgeous!!!

Truly breathtaking! I would never guess what this was made with! So incredibly creative and the meaning behind this gown makes the whole piece amazingly powerful. Love love love it! - truly never thought I would say that about a condom dress! You are so talented
This actually isn't new! MY AUNT IS LADY LATEX!!! She was an AIDs educator in Texas that would go to bars and events to educate about HIV and safe intimacy. She had her own latex condom dress and a condom hat which is where she got the nickname from.
She's an amazing woman and I'm so so so happy to see something like her work represented.
Edit: She was doing this back during the height of the AIDs epidemic. (Starting just before the 80s and going through to the 90s!) She actually got to work closely with Dr.Fauci during the crisis. On top of ALL of that she also worked crisis call centers which were inundated with people with AIDs at the time because of the extreme shame and stigma associated with getting sick. She's saved hundreds of lives through her work and I cannot talk about her enough. She's everything I hope to be some day.

This is probably my favorite dress! I absolutely LOVE why you did it!! My dad contracted HIV from unprotected sex with an IV drug user probably in the early 90s. Didn’t find out until 1998. He passed in 2019 but thanks to the advance in medication, he was undetectable. I would rather people use condoms than rely on medications.

@Framokamc of course, but maybe some of these people never had to use them, and that's why they didn't know until now. Also, it's better to have that kind of thing reminded since people tend to forget or, like you said, don't read the instruction like they should. Also, sex education is not doing a good job at teaching young people about these things. At least it isn't, where I'm from.
