Mika Todd was scouted she did not audition and neither did the other members of Coconuts. They are a different case. And you don't have to be from Japan, but I belive for the most part that you have to know Japanese and you have live there. One of the H!P kid members (I forget which) is American since she was born in Boston. But she is 100% japanese.

Project in 1999 after being discovered by Makoto, fellow Sharan Q bandmate of Tsunku. Along with Ayaka Kimura, Danielle Delaunay, April Barbaran and Chelsea Ching, Coconuts Musume was formed. Their faces just seem stricken with a painful awe. It's a happy upbeat song, but they aren't quite feeling it. Though, I guess getting pummeled with everything all at once is a lot to take. 1. You 4 won this very difficult to win audition. 2. Your life now belongs to the company. 3. You will do televised and live performances and concerts routinely. 4. You will become great singer-dancers. 5. You will be national idols. 6. You will become talented singers and dancers that are well paid.
First, you have to be from Japan xD Basically, sign up and go to the audition. There are a few criteria, though... For most auditions now, you have to have graduated 7th grade, but that's as much as I know.
You don't have to be from Japan. Many members, such as Mika Todd, isn't from Japan. She's from America, or Australia. There are also Chinese members. Can't you just speak Japanese without being Japanese and audition? Also, do you know how to sign up?
I think it's her popularity, with Koharu I mean. She is pretty, and is a seiyuu in kirarin revolution as well, which could help boost momosu's popularity ^^ but hey, that's just my opinion ^^ she has a unique voice and a unique way of breaking all syllables if she could, they just don't sound so well...
Actually I think they're crying because they're being faced with the reality that this is what they're going to be doing! They are going to be national idols
I can't say I'm a Koharu fan, her being dubbed "miracle" somewhat bothers me as well, but the members of Morning Musume appear more and more as time goes on. An example would be Yossie, who wasnt featured much in Do it! Now and Happy Summer Wedding at all, but later gets the most solo lines in any one song than any other member in Mr. Moonlight Ai no Big Band, which also happens to be the first time the 5th Gen appears in a single.

Mika Todd isn't a member of Morning Musume and JunJun and LinLin are special cases. You have to be in Japan and sign up for one of the auditions.
