This is one of the best educational chess videos I've seen. Perfect blend of general and positional knowledge and insight. Anna covered it all, from the general stratgey of the opening theory, the general strategy at certain points of the game, specific reasons for particular moves, and insight into her thinking as well as her opponent's. A great video for "how to get better at chess" especially for a hobbyist player such as myself, who quite frankly, could care less about what Stockfish considers to be the best move order. I know these type of videos aren't for everyone, but I hope she'll continue to put them out with some regularity.

Inspired play for a player of any age, let alone a 16 year old playing an IM. It was because Anna was able to "think out of the box" we call a chess board that she was able to pull it off. The knight sacrifice in that position is one of the most brilliant moves I've seen.
Your way of retelling this is so great. I love how you explain what you were thinking and talk about what would have been a better move. Also, you just seem so happy whenever you are talking about chess. I wish I could play chess well enough to be worth your time to play. :)

That kind of miscalculation as described by you (when you miss that after some moves a pivotal part of the position has changed [too] ) is very common. Grandmaster Krogius, who was also a certified psychologist, described that in his book on psychology in chess.
At four times your current age, I use chess to exercise my brain…your teaching style and the speed you talk are absolutely perfect for me…I loved the way you described this game…the weakness of certain positions, the strengths, the alternative moves and their likely outcomes just jump starts my learning. Really interesting game. Would love to see more of your D4 openings and explanations as to how you deal with black's responses, as I prefer D4 myself but often get into trouble within just 10 or 12 moves - usually when trying to transition out of the opening into the middle game. I often castle Queen's side as you did in this game but I find it a two-edged sword, giving aggressive counter play (and sometimes winning a tempo) but at the price of a relatively vulnerable king. I can't express how impressed I was with your cool defence of the king in a position where I'm sure I would have crumbled under the pressure.
I can stay here listening her explanations literally for hours. She is so energetic and positive and so clear that is impossible to retain a smile. Thanks Anna!!!!

At 34:33, if he goes R:b2, you also had Rc8+, and when he takes it with his rook, you go Qc8+, which he has to defend with Qf8. After you exchange queens on c8, you capture his last remaining rook on b2, and you end up with a King, a rook on h1, and 5 pawns against his King and 3 pawns! Anyway congrats for the awesome game you played against a strong IM!!! You are real pleasure to follow! Keep iup the good work, Anna!!!

Chess is strange game in that a win is often achieved just one move ahead of defeat. He was so intent on putting the ‘knife to you throat move’ that he overlooked your ‘knife to his ribs’ Q-H7 move.

Am I missing why you can't just capture his bishop after a check by moving Q to A4 after he chooses to move pawn to D6? Edit: the answer was yes, I was lol. Cause he can just bring Knight out to protect, which lets him activate peices faster with no gain.
I initially thought: "43 minutes? No way I am going to watch it all". And instead this was so thrilling that I could not possibly stop watching for a second. Congratulations for the great communication skills.. and of course for the great win! :)

In the position you were afraid of in minute 34:32 you also had the move RC8 winning at least a full rook exchanging queens and a rook at the same time just ending the game.
I don't really play chess anymore (lots of other board games, though), but I find your videos fascinating and I learned a lot from this one. It took me a minute and a half and I didn't predict everything afterwards correctly, but I did realize that move would put the opponent in a hopeless position. I guess it's easily missed because it is counter-intuitive unless you understand the damage it does to the opponent's position. And I would likely not have thought along those lines if I hadn't watched several of your others videos. Something, which I will keep doing, as I really love the strategic explanations and the way you demonstrate the emotions that go into it. Keep up the good work! 🙂PS: Not to be negative, but the reason just is, it isn't because. ;-)
When you get older, you might find yourself one day looking back on that moment of your past and be reminded of the excitement and joy you once experienced then as you looked upon a younger opponent before you, eager to beat you as an IM, and reminding you of yourself when were that age; and in that moment you'll quickly learn exactly why, you too would've found yourself with the biggest smile when maybe you might also choose to surrender early in the game, instead of continuing to fight for the win, just as Mr. Rodriguez had done. Props for still remaining, for the most part, humble about this past experience of yourself, I'd sure like to see your breakdown of what happens after white rook to D1 even if engine says +67. I mean, after all... ...all it takes is just one plunder, right?
Anna your chess playing attitude is excellent ; like a brave warrior you don't seem to have much fear ; often the purpose is not to win or lose - but to improve (and help your opponents to improve) ; there might be many ways to improve .
I’m learning something new every time I watch your videos. But I am still nervous about playing more OTB games because it didn’t go so well. Just started playing almost two years ago during Covid. Then cancer, now back in at 68. But video help me see things like how important pawn structure is and their use. I never new. I thought they were expendable. I think of 2 or more pawns as a barbed wire fence. They are relatively inactive, and you can safely stand next to them, but only if you're careful. Also, like a fence, a string of pawns can be moved, but only slowly, one post at a time.

Reinforcing the center, allowing for a pawn break? 21:31 how about Bc6? the pawn protects your bishop, whilst simultaneously your bishop attacks the rook and black's bishop So if they move the rook, you can still take, or if they take the bishop, then you have created a passed pawn by taking back.
34:51 I should be so lucky to see that the rook blocked the Queen Once per Game, much less miss it once per game. I think your visualization must be very good. Having Seen Pia Analyze, I expect her's are a whole other magnitude. But it is quite Cool. TY for sharing this great moment in your chess life with us.

Somehow instinct also told me Ng6+. But I'm not trained in theory and slow in calculation. I managed to see that if black takes with queen, he loses his rook for the knight (didn't look far enough to see it is a full rook up). And I also saw that taking with pawn exposes the black king to white's rooks. I didn't even consider the line where king just steps aside, I'd be surprised by that one.

What is meant by "theory", established patterns of play from established layouts? To me, that pawn was just begging to move to d5 earlier. I must have missed the consequences. I enjoy seeing those type of revealed attacks, like the knight fork if the queen had taken on c3, 26:23 and if the pawn were to take the knight on d5, 28:21. Learning to see those ahead of time, just reflexively, is going to take awhile.
What other sport can take you years in the past, let you bring others in the room to relive it. Beautiful game. Not only does Chess post-Mortem’s crush you, it makes you a hero in your own story.

To me, that pawn was just begging to move to d5 earlier. I must have missed the consequences.
I enjoy seeing those type of revealed attacks, like the knight fork if the queen had taken on c3, 26:23 and if the pawn were to take the knight on d5, 28:21. Learning to see those ahead of time, just reflexively, is going to take awhile.
What other sport can take you years in the past, let you bring others in the room to relive it. Beautiful game. Not only does Chess post-Mortem’s crush you, it makes you a hero in your own story.
