    The insta looks better at first glance. better white balance, less noise. That comes at a cost though. The insta is super soft. the gopro is a lot more sharp and has much better detail. color correcting is pretty simple and denoising isn't that bad on your computer unless you are on a laptop from early 2010s. I would like to see a comparison of both being shot in RAW and color graded in post.

    It depends on what you want. We are in the field of action cameras. This is about good shots that deliver good images straight away, without having to bother with the correct settings beforehand (and possibly afterwards).

  • @wnt-bnr
    @wnt-bnr 4 месяца назад +5

    Thanks for the review! I wonder if denoising can be turned off on the Ace Pro. I think it overdoes it and the image loses fine details and looks rather soft, even more apparent during night dive shots.

    I've only owned DSLRs and SLRs in my life, but finally feel the need to get a an action cam for the portability, ruggedness and underwater capabilities. After watching what feels like 100 videos at this point comparing the main three big hitters of action cams - the GoPro wins every shootout in terms of image quality. Almost everything else seems to be better on the Insta360 and DJI action cams, but damn - it's undeniable at this point. Look at the surface waves, the bubbles, the coral in the night shots, hell - anything in the distance! The footage from the Hero has more definition without looking too artificially over-sharp - whereas the Ace Pro is mushier and digital looking.
    Color is editable, loss of detail isn't. Now if only the GoPro's didn't overheat, the touchscreen was better, the battery lasted longer, etc. I think as always, I will fall in the dumb camp which will put up with all the shortcomings to get the best image. I fully agree though that many people don't care about any of the things I've said, if it means a camera won't work some of the time and there will be more editing in post.

    • @CircleHScuba

      I think a lot of people also don’t want to edit footage from vacations, they just wanna capture memories. So it’s a bit use case specific as well.

    • @dillpring
      @dillpring 9 дней назад +1

      @@CircleHScuba Of course, and for the record - it's not like we expect any of these action cams to put out high-end DSLR, mirrorless or cinema camera level quality footage. There are midgrade lenses that cost more than the Ace Pro, Hero, and Action put together! They all excel at being inexpensive, rugged tiny cameras for fun - and it's great that GoPro has serious competition to push the tech of all the brands. I'm excited to see how far they'll all go in the coming years.

    It would be really great to make a comparison to DJI action 4. DJI Action 4 is a really great underwater camera with an 18 m diving limit without a case and a dedicated white balance sensor. I went for the Insta360 for myself as a more versatile camera but who is the top camera for diving must be decided between DJI Action 4 and Insta360 Ace Pro. Gopro with a smaller sensor is a no-go for diving when each light beam (especially the red one) matters.

    • @CircleHScuba

      I don’t currently own an osmo action 4, but I’ve seen some comparisons and the night footage still seems to be slightly better on the Ace Pro.
      We’ll have to see what happens longer term and more and more people review them all!

      @@CircleHScuba Agree. Night footage indeed looks better on Ista360 plus the stabilization during night is also better on Ace Pro. But white balance and colors underwater is a different competition. But thanks to you a see that Ace pro is actually better than GoPro for scuba diving

  • @nes.torfernandez

    I understand that there are two types of people using an action camera: those who don't know how or aren't looking to color grade their footage, and those who will take advantage of a logarithmic profile, staying away from any auto settings, AI ship, or Rec709 colors baked into the footage. I fall into the second category, and I believe a camera that can offer the most RAW available footage shall win, unless whoever is filming simply doesn't care about doing anything to their footage.
    Underwater filming can be tricky, and the only way you can maximize the final product is by having control over your settings and color grading in post! That being said, no latest camera or AI ship will be better than any of the most recent action cameras after a solid color grade.

    • @CircleHScuba
      @CircleHScuba  5 месяцев назад

      I totally hear you and this is 10000000% my point in comparing them as well. I tried to make it clear in the. video but you said it way better, kudos for that, haha. My idea here is "okay I wanna film underwater while diving, let me grab an action cam because they're grab and go, point and shoot"
      I think once someone gets more into it, they look at setting manual settings, lighting, a tray to hold it all, floats, and then start looking at something like a TG6 as an upgrade, and then start looking at DSLR/Mirrorless and housings and cry as they buy a huge rig.....then they eventually get sad that the learning curve of full manual has "ruined" their footage so many times, they look at friends using something like a DiveVolk or Sealife housing for their iPhone and think "wow, the iPhone is getting better footage than my $10k+ rig" and eventually fold and stop lugging the big heavy camera rig and go back to a cell phone or action cam on auto, haha.
      For those of us that get more into it, yes, 100% full raw and manual with time taken to color grade and correct is going to beat an AI (for now, heck we'll see what happens with the pace that AI is improving).
      Thanks for understanding the perspective, and also sharing yours! I think it's really important to see the two sides of it!

    Since I mainly shoot photos, did you take some and compared them?

    • @CircleHScuba
      @CircleHScuba  7 месяцев назад

      I didn’t take many photos as I don’t normally in general. The ones I did take use the same kind of color correcting AI though so it was similar results imo. The Ace Pro lens is great and the megapixels are higher by a long shot (48 versus Hero 12 having 27 iirc), but I’m also not sure megapixels are THAT important for photos unless you’re printing when you get that high. I’m not super into the photo side so it’s hard 😅

      For this I left everything on factory default settings.
      I’ve been playing with stuff on my end right now. Last trip I did some 4K120, 4k60, and 4k30 with the active HDR.
      I usually leave most things on auto unless it’s a night dive and I have video lights, in which I set my white balance to my lights, but that depends on the diving I’m doing and what I plan to shoot.
      The rest I’m still doing more trial and error with but I don’t mind default settings mostly to be honest!

    @11:20 A very interesting comparison especially here at night time. The Insta360 Ace Pro does a better job of picking up details where there is very little light (You can actually see the divers), but the GoPro Hero 12 does a better job of showing more details in the areas that are lit up well by the torches. By comparison the details look mushy in the areas where the torches are shining for the Ace Pro

    • @CircleHScuba
      @CircleHScuba  2 месяца назад +2

      I was told by insta360 it could actually mess with the auto color correction if you did use red filters. I gave them feedback that most underwater cameras have them available and they said it’s not needed.
      I haven’t used red filters with mine.

    • @ccmzadv4879
      @ccmzadv4879 8 дней назад

      Ace says no and claims it will mess with the auto-correction, which I find suspect. It is a physics problem, the color simply does not exist and no matter how good the algorithm is, it needs to work harder to make assumptions. This is what leads to the softer output of the Ace video and clear over-sampling of other elements in the scene. You can see this clearly at 07:49, look at the detail of the water surface. Everything in the GoPro is higher fidelity.

  • @yonasngaturi8805
    @yonasngaturi8805 7 месяцев назад +2

    Wow it truly looks like i’m looking at a different scene/clip from another camera. But also is it just me or does the gopro’s image look more sharp? Still, I think the colour accuracy and exposure is enough to win me over as it saves time editing 😁
    However, I was quite impressed with Olympus/OM’s TG series - I rented the TG-5 on my last dive trip and really liked what it produced especially with macro. Another spanner in the works and contender for underwater camera, especially it’s another world with point & shoots and it’s best to pair with trays, lights for video and better quality. Though I’d say that the compactness and lightweight nature is more of what i’m looking for just to capture memories underwater, macro might just be a nice to have 😅
    Have you encountered other divers facing this dilemma and what were their thought process in deciding?

    • @CircleHScuba
      @CircleHScuba  7 месяцев назад +1

      Great questions, points, etc haha.
      So first of all, others have said the GoPro footage may be sharper, and I’m not sure if that’s just a matter of difference in default settings or something specific with the hardware.
      As for point and shoots, the TG series does seem great for entry level pricing! I’ve seen the TG6 do some good work for sure, but it’s a different category of camera as well with manual controls and all of that versus a more simplified process with action cameras. When you add lights and a tray to either an action camera or a point and shoot you definitely get even better quality.
      If you’re looking to have more control over things and are comfortable with that, a manual control point and shoot can do better. It requires more work, constantly adjusting white balance, etc. But if you master it, you’ll probably get better outcomes. Some people get fed up with that level of manual control required though and put it on auto, in which I’m not sure it’s that much better than action cameras that are also on auto.

      I haven’t tried the Ricoh. Olympus TG6 is pretty good though for a camera that you can upgrade a bit over time. I wouldn’t really compare it to action cameras as they are quite different. The TG6 is something you’ll want to get to have full manual controls where you can’t use manual controls on action cameras to change settings underwater.
      A TG6 is more of a starter going into the DSLR giant rig route.

    Would be a much more fair comparison if you turned the auto correcting off on the Insta360. Obviously the color corrected, sharpened, and de-nailed footage will look better overall. The footage out of the GoPro looks far clearer and sharper and clearly has more dynamic range than the Insta360 and given a fair shake with some color correcting and grading would almost certainly look better. Turn all the gimmicks off and test it again, this isn’t a fair comparison.

      If you listened to the start, I didn’t turn anything on at all. I pulled the camera out, put it in the housing, recorded, transferred to their app and then air dropped to my Mac and threw it in the timeline.
      Same thing for GoPro.
      Idk how to prove that other than asking that you trust me, but it’s alright that you don’t. It’s the raw footage with no settings changed or manual color correcting, manual denoising, etc. literally just what the cameras give on auto on default settings out of the box.

    Thomas... great review. Were you in the Aqua Vison for all dives (day and night) and does Aqua Vision include PureVideo in the setting? Also, Insta360 claims their dive housing has a Glass lens vice a plastic lens like the other housings. Is that true and do you think it made a difference. All that said, I am definitely getting one!

    • @CircleHScuba
      @CircleHScuba  8 месяцев назад

      Hey Robb! First, thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed the review!
      AquaVision is part of the AI color correcting and yes, that was in all of the Ace Pro clips.
      PureVideo is a shooting mode that I used on the night footage. It’s a video mode but has a slightly different algorithm (from my understanding) that enhances low light environment image quality.
      The AI chip onboard the camera does denoising and color correcting as it saves to the microSD card regardless of the video mode as far as I know however, it’s just that the PureVideo mode is specifically designed for low light.
      The housing does have a glass lens and maybe it’s better than plastic, but I don’t think I ever noticed a difference because I don’t have a plastic lens to try. Like, the ace pro doesn’t fit in the GoPro housing, and vice versa, so I couldn’t try the same image in plastic vs glass. I would assume glass is slightly better, but I’m not sure how much that matters if I’m totally honest. It probably does? 😅
      Get one before the holiday promo ends! The links in the description go to their site and the promotions give you extras you won’t get on Amazon.

    Partially shame that they repeated the same mounting. It is annoying as it doesn't allow a quick remount. Maybe less so important on the diving but really great to have on other sports.

    During the daytime shooting, which camera would you say is more true to color? I have the Ace Pro, and the sky is always more blue than it really is. On sunny days, I actually prefer the color and picture quality of the Hero 12. In low light conditions is where the Ace Pro shines for me.

    • @CircleHScuba
      @CircleHScuba  8 месяцев назад +1

      I actually prefer the colors in the Ace Pro. Out of the box it can be a bit saturated sometimes, but you can change video mode settings and styles and get that dialed in if you’re not a huge fan of the defaults. Similar to the GoPro in that you can change color profiles and such, I think the colors look pretty great out of camera on the Ace Pro. Possibly better.
      If you’re going to go heavy into editing, you may want the 10 bit versus 8 bit on the GoPro Hero 12, but the difference is only something people will notice when shooting in very specific modes and then doing heavy color correcting and grading imo. The average person wouldn’t notice a difference.

    From your comparison, I think it's pretty obvious that Gopro did better at color details probably because its 10-bits depth. Ace Pro did make the scene more "visible" but also "blurred" as the cost. So I won't say Ace Pro is clearly winning here. Ace Pro is amazing, I think it's better than Gopro overall, but not here.

    • @CircleHScuba
      @CircleHScuba  6 месяцев назад +1

      I think it can depend on what you’re going for truthfully, and also remember that this is all default out the box with no post editing.
      10 bit for GoPro only really helps if you’re editing footing and color grading and correcting. Sharpness I believe is high on GoPro’s default (I’d have to double check) and isn’t on Ace Pro.
      I think my next tests personally are going to be picking my “best settings” for each and then doing another head to head, with my full tray and lights rig, etc.
      For an out of the box experience, I think people would find the Ace Pro’s visuals more appealing. For a videographer looking to edit footage and just take the raw out of the box, they may be able to save some color correcting in post and get more from defaults in the GoPro.
      Both are great, I’ve used GoPro forever, but I’m leaning more and more toward the Ace Pro lately.

      @@CircleHScuba Yeah I'm the type that edits videos and photos, so I care more about potential than convenience.
      I'm not sure what you actually saw in your night diving, but in my experience, I could barely see nothing but lights from torches just like your Gopro shows (Gopro is slightly too dark but Ace Pro is absolutely too bright). The darkness is why I love night diving because it's exciting haha. So if I use Ace Pro, I may want to edit the video to make it more close to Gopro.
      But your "default test" is surely important too. Looking forward to your further test!

    • @CircleHScuba

      For my night dives, my eyes adjust pretty quickly and I see close-ish to what the Ace Pro shows. For example in one clip there was a diver maybe 1-2m (3-6ft) in front of me. On GoPro you could MAYBE see an outline if your looking very close, on Ace Pro you can actually see someone. In real life, I could see them because my eyes adjusted to the dark.
      Regardless, I definitely hear your points and that’s why in my future testing, I want to dial in the best settings I can for each camera, then work with a tray that has my video lights, etc haha.

      More advanced features need more tweaking and editing and may or may not result in better footage based on how it was captured of course, but the skill of someone afterwards too because you can absolutely screw up a photo and video with poor color grading/correcting.
      I will be exploring the comparison more myself since I primarily only used GoPro for footage you see underwater on this channel up until I got an Ace Pro. But my use case for the best quality footage I can possibly get isn’t a normal use case.

    Are you using PureVideo mode? Awesome review and this is exactly why I bought my Ace Pro for, can't wait to get mine underwater, January 18th can't come any sooner. The color is night and day out of the camera and why it's nice NOT to have to color grade to make it "better" after. A few people were complaining about the 'flickering' in the Ace Pro during camera movement, 7:30 take a close look at the GoPro water behind, who's the one that's flickering? lol

      I used PureVideo in the night footage with default settings. Just changed to PureVideo mode but didn’t touch anything otherwise.

I needed a good action camera for my video work and for me, the choice was obvious in the bang for your buck in capabilities. I have seen some great videos out of the Ace Pro that is just simply amazing. The biggest plus is the low-light capabilities. Thanks for a really well-thought-out and conducted comparison.

    • @CircleHScuba
      @CircleHScuba  8 месяцев назад

      I haven’t tried the zoom underwater actually since you double tap the screen to do it, and I didn’t try that out of the housing yet but I don’t think the touch screen works SUPER well underwater in my last tests.
      I have tried it on land though and it’s exactly as advertised. I’ve seen other videos explain it better than I will, but it has to do with how pixels are grouped to make the 4K video feed on Ace Pro vs the Osmo Action 4 or Hero 12, and Insta360 does it better in a way that makes it lossless.

    • @anatoliidudko7029
      @anatoliidudko7029 8 месяцев назад +1

      @CircleHScuba the ability of digital zoom can help with macro filming. Am I correct?

    • @CircleHScuba
      @CircleHScuba  7 месяцев назад

      Digital zoom without quality loss yes. Digital zoom in most cameras results in quality loss, but the way insta360 does it on the Ace Pro is supposed to prevent that. Other videos I’ve seen detail the “how” of that more.
      2x zoom isn’t going to help much with macro in general though imo as you’d want more zoom and a better focal distance still.

    Imo the gopro is the big winner, the image is a lot more crispy and real, the ace pro is not sharp and to soft. Ace pro is very blue and you look like fluo stick. Check the bubbles in your hair. In darker enviroment the ace pro is more bright but not sharp or detailed at all and very digital. The darker image of the gopro is better quality, it is a lot darker, but with the correct light you will see that the image of the gopro is a lot better. For me the gorpo is the camera to go, just put a light on it and you will see it beats the ace pro by far. watch this video on big screen to see the difference

    • @CircleHScuba
      @CircleHScuba  6 месяцев назад

      I think if settings were tweaked on both (they were both on default), a tray with good lights was put on, they would be more similar and/or the ace pro would win due to the software and lens, but time will tell!
      For out of the box, someone that isn’t going to fork out more money on lights, and doesn’t want to learn how to color correct, the ace pro did better.
      Depends on the use case and personally I’m excited to do more testing as the water warms a little more and tweak settings until I figure out the best setup for each.

      @krissutherland5426 I’m saying it may be a matter of settings though. ISO alone could bring more detail (at the cost of noise if it’s too high), but they were both set to auto. Time will tell!

    I don't agree with the conclusion of the author. For me, an image from GoPro looks more accurate. The image on Insta360 is blueish, and on GoPro is greenish. Or i can record in 10bit GP and see all what i cant see in first look. Or at least something 😅. But for auto mode insta obviously better. BUT
    A resolution or video quality worst than in GP, GP some kind of true resolution no interpolated, at least so cheap like in Insta. Its a very big problem.. for me
    Besides. If your hands are full, you are climbing a rock or holding a bicycle’s handlebar. You can use voice control in GP
    Aaaaand you can change the bitrate up to 200. More than other action cams 🙂

    • @CircleHScuba
      @CircleHScuba  7 месяцев назад

      Voice control and gesture control exists on the Ace Pro just fyi.
      The 10bit part for sure is on GoPro Hero 12, not the Ace Pro, but like you said that requires extra editing to really use properly which a lot of people buying action cameras aren’t doing.
      GoPro needs to innovate more for me to want to keep using them. I’ve used them for so long and at this point they’ve just stopped innovating for many models now it seems and it’s kind of sad.
      I’m glad insta360 is providing more competition, hopefully it means the market overall will get better since there’s more competitors now.

    The so-called "AI chip" is only working when your FPS is below 60. No "AI chip" function for 8k footage too. So the best you can do is 4k 60fps if you want the "AI Chip".
    As for shooting close subject, GoPro got a better minimum focus. If you have a macro lens, it will help better and let you go very close to the subject. However, acepro still needs to keep a distance at least 8-10cm from the subject. Otherwise you will be out of focus.

    • @CircleHScuba
      @CircleHScuba  6 месяцев назад

      I think any action camera has bad focal range. Lenses can help but they’re still not the best unfortunately. It starts to push the limit of what action cameras can do and I’d start recommending another camera if people wanted to really look at macro shooting.
