I can't believe, that Doc was here 83 years young, not old. I love this tune, this video and both musicians so much. At the moment I hear this tune every day here.
great solo exchange duet, my fav part is the solos ending wen they play together ...around 3min 50s....such a powerful sound for an then 83 yeard old trumpet player...wow!
More than anything this collaboration reminds me of Doc and Maynard playing together. Not everyone realizes that when they were both still teenagers, and in their early twenties, Doc and Maynard both played in the Charlie Barnett Orchestra . . .at the same time. Doc took lead and Maynard screamed. Can you imagine going to a concert where Doc and Maynard are in the same band, in their prime? Truly awesome! They were friends for life and Doc was so saddened when Maynard died. Long live Doc!
@PhilGorman1957 thanks for sharing that. I've been a big fan of Maynard, Doc & Arturo since I was a teen. I can only DREAM of seeing what you described. I'm so lucky to have seen Doc! Seen Arturo several times (it just doesn't get any better!) But only saw Maynard when he was already quite old. Also, unbelievable to imagine young Bill Chase on Maynard's bandstand! Thankfully there are recordings of that :) My ultimate dream though, would be to see Arturo, Paquito & Chucho play together again.
I have spoken to both of them, since then. Arturo and Doc really enjoyed the camaraderie and opportunity to play together. Any confusion would have been based solely on the fact this was an impromptu performance they had not really rehearsed. Doc began playing precisely where he should have come in based on the form of the song. I think he planned to play a duet there and Arturo simply gave way out of respect. There were no toes stepped on!
Just sitting here laughing at these two playing such high notes like a couple of high school kids again. lol. Their high notes sound a lot better together than the highschoolers notes do, though. lol.
@mhstpt great comment! I can't stand reading comments of people who don't GET what you're talking about. The same thing is there in Stevie Wonder's duet with Tony Bennett (For Once in My Life) their mutual respect elevates each other to one of the best musical moments I've EVER seen, it's so beautiful makes me want to cry!
@WoodenBadger77 I have found that artists appreciate one another, even those who generally perform in different genres. I have thoroughly enjoyed all of Tony Bennett's collaborations, as he spreads the Gospel of the American Songbook to new generations. More importantly, he has opened up the stylistic universe to performers (and their fans!) as diverse as K.D. Lang, Aretha Franklin and Lady Gaga. I agree that wonderful musical collaborations borne of mutual respect are worthy of a tear or two.
No sé el nombre de ésta canción pero me parece que fuese un potpourri improvisado de música mejico flamenca con el inconfundible toque de Doc Severinsen y Arturo Sandoval, grandes de la trompeta de todos los tiempos.
The way Arturo reacted was showing his regard for Doc, his enjoyment of collaboration and his sheer joy at performing music. Rafael was not miffed - look at how he reacted at 4:08. You are looking at giants. Arturo, who played with Dizzy and Doc, who has played with everyone, since the 40's both understand the value of collaboration at the highest levels. Don't mistake their reactions as other than two entertainers having a ball. They weren't competing - not at that level!
jesse. A night in tunisia (actually an entire weekend) by arturo has insane range, more than what doc shows in stardust. they both slay mad hard though. by far the two greatest players in the world
The way Arturo reacted is easily explained as such. Trumpet players have the biggest egos anyone could imagine. Arturo thought Doc was through with his solo, but Doc kept playing as to shut out Arturo. He wanted to show off to Arturo
wow Arturo nailed it at 2:27. and Doc.. i can't believe that this man was 83 the time video were shot. thats a video with 2 trumpet legends
only doc could rock that outrageous suit.

Goosebumps... 2 Legends of the trumpets in honor of a great legend, Rafael Mendez. He was smiling in the heavens during this performance.
it's amazing to see 2 trumpet players of that caliber play together.
From about 2:40 to 4:00 is about as good as it gets. Two simply amazing players paying tribute to one that was their equal or better.

Biggest wish to get as good as these two over here. Love them one of my idols
A couple of the undisputed greats..thanks for posting

theoj mandude Yes, both are great, no doubt
These 2 are great no doubt, but don't forget that classical soloist like Sergei nakariakov also have amkzing skills
Doc doesn't even need a mic. He can fill up that room without one.
