Bret Hart's best athletic moves (70s-90s tribute)

- While many of these moves are common today, Bret helped change the face of heavyweight pro wrestling from the late 1970s to the early 1990s, as plodding types were gradually forced to share the main event spotlight with super-workers. His in-ring style was still rooted in chain wrestling and storytelling (Bret wasn't an "aerial wrestler"), but he incorporated an impressive agility that was rarely seen in the WWF prior to his arrival in 1984. Daredevil performers such as Chris Jericho, Seth Rollins, Sami Zayn, Daniel Bryan and Christian have named Bret as a prominent influence on their style.
All footage belongs to WWE. I have used clips of less than 15 seconds in length to create a representation of the subject's work. This non-profit video meets fair use standards.
Bret's athletic moves worked because they were usually done in the right context. He didn't just fly all over the place for no reason. There was always a logic to what he did.
Vince: "Logic? What does it mean dammit?!"
That's why I don't like much new wrestling. Bunch of 170lbs manlets who can't tell a story so they have to resort to destroying their bodies with needless dives.
Unlike the Young Bucks, Ricochet and Balor
Agree..look dangerous but it safe for the athlet when its done with the right contact..
@@DisastrousIntentionally No, WWE now are acquiring indies to make their show more on the indie related, problem is most of the indies are only good in ring, but suck at mic skills and story telling. They keep flopping around like they are in zero gravity
And didn't injure a single talent in all of his entire career.
Where injury ended his career. WCW gave career injury and WWF which gave him life injury (or injury for life)
Most fans dont realize how important that was.
Best incident of this is when he had a match against Davy boy Smith Davy was messed up real bad that day did something that made him out of it so Brett carried the British bulldog throughout the whole match and neither suffered injury
That's why everyone were glad to work with him
His brother did tho lol
Even though they hated each other back in the day, the in ring chemistry between Bret and HBK was nothing short of legendary.
I was fan of hbk but when I saw Bret Hart moves...HBK is nothing in front of him...I think Bret could bit Brock also
@@thirstyfish7315 Early 90s Bret would have been a great adversary for Brock. He was the right size to be thrown around for a while, but then make a credible comeback. I imagine the match would have played out a bit like Bret vs. Bam Bam.
Bret is pure pro wrestler while hbk is politician
@Yuvi Amany Brets moves I feel would work in an MMA environment...
@Yuvi A omg well said. Bret hart is what wrestling is supposed to look like.
In my opinion, Bret Hart fits the bill of being the "perfect" pro wrestler. Decent height and weight so that people don't amount him to a vanilla midget; he looked jacked but not "steroid jacked", had a good physique and no obesity. Very good technician who could tie ropes around you with an amazing work rate and great endurance. Had athletic offense so that he didn't feel too boring with his grappling, another area which he was great at. Charisma. Passion. Awareness. That's why he's The Excellence of Execution.
Having the pedigree in his family helped. Particularly having his father, Stu, teaching him everything the tough, strict and disciplinarian method was one of the main reasons Brett was GOAT status! He belongs in the Mt. Rushmore of professional wrestling (with Hogan, Taker and Vince).
@@nikolaivista920 Hogan lacks ability. Just pure star power. Brett was the complete package. Shawn Michaels should take the place of hogan on ur list
He was just under 6ft and well proportioned with an athletic physique but you could tell his bone structure was larger then the average guy that height , he didn’t have to work hard to be 235 lbs .
Bret Hart was considered a smaller guy back in the 1990s when him and Shawn Michaels were Vince's top two talents.
@@budgie2322 you should see Hogan's matches against Bob Backlund and his New Japan stuff. He could wrestle, but Vince limited what he could do when he became the top guy and when he switched to WCW he began to manage the damage he took to make his career last longer.
I can’t even get past that first drop kick, what a thing of beauty
You aren't kidding, gorgeous!
@@jeremysmith-hx1xp The first drop kick was textbook, but equally sweet was the smooth transition into the Sharpshooter on Benoit (Benoit's "frantic" attempts to get out of it and his seamless contort really sold the move. It's great seeing two technicians at the height of their game. It's a shame that anything with Benoit in it has stink attached)
@@kernalbert4939 every single move he did was textbook.
His movement was so fluid. No one will ever convince me that Bret isn't the greatest overall performer of all time.
Exactly. How anyone can say it was Flair is beyond me or am I missing something that everyone else seems to get?
@@neilj6322 Flair came first, had an unforgettable character, had a longer run on top, and was a great worker for his time. Bret was better in-ring, though, with superior strength, mat skills, athleticism, psychology and storytelling. His tight, realistic work is ageing much better than Flair's pantomime shtick.
@@jpalvarez4972 What about Benoit?

I feel mad when someone says Shawn Michael is number one wrestler, for me Bret is and will be always the best wrestler in history

Aww dude that would've been cool. Angle lock v Sharpshooter!
We would've seen it if it wasn't for Vince & his boy toy.
I always loved how Bret made his moves look, a suplex, back breaker, even something as simple as a leg drop, he made everything look effortless and silky smooth. Truly the excellence of execution.
dennisbergkamp17 no disrespect to the Undertaker, but Bret had the best punches.. they looked real and connected well.
Brett is my all time favorite wrestler . He made it look real .
Just like Dennis Bergkamp!
Bret hart was the best, but Bret hart was a very safe worker and made sure he didn't hurt his opponents! Bret hart is the best there Is, best there was, best there very will be!
most def....! he does everything well. to this day, his Russian leg sweep is my favorite out of any other wrestler.
I had the pleasure of watching Bret Hart wrestle at live events. His technical wrestling style and athleticism always kept me engaged in his matches. He made wrestling fun to watch and not about blood baths. Additionally I also had the pleasure of meeting Bret personally. He’s a warm genuine person who shows his sincere appreciation for his fans-he always has a warm welcoming smile for me! Thanks very much for this compilation!
No wonder why he is called “The Excellence of Execution”
Bret Hart is what made me a wrestling fan.

Amen to that, never seen someone execute so precise.
Bret was the best at making wrestling look real.
Yes. It was harder to appreciate at the time bc guys in general were just way better workers back then, but today where every single match looks ridiculously fake, every second of it, every move, every reaction, every everything, looks very fake, you really appreciate what Hart did. And guys in general back in the day.
Today I learn the real definition of in ring technician. His moves were so efficient
Bret did the moves quick but with perfect technique. He truly was the excellenc of execution. That wasn't just a nickname given to make him sound cool but that was an actual given name to him because of his amazing style of work
Yep! He is one of the very few wrestlers that didn’t need a gimmick, all he needed was a wrestling ring to do his magic in!
Despite not being flashy and despite not being a big talker on the mic, Hitman had a quiet charisma, a crisp and powerful moveset, and was one of the SAFEST and most well-trained wrestlers of all-time. Hart was able to tell a story without having to slobber all over the mic and cut cray promos. He could put on an amazing, emotive match without being ostentatious. Hart was a true professional, and one of the best of all time. Truly, The Excellence of Execution.
Quiet charisma is right. Balor wears all the Demon paint and I just shrug. Bret walking out with the shades and leather jacket....he just felt like a big deal.
That charisma is what catches the eye without saying a word or doing nothing. That not even trying or wanting but still getting all the attention.
You can't learn that, you either have it or you don't
You knew Brett was legit as a wrestler. He'd got that serious edge despite the pink and black and you you knew any match he was in would be a spectacle for the right reasons. Some of these modern guys just seem like the local loudmouth at the bar and it's boring.
He was amazing...... The best wrestler of all times.... His entry in ring with that music... Wow... And his moves very safe and clean...
Bret didn't even need to say a word. His demeanor and person he was in WWE in those mid 90's was Jordan-esque. The things he could do in the ring were next level.
Something you have appreciate about Bret Hart skill was he knew when to use his athleticism. He never overused it so when he did do something incredible, it stood out that much more. He made the crowd earn it. He didn't just give it away.
It's like when a DJ avoids over playing a popular song so that it doesn't get over played because eventually every popular tune gets overplayed and people get tired of hearing it.
Young'uns have to appreciate just how long ago, and how groundbreaking, this all was. Bret stood at the vanguard of a movement of spirited workers who turned Western heavyweight wrestling on its head, and slayed the plodding, entirely mat-based dinosaurs of the past. Unlike less judicious members of that new wave, though, Bret never once looked choreographed or hokey. The GOAT!
Bret Hart, in my opinion, is the goat. He was truly a trailblazer, I put him right up there with The Dynamite Kid.
"Bret never once looked choreographed or hokey."
Yip, he was great at striking a balance. Too much of the shit today, albeit acrobatically impressive, just doesn't make any damn sense. They run through moves, Finishers only work in squash matches, nothing is sold and some of the diving moves (especially out of the ring and on to the floor) are so dialed in, it's laughable. Never looks convincing.
MightyJabroni Ospreay makes me roll my eyes so much. Doing flips effortlessly 20 minutes into what’s supposed to be a knock down drag out fight.
Or even.worse
..the non wrestling big guys who just had 1 or two moves....not naming names.......
So true...and unfortunately, wrestling went way too far in that direction. There needed to be a better balance
Bret did come up with clever stuff hands down. You can tell he put some thought into his matches.
0:12 That roll into a hammer lock is legit one of the most impressive "wrestling" spots I've seen. Watching Bret Hart wrestle was kinda like watching guys like Bob Backlund work. They were both just sooooo much better at the "wrestling" part of "pro wrestling" than everyone else they faced, and it showed.
It's so beautiful. Bret is a magician
0:33, 0:36, 0:49, 1:16, and 1:53 stand out to me! Bret was smooth as silk as usual undertaker/mark put it and he was absolutely right!
Been a wrestling fan for almost 55 years. The Hitman is probably my favorite wrestler of all time. His style, athletic ability, and excellence of execution made him the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be.
Hitman fan since childhood.
Bret was a great technical wrestler but a very underrated athlete.
buddy Robinson he is THE number 1 technical wrestler of all time, Benoit 2nd, Angle 3rd, Shawn, 4th Mr.Perfect 5th
buddy Robinson Technically Benoit would be the most underrated. At least Bret is still recognized for his work, rather Benoit's work can't get the credit he really deserves.
in my mind dynamite was better than benoit
Folks are forgetting Rick Rude and Bob Backlund, one of the finest technical in ring performers. Even bret hart acknowledged that Rude was amongst the best.
+alex kanyima Never would I rate Shawn Michaels anywhere near even the top 50 technical wrestlers of all time. Michaels' style was more about acrobatics, high spots, and flamboyance. He was remarkable at those things but a wrestling technician he was not. Actually, of the two Rockers, Marty Jannetty was more technically sound of a mat wrestler than Shawn. I would say the top five greatest, most polished technical wrestlers ever would be (1) Bret Hart, (2) Curt Hennig, (3) the Dynamite Kid, (4) Eddie Guerrero, and (5) Chris Benoit. [Note: I despise the unspeakable evil this man committed and know he will spend eternity in hell for his sins, but that doesn't change the historical fact that Benoit was, at one time, one of the best wrestlers in the world.]
The best there is
The best there was
The best there ever will be

And Still!
The Mantis

The Hitman, Brett Hart
Amen
Never caused any serious injuries
Barely ever missed a match
Barely ever refused to accept a loss
My favorite wrestler of all time. Bret was never boring to watch. Not only with his technical skills, but his selling of being "injured" at times...you couldn't tell if he were really hurt or not.
Over 100 moves at his disposal. Taught by the best to be the best.. Legend.
Forgot how good the Hitman was. That's the art of pro wrestling. Make it look real without hurting your opponent. Nobody better.
Better than HBK. Weird to say but this guy is actually underrated. He could run and fly with just about anyone back then but he was sooo believable.
Power, speed, and submission all in one package.
Yes brooo... Better than that chicken shit hbk
Every move had its place and every move felt natural. No wasted energy and a lot of creativity. The "big man" fetish Vince had really held back what might have been an even more incredible era, especially when you had HBK in his prime, and the Stone Cold.
I wonder what Bret Hart in the prime of the Attiude Era would have looked like--if they built a program/angle that satisfied him (somehow) enough to stay after Montreal.
More like overscrewed. Screwed by wwf then wcw after that
I wouldn't really say underrated. Back in the 90's, Bret Hart was known all around the world. Back home where I lived, all my older cousins and every kid I knew had only posters of one wrestler, and it was Bret Hard. It wasn't until I moved to Canada and noticed how big Stone Cold and the rest of them were. Bret was an international icon.
Bret's move were very fluid. And his timing was perfect.
One of my all-time favourite wrestlers. He was one of those who took this entertainment/sport to a new level, having the classic moves with some edge. Let's be honest, no other man can be as cool as The Hitman while wearing pink. 😏
He executes them all very beautifully, no botching
its like he has an excellence.....
Such a logical wrestler.. No false moves... Excellent
Bret flipping into the wristlock at 0:12 was absolutely gorgeous.
Aaron Wrotkowski awesome
A true master of his craft.
Art
He is the reason why i believed wrestling was real as a kid. I remember it was in his matches i felt nervous if he would lose the match. Haha those were the days.
I was the same way but for HBK I hated when he would lose.
That's because Bret was trained in the real martial art of catch wrestling.
Wow! Yeah, as a kid I remember feeling nervous too if Bret seemed as if he'd lose a match.
That cage match at SummerSlam set the standard for all cage matches. Some criticize it for being repetitious, but it's really a fun, beautifully executed match between two brothers with remarkable trust and chemistry. I love it.
Man everything he did was so believable.
Bret Hart definitely deserves credit for helping to pave the way for the style of wrestling that is seen today in places like ROH, WWE, NJPW and other promotions. The best ever to lace a pair of boots.
85futureshock Bret pace and agility was very good
Bret Hart should be credited for the X-Division in GFW Impact as well.
Bret, the British Bulldogs, they were the first wave of these wrestlers with international experience that fit into the WWF main event style while bringing in their experience. Before WWF, Bret took a few of tours in NJPW, and worked with Tiger Mask and other Jr. Heavtweight wrestlers there. In later years, Jericho, Guerrero, (name restricted), Malenko, Mysterio and others would follow the same path. Before them, when North American wrestlers went there, they usually forced the Japanese wrestlers to wrestle the North American style match. But Hart, the Bulldogs, and Owen traveled the world. Actually Owen got to wrestle Jushin Liger, Hiroshi Hase and held the NJPW Jr. Heavyweight title. Of that era though, Bret was the best, and those wrestlers paved the way for other global wrestlers to dominate the WWF/E, like the ones named above and later Daniel Bryan, Samoa Joe and others.
Uncle Jericho Wants YOU!!! HBK as well.
I feel like both Bret and HBK set the blue print for today's style with two different categories. Bret being the best technical and HBK being the best performer aka all rounder.
Thats why down the lines here things were set from Bret to Benoit, Angle, Punk, and Daniel Bryan. With HBK its from him to Jericho and now AJ, Kenny and Seth.
Now if we want to talk about lucha styles paving the way into the style that is today then that's where I say Eddie and Mysterio did that.
I agree
The pin from Pipers Sleeperhold was so sick when it first happened. No one had ever seen that. Bret was so technical.
Bret did alot of things That people had never seen before, That is What todays wrestling lacks, the wrestlers today does the same old stuff over and over again
Word. Several very unique finishes. Mastermind. Best there is was and ever will be
Shame he wasn’t really “a teacher.” Could have become the best wrestling trainer of all time. Never seen anyone else as consistent for as long as Hart was.
Bret was smooth as silk in the ring
0:36 Now THAT was the best reversal of Shawn's Teardrop Suplex I have ever seen!
chet michael The tear drop suplex never had the impact or visual appeal as the Super kick did as a finisher, Sweet Chin Music ended up being one of the best things about Shawn Michaels in the ring
But it would've been cool of he had kept it around in his arsenal, it's a unique move that I haven't seen used really all that much if at all besides Shawn in the early 90's
the small package to razor ramon was better
chet michael oh boy if u think it grew old of just him using it I wonder how you feel now that half the roster uses it
Systematic, methodical, technical and scientific...Bret incorporated all of those attributes within his framework of wrestling ability. And he executed it all, with excellence. That’s why he is the ‘best there is-the best there was-and the best there ever will be’.
Bret hart is awesome
Probably the best wrestler in wwe history

Hitman is something else...wow ! So lucky to have watched his matches in prime. None in current WWE come close to his execution and fluidity.
He was a proper wrestler. Trained from childhood. This latest crop are just goons pumped with steroids with just a few signature moves and no imagination. The 80s/90s was the golden age of wrestling. No doubt about it.
That Bret vs Owen match at WM10 when went on to beat Yokozuna after losing to his brother is one of the best wrestling matches I've seen .
Storyline, rythm/intensity , technique and twists were insane

He's the best in my opinion. I have no problem with anyone who says Savage, Flair, Angle, Michaels, but they'll never convince me. I can and sometimes do watch Bret Hart wrestle all day....
One cannot simply earn the name "The excellence of execution". His movements were very fluid, had a purpose behind it, Not pulled every tricks he could in a single match, not felt utterly choreographed with opponents cooperating for the spots in an abrupt manner.
Bret's wrestling is beautiful. He gives a move flawlessly but takes even more so. Focus on him after he sells a move. Great storyteller. Best there ever was and will be!
I loved how Bret Hart is a master of all areas of wrestling. He can grapple down at the mat, he can strike, he can use the rope/turnbuckle, he can fly. He is a true all around threat.
This helps prove why he was "the excellence of execution"
A lot of people do not realize that in Bret Hart' s prime as a singles star he was 31 (1988) and he was very under-rated athletically. Watch the WM 10 with his Brother Owen Hart and you'll see. He was 36 at that time of that match in 1994
Samuel shaffer Shit, you're right. I constantly forget that Bret was pretty old when he finally got his big break as a singles star
In the profession of wrestling I think being in your early to mid 30s is actually the right time to be on top of your game. This isn't soccer or American Football where you're retired with CTE and broken bones by the time you're 30. Hart was obviously the first to do it but you see how guys like HBK and AJ Styles wrestled absolute classics even in their 40s
@@risavsahu4666 Yeah, wrestlers tend to have their prime much later, which makes sense. They're still in good enough shape that they can go, but unlike something like football they don't need to be able out muscle or out run everybody else, something that favors younger guys. And they have enough experience to know what to do, when, and why. So it's just the right balance of experience and youth. Hell, DDP didnt even START wrestling until he was in his mid to late 30's and already had a career as a club owner behind him!
Hitman is a legend and legends never fade, they shine brighter with time.
A true Hero.

My no. 1 fav Hitman BretHart ... I used to draw sketches of him in my primary school books ... What a golden era 90s was ...miss those old beautiful days.
Bret Hart was 'practical effects' whereas a lot of today's prowrestlers are 'CGI'. Everything Bret did had a certain 'weight' to it, his matches never felt choreographed like a lot of modern-day matches do.

These moves were telling us stories and built the matches so well, when done on the ring. They were believable.
Adore Bret Hart. He made wrestling believable to me. He told a story every match, no matter who the opponent. Unreal talent.
It absolutely boggles my mind that we live in a time where we can actually say.... this man is an underrated wrestler.
After years of being known as one of, if not THE, greatest worker ever, we now have to remind people how good he actually was. People under the age of 20 seem to have NO idea.
WWE refuses to propagandise him the way they do with overrated talents like Triple H and Roman Reigns. Bret had beef with Vince and went to WCW: two "sins" that will be forever held against him.
The difference between Brett and all the new guys is....... Brett is a real wrestler
...The excellence of execution ❤
Come for the Rock and Cena, stay for Hart, Angle, Benoit, and Guererro.
They don't wrestle like this anymore
They darn well should though.
sadly just few today could wrestle for few minutes like bret did for hours in past... not much talent and technique today. they focus on speed power and promos...
No one can do such things in all honesty...
They actually do it in the Cruiserweight division, where guys are lighter and more athletic. There are always the indie promotions and japanese wrestling as well.
No they don't, they can't.
Bret Hart made me believe wrestling was real when i was a kid..he was legit compared to wrestlers now..always will be my favorite of all time
He was so good. Him and Owen were so technical and great at selling the match. They could tell a story and have the crowd react anyway they want. In 1993 I bought a pair of his glasses for $14.95 through the WWF Catalog.
Bret Hart is so athletic that he put a pair of blue tights into the sharpshooter at 1:30 of the video
Underrated comment
Bret Hart still to this day works a match better than anybody on the planet.
Bret Hart could square off with a broom handle, work a great story in and somehow put the broom over.
Big fuckin facts bro. Bret was the best
🧹
Bret was the most gifted technical pro wrestler bar none...his move set was as he put it "the excelence of execution
Bret Hart + Queen = Awesome!
People do wrestling moves all the time. But the way Bret does it is different. They are so perfect and clean and overall pretty to watch.
As a pure wrestler..not entertainer or artist or actor, but as a pure wrestler...bret has to be one of the all time greats
There will never be another wrestler like Bret. He really was the best. He doesn't get enough credit for how athletic he actually was and he was doing suicide dives before they became cool. Imagine if Bret was in his prime during this era of wrestling? The matches he would have had would have been incredible.
God I feel like crying over the injustices Bret suffered in his career. We were totally robbed of such an excellent wrestler staying active in wrestling for as long as he should have been. Imagine Bret vs Kurt, or even Bret vs Randy Orton during his "Legend Killer" phase.
Bret vs Kurt is my dream match
Would have loved to see Bret and Kurt Angle in an iron man match.
Arkham Squirrel Submission match. It only needs one fall.
Eric Burton This
Wow... Mouth-waterring man!!!
Bret kick ass for sure
That would be a match for the ages.
Several guys ran him close, but nobody exceeded Bret in terms of in-ring storytelling. He was the best to ever step in the ring and I doubt anyone will ever surpass him. He executed every move flawlessly, dreamt up dozens of amazing stories and did it all without ever seriously injuring a colleague.
No wasted movements.
His body language was always his greatest promos including his 1997
Bret Hart always gave his best in all matches
