This is good timing!! I’ve been thinking about patterns I could/would make for the guys in my life. Especially as my dad, uncle, and grandpa have all started asking for handmades 😅. Def have to think of compromise of something that will fit and they will enjoy without killing me during the making process. My uncle admired a full cable knit I just made myself and requested it in all black 😩😬🫢. I immediately went to ravelry to look for simpler options. I actually love the original design you made for your husband but bottom up is not my fave. It sucks that it didn’t fit as expected. That is my least favorite part about making for others, especially if they can’t try on during the making process.
I always love a pattern roundup. I'm currently looking for something for my brother, so this was great. I have knit the Redford before, and it's really nice.
The intro made me laugh, not least because I had a similar experience. My son's beautiful cabled sweater was too small, but I now have said sweater in regular rotation in my own wardrobe!😊
I bought the Redford sweater pattern and then decided I disliked all the details you mentioned! I ended up making the Cricket Classic also by Julie Hoover but omitting the colorwork on the bottom and it worked really well as a basic set-in sleeve pattern for a man.

I'm glad you're getting use out of it despite it not fitting your son! Have you attempted making him another sweater yet?
He's had numerous sweaters I've knit over many years (he's 50), and hats, etc. Don't know why this was a miscalculation, but I'm kinda glad it was!😉
