also Rename Weapon mod lets pawns randomly rename their own weapons for flavor, similar functionality to what you suggested with animals getting names. On a quick glance I don't see anything exactly like that for animals and I agree that is a good idea.
I agree more or less with the mods stuff. However, I feel that Ludeon incorporates the most popular mods and I think that's better than most, ex: wall lights being 1.5.
