I feel like if they wanted to do an entirely new Regulation this close to worlds they could’ve just added in the Hisuian Pokémon, it doesn’t widen the pool too much while also finally giving us a chance to see Hisuian Pokémon competitively without the addition of all those legendaries.
I was hoping to see the regional dex worlds. It feels like we skipped straight ahead to big dex battles with old legendaries and didn't get to see the new stuff. I am a little excited to see a new format and the chaos that comes with it... but it just seems too soon.
I think just adding the hisui mons and leaving out the legendaries would have been a happy medium but it really dosent make sense to change the format so much before worlds. I made a video right when Terrastallization was announced talking about how absolutely broken regieleki is going to be. Seeing how fast its already going to be in the format is kind of sad. Why can't we go even 1 year without Lando-T
i do think rillaboom is a very good balancing factor for the meta though- it checks ursaluna & regieleki i think some of the mons we're getting like rilla & lando-t are really good for the format and help to slow down a lot of the massive new threats
@@gephicka It may be an unpopular opinion but, I think getting rid of grassy glide on rilla was a bad decision. We have too many speedy sweepers and mons that just win in trick room now. A good priority user outside of tera normal dnite would be nice and would be balanced given the fact u could always just tera to resist grassy glide
@@ItzJhon i completely agree!! I hope we get it back at some point since it's just so nice to have an actual offensive grass type and another fake out user in the format
I've dabbled on showdown but have never been to a tournament. From a spectator POV, a big part of watching VGC is the commentators guiding you through the complexity of high level Pokémon and explaining the "if he had done x" scenario or the "he really wants x but opponent really wants y". It keeps the viewer informed of the drama and stakes of the situation. Without an established format, I question if the viewing experience will feel like the best of the best of people who know what they're doing versus a chaotic "I don't know what this Pokémon is here for, I guess we'll wait and see"
This is why Aaron Zheng is so good as a commentator, his pokemon knowledge is so exceptional he can normally guess why a pokemon is on a team based on what the pokemon itself can do and its teammates, and with open teamsheets you can see moves too so it'll be even easier for players to work out what their opponent wants to do based on the move sets chosen
While I'm still excited to play Regulation D and I certainly think it will be fun, the qualms I have with the format are about accessibility. This generation has done a pretty amazing job of making it incredibly easy to feel involved with VGC, but now they've made it almost impossible to build the team that you want unless you have HOME, Legends Arceues, Sword/Shield, as well as the expansion passes. I'm fortunate enough to have them myself, but people who are newer to the series have really been hung out to dry because of this, and I imagine (and honestly kinda hope) a decrease in turnout for Regulation D events will help Pokémon understand this wasn't a super elegant way to move forward with their multiplayer format
I skipped generation 8 due to other things coming around, and now that I'm trying to get back into pokemon again it feels legitimately just pay to win at this point. No way in hell I can actually build anything because of the source splits, and it's multiple hundreds of dollars without even mentioning the time investment to bring everything together into the same team. Very disappointed to say the least, at least I have showdown I guess...
Something worth noting is with kleavor (stone axe) and samurott-h (ceaseless edge) you have pokemon that can attack and set up stealth rock or spikes to break focus sash or sturdy in the back or to chip for harder hitting mons. Maybe they won't be strong enough to use compared to the remaining home mons coming in, but just thought that would be worth mentioning as very new tools to VGC
Maybe not Kleavor in doubles but Samurott gets encore, taunt, copycat, helping hand, scary face, and screech so it could make a good offensive support. Not sure though, I don’t play vgc lol
@@Siennarchist is water stab necessary? obv lando is present but with the prevelence of something like booster bundle, maybe something like icy wind could bring more value
i think one of the coolest parts of worlds is seeing a ton of amazing narratives converge for instance, rinya sun was one of my favorite stories to follow, seeing its crazy dominance and pervasiveness throughout the year, watching the adaptations that people made like weakness policy zard was just really cool. it's also a crazy storyline to see davide carrere beat rinya kobayashi himself with his team comp. stuff like that just gets me super hyped. stuff like wolfe's own 2016 run, which found a way to dissect a omnipresent big 6 team and address the other threats in the format with a really cool team comp, that narrative was a huge part of why that win felt special. i doubt the team would've been as cool if it was just a guy noticing that some mons are strong. i got most into vgc in 2022, and eduardo cunha's win was very cool to me because of the way his team looked and how it actually played. i hadn't watched the archetype in action before, i assume it was relatively rare, and it was intriguing to watch this bulky, pivot-centric positional offense take command of what i saw as a more offensive, fast-paced metagame. even if something 'boring' like swordfish had won worlds in 2022, i'd still appreciate the storyline of someone using swordfish and conquering people's attempts to counter it. vgc is the best to me when people have time to manifest their visions for the game, and i can follow a story line. this format just feels like it'll lack a lot of context. it'll be like skipping to the last chapter in a book we never got the chance to read. i won't say it sucks, but i want what we could've had.
I have been on the verge of going all in on VGC as a hobby and committing to attending multiple events for several months now, and have planned on doing so at the start of next year, but is stuff like this that has always pushed me away. Acessability is a big deal, and while I have the time and ability to grind my skills and attend events, I dread having to figure out getting the right mons and the right IVs. Also more importantantly this is a slap on the face to all the players that have been refining and perfecting their teams for worlds. I think this worlds is going to be sorely lacking because of that.
As someone who plays ladder but primarily enjoys competitive by watching tournaments, I’m definitely upset both as a player and a viewer. I didn’t start playing competitively until scarlet/violet so now I am essentially forced to use rental teams because I don’t have access to these new OP Pokémon. As a viewer, most of my enjoyment comes from seeing the metas develop. Watching you win a regional with a TR team and Joe win with a sun team we’re highlights of my viewing experience, and it seems now that these unique teams are completely off the table. Watching a tourney with every team consisting of genies, eleki, and a handful of other OU Pokémon seriously dampens my excitement to watch.
Completely agree with your point abt competitive. I only started playing comp in SV so I have no access to the insane pokemon that are being added. Never even got dlc for sword/shield and I don’t even have zacian cuz I have shield (don’t ask me why lol). I think I’m split on how I feel as a viewer. On one hand I agree with your point, it’s not as interesting when 80% of teams are running genies and regieleki, but I somewhat enjoy watchig high power meta games. Like 2016 might have been pretty stagnant with the megas and primals but competitively one of my favorite years cuz the power scale was gigantic. Same with 2019. So ig we’ll have to see how it plays out.
i agree with the first part, but I would wait on the second part. We don't know how this meta is going to turn out, and I could see some interesting strategies come out. But I do agree that there are going to be more centralizing mons now
Having Pokemon you can't obtain in game is just a bad move in general. Even if you have them from previous games, they might not have the right IVs, EVs etc. and you need to go through a lengthy process to change them up that may involve playing an old game. Not to mention that many of the legendaries where obtained in an online mode that leaves you with dumb NPCs now, and it's a long grind...
@@ishayugupta7378 As a spectator I’m fine with formats using non-regional/legendary mons. What I’m not a fan of is potentially ONLY getting that kind of format for worlds. In Sw/Sh series rulesets, mons floated on and off ban lists so I’m sure there’ll be some variance in future worlds. But like, we haven’t had worlds without Landorous since 2017! It’s obv not TPC’s fault that worlds 2020 & 2021 got skipped, but seriously, we couldn’t get ONE regional year coming off of 2022 to make up for lost time?
@@ishayugupta7378 shield just worked out better for me. At the time I was able to borrow sword and then rush a file to get a zacian via home. That didn't happen until pretty late and I never used it.
I've only dabbled with the vgc format a bit myself but I do watch a lot. I definitely like seeing the newer pokemon in a regional format shine before all of the legendaries get dumped in the game. I can't help but think that the skipping of the regional dex format is because of the terrifying pace that the Pokemon company is churning out new pokemon games. Specifically everything about Pokemon lately has been rushed and its hard to keep up with the pace of everything- the games themselves and trying to keep up with different meta games. You're a real soldier for keeping up with Pokemon and the vgc format on top of all the RUclips stuff you do.
The need for new formats is an entirely constructed problem though - in previous years we'd start with a format equivalent to Regulation C for the whole year. DLC essentially adding new Pokémon means that the next year gets to be the "National Dex" format of the second year and the year after is GS Cup - changing the format so often is a new problem in itself that TPCi brought on itself independently of GF's short dev cycles
14:23 that voice crack about Regieleki is actually perfect because it sounds like the pained moan I let out every-time I encounter it on anything I play, TCG, VGC any format.
ScarVi had already pretty much killed my interest in playing competitively (even just on the ladder) because of how fast the regulation changes happen vs how slow it is to grind raid dens to get tera shards... By the time I find a team I'm interested in building, the time investment it would take to actually assemble that team given the fact that I work 35-40 hours a week just isn't worth it when the rules are just gonna change again in a couple weeks. The fact that this trend is continuing to worlds like this just reaffirms my feeling that this generation just isn't for me lol.
@@dobby6473 a) that doesn't fix the actual game, and b) i have played on showdown - it's fine for testing but it's just not the same, and c) showdown isn't really relevant to the official ladder/events, which is my main point
@@kiranearitachi that's a fair point. Idk I just like having my own team and tweaking it as I go and you can't really edit a rental. Teambuilding is half the fun for me but with all the grinding and frequent rule changes I just don't have the time...
@@VirtualMarmaladei’m going to be honest. Just cheat and get the pokemon you want. Don’t make them all shiny though it’s tacky But for most people with jobs there’s no way to get the teams you want so just cheat in pokemon and use them for battling If you end up finding the right team catch them yourself to feel better idk
I’ve wanted to play VGC for a few years now. I started trying out the ladder late into Regulation A. None of my things were really competitive ready, namely the fact they had all been wild captures with random IVs. And as the regulations shifted, I kept feeling farther behind. When C rolled around and I got to experience the Ruin Pokémon, I decided to stop for now and finish getting them myself and start trying to breed things up. With Home (and the fact I don’t own SwSh DLC), I think I’ll probably have to tap out and stick to watching again. I just feel too far behind right now.
This has been my experience, even as someone who has experience with breeding. I'd spend weeks brainstorming and tweaking an original team idea, another few days putting it together, and get maybe a month of play with that team before a new regulation was sprung on everyone and I had to start over. It's not fun, and it's hard to get practice in and figure out what I need to work on with gameplay/teambuilding when I barely have enough time to playtest in game before my team is outdated. When the Ruin Pokemon got added I basically gave up, hoping that the changes would at least slow down... well, at least now all they have left to add is restricteds.
Use rental teams, once I swallowed my pride and started using rental teams the game became way more fun. I think it's really inefficient to try and learn how to play the game while also learning how to build a team. How are you supposed to know what will work and what won't if you don't understand the game? You could trial and error until you find the solution but you will probably burn out first (and it kind of souns like you already have).
@@winxwin4790 Exactly this. Building your own team implies you have a better understanding of the metagame than other team builders. As a beginner this is definitely false. Team building is a very advanced skill, even Wolfey doesn't build his teams himself, he gets inputs from other pro team builders.
As more of a casual spectator my initial reaction is bleugh... Yay! I get to watch more Regieleki again... from the previous gen... again... and oh boy! Landi-T been at least a few months since I saw him... really been missing him... bleugh... I was really looking forward to watching what players were gonna pull with the pardox and ruin mons. Like you said, when people have had a chance to live with the stuff for a while the worlds is where some players come up with really interesting teams.
all i’m thinking about is what will happen next year? we get the dlc so either that will power creep what we have rn (invalidate more pokémon) or we get a repeat of this years worlds. both options sound bad
I think it’s pretty damn bad for newer players that are at their first pokémon game. Your point on having the right IV for your goal is also a good one … I’m also just sad that the meta will be very centralized now, the most fun I’ve had in competitive pokémon was always in lower power metas. I also did not miss Regieleki and Landorus a single bit.
@@WhirlyBeepBoopslando T lost a few important moves but it's stats, typing and still decent movepool means it will have a place in the meta but it won't be as good
I was thinking about the rapid shifting of the format via Nintendo yesterday before the announcement, and having started getting into competitive in X and Y, I do really really miss having a whole season of a single format, with all the meta development and the finale of worlds being the big payoff to all the work people had put in to push the meta.
I think this cripples them for future worlds. The life cycle of this game will be long enough to where they're obligated to keep releasing dlc to make any new competitively viable pokemon enter the format. It also just feels like the last series of sword and shield repeated, where you have to struggle to fit in mons that are amazing just because the power creep is so high. I like when you build teams around mons like grassy glide rillaboom, not struggle to find a place on your team for it. We're not going to have a single worlds where there's a lot of scarlet and violet mons running around. Doesn't that seem bad for the game?
@@masterjareth The difference is that GameFreak/TPC can very easily fix this by not allowing the busted ass legendaries in VGC comp. The legendaries can be brought to SCVL but not used at events like Nationals. Simple fix.
This is the exact thing I went through when Regulation B was announced. All those niche Pokemon I wanted to use got immediately outclassed by Paradox mon teams. It really kills the game for me -- there's a reason I was never interested in Ubers
Honestly as much as I feel this, I do think reg A would’ve been a very stale meta if it had gotten more than essentially one regional. I imagine it would’ve just been dozo teams and teams that beat dozo etc etc
@@swissgoat4981 Thinking about the meta in terms of Pokemon is intuitive, but is inaccurate. Because Flutter Mane was never banned in VGC, we got to see its sets evolve dramatically throughout the months. In the beginning everyone was running speedy frail with sash, then people shifted to bulky to beat mirrors. Now we see almost no sash and mostly booster energy. The tera types were also changing, before everyone ran fairy but now there are some steel and water tera as well to adapt against Chien-Pao and Palafin. If you see the game in terms of sets instead of mons, the game becomes a lot more interesting. Singles never got to see the evolution of Flutter Mane sets because it got banned immediately, so people had no time to see the full potential of it either.
They're just talking about the content of the video, the announcement of regulation D. A lot of BonusWolfe videos have been about problematic or controversial news about the VGC format
I was really hoping there'd be a regulation D, but not like this. I was hoping that Regulation D would be the addition of Miraidon and Koraidon with a single restricted per team. It would be really cool to see the sun and E-Terrain teams that we got with that. And MAYBE allow Hisuian Pokemon. But allowing all the sub-legendaries from past gens is just a little too far and too much for a Regulation change just before Worlds. Especially since it doesn't even include the region's main legendaries. I was expecting we'd essentially get an unlock of the whole region for Worlds, not other region's legendaries.
Tera ice Regieleki is the best argument yet for the Pokémon Company to start banning specific Pokémon in vgc. That thing got banned from OU in like 10 minutes.
VGC is too different as a format to singles. doubles as a mode is an inherent balancer and makes things that would be overpowered at least manageable. we were able to deal with series 12 and have a very competitive world championship, we will be fine.
As a spectator, I think the format is exciting, but I really wish they would have had worlds in Regulation C instead. Such an interesting meta to watch and I’m genuinely sad we really won’t get to see if end at Worlds
Hisuian Goodra is a personal favorite of mine. It's defenses are pretty great, only weak to Ground and Fighting. It has access to some really interesting tech (stuff like Sap Sipper, Breaking Swipe), along with a really deep move pool. I
I'm a casual viewer, started watching in 2020. Since I came in at a point that legendaries were being introduced already and I didn't really know any better, I've found these first few rulesets in gen 9 to be waaaay better than the legendary-heavy formats we left off with in gen 8. I love seeing new mons from the region shine and have a chance to compete within a level of power they can keep up with
I don't know if it's necessarily that casual viewers don't like legendries, I feel it's more about a desire to see variety. Legendries are just more likely to be centralising so more likely to receive ire for causing a lack of said variety. I could be wrong though
As a casual viewer with a lot of casual friends, its about variety to a point, but its also the legendary status. Like, when I play Pokémon Stadium with friends, some will say "ok so no one use the Birds or the Beasts" bc part of the enjoyment comes from the immersion of seeing real Pokémon battles. And in-universe, you don't see everyone busting out their own Regieleki.
Variety in competitive pokemon comes (largely) from different sets and spreads on the best pokemon. The idea that because legendary pokemon are used, variety is dead, is just... categorically untrue. Being able to use a bad mon isn't an indication of variety, it's just an indication of the format's power level, but regardless of power level each format will have its dominant picks that will centralise the metagame around them. Smogon singles lower tiers is a good example of how even when you use bad pokemon, a couple are inevitably going to stand out and discourage worse pokemon from being used. Ironically enough it's often the bad pokemon that have the *least* variety in their sets because they typically fill only one niche and can never really successfully do anything outside of that, see Murkrow as an example.
@@lvli044 Big agree. As an outsider to the competive scene there's something about seeing a bunch of Landorus and Cresselia which is groan inducing in a way which everyone having an Incineroar and Rillaboom just isn't. Objectively I know it's the same either way, yet somehow the former just *feels* so much worse.
If anyone is into competitive battle royales, this is like a completely unpredictable circle which is pretty cool for the spectators cuz u really have no clue whats about to go down. But the pros who put all their time into practicing are forced to guess and that can be really frustrating for them. In my opinion
I personal enjoy watching/playing formats with a lower power level, because I feel there is more variety in team composition. With the addition of Home, the best mons from the past are going to do what they’ve always done for generations (Lando-T, Cres, etc.) and the meta is going to form around them. I like the idea of adding more Pokemon to the format via Home (more variety), but some of these legendaries have overstayed their welcome in the competitive scene imo.
I'm very surprised they did it this early... It really makes me wonder what they have planned for the rest of the year after the DLC hits I know we get a bunch more Pokemon added after but man...they must have like a big shake-up happening with something with the meta because that's just so crazy to go all the in it already with the home release For singles were eating good it's kind of crazy right now but for VGC it's going to be quite interesting to see how this plays out
My thoughts on the new format: WHO AUTHORISED THIS? WHY ARE THEY NOT IN TROUBLE? I know that this isn't the worst they could do but I was really excited for worlds in regulation c.
There is zero negative to the monetary gain by doing this. All you've done is open the playing field to more Pokémon thus raising the level of strategic thinking. Whether it happened for Worlds or after it would have happened regardless. Doing it sooner allows them to push the use of Home in addition to Go and other games. Nobody would ever get in trouble for this decision.
@@BrandonWatsonBrown Ah yes, everyone knows that more pokemon being legal means more pokemon being viable. Wait, what's that? Lando-t being by far the best intimidate mon? Regieleki making most fast mons really hard to justify? No,i must be hearing things. People are complaining that the 1st worlds used to be a regional dex worlds, not that eventually home legality would come. Like with everything related to scarlet/violet,more money, worse actual content (unless you really love seeing the broken mistakes that vgc doesn't ban being spammed, that is)
It really took me out of comp Sw/Sh early when the paradox pokemon became legal after not being legal initially. Change is hard, and chasing a moving target makes it hard to experience a metagame, especially with the investment of having to get the mons
Yes, you could get regular Wooper in the game, from one if the teachers, after you finish all of their classes. But you just haven't been able to use it in competitive just like all other non Paldean Regional variants.
Thanks for this video Wolfe. I’ve been out of the loop for a few months bc I got bored of the format but I was excited when the Home update came out. Quickly dashed when they released the reg D rules lol. I just wish the Hisui mons could have their time in the spotlight because they’ve never been part of a VGC-legal game before. Like you highlighted, lots of them have great potential in a non-legendary format that is probably not there when legendaries do exist. Personally I love the genies, excited for Cress, etc. but I wanted them to bring them in more slowly. Didn’t realise how close we are to Worlds either. That’s so little time to get used to a drastically different format. It will be fun to watch as a spectator but I don’t envy you guys prepping for it.
I personally thought they jumped the gun way too quickly by allowing more than like, 1 paradox mon at a time in regulation B because they are just so much stronger than your average mons, only to then also add the Ruins in so quickly as well. I had a lot of fun in Regulation A where I managed to get to rank 552 on the ladder using non-meta, self-built teams and I wanted to get back into VGC. This has done nothing but kill any and all will I had to play. I started playing VGC lightly at the end of SwSh and I quickly grew an absolute seething hatred for Landorus-T, and judging by the speed we're flying through these regulations we'll also end up with the twin devilspawn that are Groudon/Kyogre soon enough and it'll continue to reduce the amount of actually viable mons to bring. We barely even had enough time in Regulation A to explore more complex compositions because everyone was running Mouseape/Gholdengo/Tatsudozo teams and in hind sight, there were far more ways we could have played against those compositions but they added the Paradox mons so quickly that there was no time to experiment. Early pokemon metas are the most fun because it rewards creativity a lot of the time. I dunno, maybe I'm one of the casual people who enjoys low power levels and everyone else just wants it to be like the end of SwSh where you just have legendaries bump heads like action figures with a fraction of thought put in because you can just brute force shit instead of having elaborate plans.
I've slowly been getting into competitive and this is insane, the home update certainly didn't help with all of this, I think it would've been best to have this announcement way back when the competitive season started cause this mixes things up a hell of a lot
One niche I could foresee wyrdeer having is the fact it’s not only a trick room setter, it also has intimidate and has decent natural bulk. Nothing meta defining but paired with the right things it could be incredible
I would have really liked to see them just exclude the legendaries added by HOME, this would have still given a huge shake up but without things like Eleki and Landorus I don’t think it would have been so centralizing and could have been more of an update to the format instead of throwing it out the window
I like the fact that the hisuian Pokemon are finally being introduced (I've been really enjoying using them in showdown) but I definitely think that adding all of these game breaking legendaries this close to Worlds feels like a bit of a slap in the face. I definitely agree on the accessibility factor you mentioned. As a casual player myself, I find grinding competitive Pokemon daunting enough, but knowing that I'd need to go to so much effort to get the best mons in the meta feels really demoralising.
I think this will definitely make for an interesting World’s as we see older mons interact with the mons we’re used to in the format, but I still think it’s definitely a weird move to do so so suddenly and with such meta-defining picks. I think it would’ve been more interesting to only include Legends Arceus mons rather than a handful of some of the most broken Pokémon in previous formats. Either way, I’m still very excited to watch top level competitive Pokémon :)
I hate how quickly they've been power creeping the formats. We got two whole months to explore the low powered regional format before the paradox mons came to wreck house, and now this?
Greninja gets Battle Bond which boosts it's speed and sp. atk. at once, so I wouldn't say it sucks. It's pretty capable with Grimmsnarl actually. Also, Super Fang + Fake Out + Drain Punch + Wood Hammer/Leech Seed Chesnaught with Tera is pretty good too IMO.
as a spectator I am excited to see what sort of strategies people will come up with, I realize playing a volatile meta is not fun but I think from a viewing experience it is more interesting and fun to see a variety of strategies represented.
You can get normal Wooper for trade in the middle of Cascaraffa near the fountain. It’s a Paldean Wooper trade. Confused why multiple sources are saying Quagsire is a new mon.
Honestly I am always way more interested in the regional dex formats because they always feel more unique to me as a spectator. Each mon has fewer past OP threats to measure up against which can lead to seeing totally different matchups as compared to a bunch of familiar faces every time. There’s already a lot of balance issues in SV, I don’t think dumping all these new Pokémon on the format now was the right choice
I feel like with bringing back pokemon like the genies and cresselia they're just making it the same format as every other generation with very minor changes. I really wish they had just brought in the hisuian mons and maybe some non legendaries. Cresselia, genies etc. makes it feel like sword and shield over again.
It is totally valid to be upset about such a major change being put in place right before the World Championships, considering how much prep happens for these competitions and this one being the ultimate event for the entire game. From the perspective of a casual player, I actually had been waiting for an update like this to try and dig in and play more. Maybe not the most popular opinion, but the inclusion of Ursaluna is actually motivating me to build a team around it because I like the Pokemon so much, with my goal being to join competitions starting after this World Championships. Yes I'll be behind in terms of power since I've been mainly a casual player until now, but now I get to compete using one of my favorite Pokemon, which is way more motivating than I had felt at any point previously while watching VGC competitions.
Having recently coming to VGC viewership, I watched the last championship season and feel that although Reg C looked to be fairly polarised towards a few limited mon. Yes, there were more teams than that but mostly they bubbled around top 4-8 and the top 2 were moderately static. The last few regional events I think there was starting to be a bit of a breakout to more innovative team compositions. I think dropping the mon included in Reg D onto the meta will a) make for extremely different teams than what we have seen all year ('Yay!' variety) and b) make a lot of the teams look like they're from 2022, which excites me far less.
I usually just watch the final match up at worlds, but now I’ll be watching most of the event! It’s a cool shake up and I want to see what the worlds best players come up with with all the new (old) tools.
I haven’t been into competitive Pokémon since ORAS, but finally took the dive back into SV a few weeks ago after watching Wolfey’s videos of him using a Flamigo to destroy standard VGC teams a few months back. I’ve had a lot of fun and was considering going to a regional just for the fun of it, which I’ve never done before. TBH legendaries kinda ruin the experience for me(which is why I didn’t want to play in SS era), and I was hoping for the Meta to stay where it was because when legendaries aren’t involved, people rely more on goofy, wild strategy that is fun to see and makes the competitive scene enjoyable and innovative rather than broken legendary drab. I was running a team with a trick room Oranguru because I wanted to use a favorite Pokémon and make it work in VGC, which was completely doable. IMO the new rules will slaughter the fun of VGC because it’ll just be the same robotic legendary team vs another, and will dissuade newcomers or casual competitors like me from getting into VGC community. I don’t know if people agree with me but that’s my take.
I fully agree, stopped myself with VGC in S/V the moment the ruinous mons got allowed. Same with S/S the moment the legendary horses were introduced. I was excited to use some strats with hisuain mons but I'll skip that since the well known sub legendaries will just dominate the meta all over the place. Still fun to create your own team with mons that players with rental teams never heard of but this wears of quickly if you have to play against the same teams over and over again. That's just a major letdown for me in VGC while the pokedex is so rich with all sort of mons to explore.
Wolfe, we understand you are really busy with your main channel and keeping the edge in competitive Pokemon, well at least I do, and I am pretty sure we all have the capacity to wait for new content. I am just really glad this channel exists for us OGs who still wants old Wolfey content, and even more glad that this is something you want and like doing. Take time to rest if you need it :)
Its fun seeing this video after the ladder went live on Showdown. You skipped over Typhlosion but with Fire tera next to Chi Yu their Eruption hits stupid hard. Even better with Flash Fire with Chi using Lava Plume. Lunar blessing is nuts too, even though you said it doesn't seem good. Overall great video with lots of helpful insights though.
17:05 I would say this is the only take here I disagree with, for 1 reason only- dire claw this might be the most broken move ever. 80 power 100% accurate With a 50!! percent chance to sleep, para, or poison All on a mon with 120 base speed. Its not gonna be an offensive threat but as a support mon dire claw immediately gives it a niche.
I am so sick of seeing legendaries. They limit team building so much because you either need to run them or you need to run their counters, which in most cases is another legendary.
as a ex-competitive player i am interested but apprehensive to how this is going to go. I always watch worlds anyway and usually some big tourneys throughout the year so it doesn't change much for me, but it's always sad to see the competitors unhappy with a change
Really want to hear your thoughts on sneasler after you see dire claw. The move is so stupid and would love to know if you think the dumb luck element would bring people away from (or in to) using it
Great video, I agree with the short time frame and other factors it will feel different. I don’t know how relevant you think it will be, but Sneasler signature move is Dire Claw, which had 50% chance to poison, sleep or paralyze. Combined with scarf or band that might be good, but probably not in the face of lando t or urshifu
I really hope enamorus turns out to be useless, because the rest of the pokemon have some other way of obtaining them, I've looked into enamorus, you need to replay the entire game to soft reset for ivs, so getting a low attack one is going to suck, or god forbid you need 0 speed as well because you're running the slow form.
You just save before you catch it, and reset if the IVs aren't what you want...And having low attack isn't actually that relevent, despite what Smogon like to think.
I think it’s a bad thing to change the format so drastically for worlds. That being said I’m excited for the format itself cause it looks fun to use all these new broken mons
Hello Wolfey, nice video which made me think of two things. - What I really dislike in the VGC formats (as a spectator) is the presence of 2-3 mons on every single teams. Right now it’s Chi-Yu / Ting-Lu + Flutter Mane, we’ll be back to Landorud T + Regieleki on most team. I don’t know if there’s ever been a format like the first one for S/V where teams had a lot of variety. - Maybe it’s an opportunity for a content creator / a group of content creator / a group of competitors to host an intermediary league in order for the format to develop before worlds? Looking forward to seeing you win the championship regardless.
I think this would have been a really cool format if it weren’t for the inclusion of the legendaries, I think a lot of people would have been hyped to see just where the legends arceus mons end up after being locked up in non battle focused game
@@GravityIsFalling I mean the legendaries allowed in this formats are absolutely disgusting, I can actually sees people supporting on this take on format like vgc. Ursaluna's still pain in the ass but 1 broken shit is less than 4-5.
@@GravityIsFalling In singles Legendary clause is stupid due to bans and tiers existing. But in doubles i genuinly believe it should be done, a lot of legends like the genies, regielecki, flutter mane, etc are just too centralizing
I miss that intro lmaoo also agreed, I wish it wasn’t all those OP legendary Mons when it really could’ve been as simple as the Hisuian and the Alolan Mons. Now we are just watching past metas in the 1st year of terastallization and scarlet and violet not letting any of these new Mons get some showtime. I always play games that company’s/devs have no idea what the hell they are doing lmao
You raised a good point about some arceus mons being a pain to get. Leaks suggest no but there could be a couple spots where Enamorous could show in PoGo maybe
I was gonna go to my first ever Regionals last month but didn't wanna try to do good at a format that doesn't last. This change dashes any hope of ever wanting to catch up.
It wouldve been cool to see the Hisuian Pokemon get introduced in this since they never had a time to shine in competitive, and the time travely nature of the region fits with them. Since they announced the restricted Dex back in Sw/Sh, it seemed like shaking things up was the idea they were going with but now twice they have just thrown in all the old broken legendaries at the end.
I think for a viewer, this format should be fun/exciting. I primarily play MTG, and most of the famous tournaments from history are the ones where someone showed up with something completely off the wall/broken for a relatively unexplored format.
As a pure spectator (I just don't have the memory necessary to play) I have to say I'm pretty disappointed with this decision. I don't feel like the Paldean pokemon got enough time to shine, and now most of them are going to be cast aside in favour of older, more relible mons. I am curious which ones are strong enough to stick around, though. And at least terrastelisation is going to make sure that even with old pokemon, the game is still going to feel relatively new and exciting. To watch, at least.
You've been doing great man! Your content has reached another level and you can clearly tell the amount of time and effort you've been bringing every day! Glad you could relax even though it's to talk about controversy LOLOL! Keep it up!
Ayo Wolfe. I saw you at regionals and got the pick. Thanks for being dope to your fans and I’m excited to see you cook. I’m with you on the format and I know you’ll chef something up 🏆🔥💯
I think it’ll be closer to early scarlet violet with the variety, and some different picks like counters will shine. I think Trick room/fighting/ ice types will define the meta. Time will tell!
I feel kinda bummed that the legends arceus pokemon won't really get their time to shine. I was really hoping for a fakeout immune hisuian typhlosion using eruption strategy, which MAYBE can still work, but it just feels powercrept before it's even in the game. Same with sneasler who I like a lot and I was looking forward to being able to play them in online doubles every since I first caught them in PLA. Anyway, that aside, I feel like for a spectator, a last second shake up is probably exciting. We might see a lot of bizarre strategies at worlds because there hasn't been time for a meta to form. Although in current day and age when there will be tons of people doing it outside of tournament, there very well could still be a meta by the time worlds gets here and it might be boring. I can imagine competing in that environment could be very frustrating especially if some new strategy emerges at the last second that just beats your team and you felt like you had no real way of preparing for it.
Sneasler was literally never going to see play. It's defences are too horrifically bad for it to see any play. Singles, sure, it's fine. Not in doubles.
As a spectator, I just think that using the regional dex of the new region for worlds is just a cool way to see unique Pokémon and team compositions. I don’t really mind the repetition of a lot of the same strong Pokémon in these less restrictive formats, but it gives less room for people to come up with a unique strategy that uses a lesser used Pokémon. I really don’t have a problem with the limited amount of time before worlds as I think it does enable an interesting skill set (almost like playing pre release sealed in mtg vs playing standard). But I’m not a player, and I can see how it would be frustrating for the preparation and work you have done to all be wasted. Honestly, it might be cooler if they just ran both formats over the course of a few more days, kind of like how some chess tournaments run both blitz and rapid, or rapid and classical, etc. But both Nintendo and the Pokémon company are probably too out of touch to actually do anything that would appease their fans.
The worst part about Eleki having Electroweb is that he's the only one who gets it on level up now. It's effectively his signature move.

I kinda like guessing, keeps my brain running, but I see where you’re coming from
Most of the commentators don't really know what they are talking about tho lol.
Not sure though, I don’t play vgc lol

i think one of the coolest parts of worlds is seeing a ton of amazing narratives converge
for instance, rinya sun was one of my favorite stories to follow, seeing its crazy dominance and pervasiveness throughout the year, watching the adaptations that people made like weakness policy zard was just really cool. it's also a crazy storyline to see davide carrere beat rinya kobayashi himself with his team comp. stuff like that just gets me super hyped.
stuff like wolfe's own 2016 run, which found a way to dissect a omnipresent big 6 team and address the other threats in the format with a really cool team comp, that narrative was a huge part of why that win felt special. i doubt the team would've been as cool if it was just a guy noticing that some mons are strong.
i got most into vgc in 2022, and eduardo cunha's win was very cool to me because of the way his team looked and how it actually played. i hadn't watched the archetype in action before, i assume it was relatively rare, and it was intriguing to watch this bulky, pivot-centric positional offense take command of what i saw as a more offensive, fast-paced metagame.
even if something 'boring' like swordfish had won worlds in 2022, i'd still appreciate the storyline of someone using swordfish and conquering people's attempts to counter it.
vgc is the best to me when people have time to manifest their visions for the game, and i can follow a story line. this format just feels like it'll lack a lot of context. it'll be like skipping to the last chapter in a book we never got the chance to read. i won't say it sucks, but i want what we could've had.
I couldn't agree more with this comment. Thank you for putting it into words so eloquently!

Just play on pokemon showdown?

I've been getting into pro pokemon a lot for the first time in awhile but seeing Landorus is probably a gg for me, that sh*t is so boring to watch.
They did remove a lot of moves from its pool, but I don't have the knowledge to determine whether that's enough...

Most generations Ubers _does_ have niche Pokémon. They’re just _also_ busted.
@@swissgoat4981 Thinking about the meta in terms of Pokemon is intuitive, but is inaccurate. Because Flutter Mane was never banned in VGC, we got to see its sets evolve dramatically throughout the months. The tera types were also changing, before everyone ran fairy but now there are some steel and water tera as well to adapt against Chien-Pao and Palafin. If you see the game in terms of sets instead of mons, the game becomes a lot more interesting. But allowing all the sub-legendaries from past gens is just a little too far and too much for a Regulation change just before Worlds. Especially since it doesn't even include the region's main legendaries.

Tera ice Regieleki is the best argument yet for the Pokémon Company to start banning specific Pokémon in vgc. That thing got banned from OU in like 10 minutes.

@@lvli044 Hehe, that's fair. I didn't think of that part personally. Thanks for telling me
Variety in competitive pokemon comes (largely) from different sets and spreads on the best pokemon.

Objectively I know it's the same either way, yet somehow the former just *feels* so much worse.
I honestly like your casual/natural speaking rhythm better than your presentational mode in your edited content. You have a very soothing affect.
BRUH WE GOT THE Bb MAJOR WOLFEY INTRO
Keep singing Wolfe ❤️
It really makes me wonder what they have planned for the rest of the year after the DLC hits
I know we get a bunch more Pokemon added after but man...they must have like a big shake-up happening with something with the meta because that's just so crazy to go all the in it already with the home release
For singles were eating good it's kind of crazy right now but for VGC it's going to be quite interesting to see how this plays out
My thoughts on the new format: WHO AUTHORISED THIS? WHY ARE THEY NOT IN TROUBLE? I know that this isn't the worst they could do but I was really excited for worlds in regulation c.
Bc its a good business decision to push Pokémon Home. Its about moving the most product, not providing the best one.
@@lvli044 Pokemon scarlet in a nutshell really
Change is hard, and chasing a moving target makes it hard to experience a metagame, especially with the investment of having to get the mons
to be fair, it takes half an hour to get a perfect shiny BR pokemon these days.
Yes, you could get regular Wooper in the game, from one if the teachers, after you finish all of their classes. But you just haven't been able to use it in competitive just like all other non Paldean Regional variants.
Galarian Meowth was from the teacher, Johtonian Wooper was an in-game trade. But yeah, in the game but not VGC legal
@@BPTK162 Oops, sorry, my mistake!! Thanks for the correction 😆
Quagsire and Perserker are available in game but weren't made competitive legal for whatever reason.
One niche I could foresee wyrdeer having is the fact it’s not only a trick room setter, it also has intimidate and has decent natural bulk. Nothing meta defining but paired with the right things it could be incredible
It's somehow really endearing to watch him struggle through the intro every time 😂
I think it's gonna be really fun to see all the new teams and how people adapt on the fly to the new meta
but that would’ve happened next year or something anyway lmao.
To reset for Enamorus' ivs you have to replay the entire game
Another reason why they should add an item for 0ivs
Just look at sw/sh teams. You'll have the exact same teams here
I'd prefer it to be all new (new) teams. The old ones are just the same old OP that's been around for some time.
I’m so happy that bonus Wolfe still does real youtubist intro it reminds me of when I started watching the goat back in day old ages
I completely agree. I think all legends should be banned from earning CP. It will never happen, apparently.
To out speed regi you need a base speed of 117. That’s ABSURD
80 power 100% accurate
With a 50!! percent chance to sleep, para, or poison
All on a mon with 120 base speed. Its not gonna be an offensive threat but as a support mon dire claw immediately gives it a niche.
Kleavor can set up rocks while attacking with a move that it gets stab and its ability on. It'll be very nice.
I am so sick of seeing legendaries. They limit team building so much because you either need to run them or you need to run their counters, which in most cases is another legendary.
Yay bonus Wolfe is back!!! I’ve missed this
as a ex-competitive player i am interested but apprehensive to how this is going to go. I always watch worlds anyway and usually some big tourneys throughout the year so it doesn't change much for me, but it's always sad to see the competitors unhappy with a change
H-Goodra actually got a major boost to its defense
I "missed" incineroar so much. I cant wait till he is on everyones team
Not even in the game?
As someone who play non legendaries for fun.. im screwed.
I may have to change that up
Really want to hear your thoughts on sneasler after you see dire claw.
You just save before you catch it, and reset if the IVs aren't what you want...And having low attack isn't actually that relevent, despite what Smogon like to think.
ursaluna holding leftovers, will o wisp it, switch into flamigo,
I hope vgc adds singles in because I think it would lead to more creative teams that would do good in both singles and doubles
Singles takes too long
Singles is so boring to play and watch
Singles can't be played effectively on an in-persn event.
@@GravityIsFalling From my experience in showdown, single battles have taken on average, around 5 minutes
@@C0DY420
Bitch how, each turn is 1 Min and there’s 12 mons
Classic Wolfe videos are back I’m so fucken happy 😭😭
Regieleki isn’t real it’s a hallucination made by the paradox Pokémon Iorn Mugulis
thank goodness iron mugulis is currently behind bars
I think Old Money might be pulling the strings from the background…
THANKS SO MUCH FOR DOING THIS STYLE CONTENT AGAIN I HONESTLY MISSED THIS
I think this would have been a really cool format if it weren’t for the inclusion of the legendaries, I think a lot of people would have been hyped to see just where the legends arceus mons end up after being locked up in non battle focused game
Yeah let’s not allowed articuno but allow ursaluna
@@GravityIsFalling I mean the legendaries allowed in this formats are absolutely disgusting, I can actually sees people supporting on this take on format like vgc. Ursaluna's still pain in the ass but 1 broken shit is less than 4-5.
@@GravityIsFalling In singles Legendary clause is stupid due to bans and tiers existing. But in doubles i genuinly believe it should be done, a lot of legends like the genies, regielecki, flutter mane, etc are just too centralizing
@@i_like_chomp6382
What about amongus (second most use Mon, forces many teams to have Tera grass or googles)
@@GravityIsFalling Thats just one mon, and it's mostly due to the fact that sleep is broken
Tera electric levitate cres here it comes…. The king of the field is here

"...you didnt have to ohko my feelings like that." 🤣😭
You raised a good point about some arceus mons being a pain to get.
A moment of silence right before talking about Refieleki
As a pure spectator (I just don't have the memory necessary to play) I have to say I'm pretty disappointed with this decision. I don't feel like the Paldean pokemon got enough time to shine, and now most of them are going to be cast aside in favour of older, more relible mons. I am curious which ones are strong enough to stick around, though. And at least terrastelisation is going to make sure that even with old pokemon, the game is still going to feel relatively new and exciting. To watch, at least.
PLEASE read what Sneasler's signature move Dire Claw does.
I love big strong titans going at it in the VGC arena so I honestly like this change, especially with the Hisui-pokemon being legal
19:25 “3 new good Pokémon”
And Wo-Chien took that personally
You've been doing great man! Your content has reached another level and you can clearly tell the amount of time and effort you've been bringing every day! Glad you could relax even though it's to talk about controversy LOLOL! Keep it up!
I really enjoyed being limited to the Pokémon I can choose from. But now it feels like I’m forced to go to mons that are much stronger
