Which ScotRail trains is your favourite. I have to say the Class 43 HST "Inter7City" and Class 385 AT200.
love the 'over music' you chose..🎶
The ✖
ppppppp
Please don't apologise for the music. - I enjoyed it. A very great deal more pleasant than some of your competitors/colleagues choose!
I agree wholeheartedly The music was fantastic! The rhythm fit perfectly with the speed of the passing scenery.
I'll join the chorus if approval of the use of music. It's got a boldness that fits the terrain viewed and your overall quick, confident style.
It’s a great choice ☺️
Music was good
Turbostars are good trains, comfortable and quiet, but they're not suited to long distance intercity routes like these. Thankfully it will be Inter7City HST's now!
Except a year on, it still isn't exclusively HSTs🤣
I did this journey quite some time ago (must be about 12, 13 years ago now) and found the 170 very comfortable indeed. I had no problems with legroom and I am tall - and this seating looks unchanged from when I went. Would be miffed if I bought first class and there were no such seats, but I was far too poor for that back then. I don't know why but a lot of railway fans seem to hate turbostars, when I can only praise them for being a significant cut above, certainly better than a 158.
At least the 170's still have reasonably comfortable seats, the replacement seats ScotRail installed on the 156's on the West Highland Line are terrible, especially for a long run like Glasgow to Fort William or Mallaig.
@@SPTSuperSprinter156 I'd rather a 158 than a 170 personally. Maybe that's just me but ...
@@SPTSuperSprinter156 158s over reliability but yes 170s over legroom comfort. HSTs obviously take the win lol
I liked the music, fits the ambiance well.
Thankful to see that refurbished 125s are taking over from these on many lines... Turbostars are fine for a 30 minute journey but just aren't up to scratch for Intercity travel.
In my opinion I find the 170s a great train great comfort quiet and fast. Trolly service is to be expected and is always going to be a bit more expensive than going to a supermarket but I still find them cheaper than WH Smith on the platforms lol
Cheaper than costa the last time I checked hahaha
Thanks for the wonderful video. Looks like this and many other similar videos are going to be the closest we and our fellow coach travellers get to visit Scotland this year. We have just had the final of 3 tours cancelled due to hotel in Dornoch cancelling the September booking. We expected the May and July tours to be cancelled due to covid but the September one was not expected when it seemed the hotel was retaking bookings.
Glad you enjoyed! I hope you're able to take your trip up to the Highlands soon.
You pointed out every reason i refuse to travel on scotrail. They are the worst train company iv ever used. The trains are constantly overcrowded, anti-social behaviour is worse than a bar on a friday night and the staff do nothing to stop it, the legroom is next to none, the toilets are disgusting and half the time theres no loo roll, the seats and floor are almost always dirty or sticky and the tickets are massively overpriced. I can't remember the last time i used the train. If i want to travel between inverness and the south i always use the megabus. much cleaner, quieter and cheaper.
Try TFW man. My friend says that‘s even worse
It's a great honour to be 'like' number 700 Dylan! Great video as always and some superb shots of the wonderful Highland scenery. I guess the people behind you were a wee bit 'demob-happy' at the start of their weekend. If they were being seriously annoying and disruptive, you could have politely asked them to tone it down a wee bit. If you then received a negative response, you could have discreetly complained to the conductor...... but that's us Scots for you. We always enjoy a good party on a long journey!!!
Thanks! It personally doesn't bother me too much but I think most people maybe would be.
I've done this journey before (about 2 years ago) and I must say I had a similar experience to you. With great scenery, good staff but with unsuitable seats and rude passagers. I thought I just went on a bad day. But thankyou for another trip report
Unfortunately, anti-social behaviour is common place on this route. That said, the scenery does make up for it.
I travel regularly on this and i have had obnoxious passengers before but most of the time i find it on later trains and weekends. Recently they banned alcohol on them and im all for it, it has improved later trains.
I dont like traveling on the turbo star on long journeys, especially if its busy.
In the past, in that situation I'd go stand in a vestibule, open the window, listen to the diesel, maybe have a ciggy. Can't do any of those now. Not that many people would want those things but for me it's kinda put me off. Nice memories though.
This is great, once again.
I love how all of your videos are just nothing but trains. Nothing in between. Just pure journeys and reviews.
Thanks 😁
I completely agree with your report on the Class 170 from Inverness to Glasgow. I did that run several years ago when National Express were running the Scotrail franchise. These units are most unsuitable for such a long journey, and the refurbished Inter 7 City HSTs are excellent ! I have travelled on them, but only from Glasgow to Stirling, and look forward to your review on a longer route.
Thanks Dylan, I am from India and I like trains and I have never been to these places.Your videos make me want to go this places in these trains immediately. Thanks 4 the videos
You're welcome 😁
Maybe you could do something similar with Indian rail journeys
I generally found Turbostars pretty comfortable even on long distance routes, with a good view. I am 6ft. However if you've got annoying fellow passengers for the whole journey that really dampens the experience ...
Fair assessment. Sadly, the Glasgow/Inverness service ceased to be an Intercity Service in any true sense many years ago.
Ah well now it's a reality with the HSTS now.
last year on a train service some teenagers were playing music really really loud - whole carriage could hear it clearly, after a while I went up to them and said "turn the music down" - there response was "this is a public place nothing you can do about it" , I said "it's not a public place, turn it off or i'll notify the next station and have the police meet the train" , they laughed and said "as if they'll do that".
At which point a moment true serendipity.....
A bloke appeared behind me waived his BTP warrant and shouted "turn the music off now or i'll throw you off the train at the next station, another word from you and I will arrest you"
Bet they wound their necks in then 😂
If only... I need a personal BTP officer!
@@moose_ringo9161 I used to know their Chief Constable, I could have a word :-)
I've ridden Cross Country 170s before which are pretty similar in experience. (I sat at one of the table seats since I was traveling with family.)
There weren't any disruptive passengers thankfully.
The view meshed well with the music! Thanks. Reminds me of my first trip through the Highlands via a tour van. That was fun. Sorry about the leg room problem.
The Victorians really knew how to build a station roof 🙂
I agree! I guess their best builds are St Pancras and Paddington.
SO 😅
I also can't bare antisocial people talking loudly as the end of days, but you chose the music very well!
Pour cette vidéo si il y avait des étoiles à donner ce serait le maximum autant les paysages sont époustouflants en plus la musique que tu as incorporé avec en période de confinement une escapade bien accueillie un grand merci continue à nous faire voyager et rêver
Merci!
Kinda sad that Bombardier is slowly collapsing. These trains are just about at the end of their service life in terms of how long most train units globally retire from service. Great video by the way!
Thanks!
Great report Dylan on an area I know well, being a rail nerd. The anti-social thing really grinds my gears - I've told people to shut up in the past!!
Thanks!
just put your pistol in there face they will shut up very quick
I once had someone in my carriage reading a book aloud to himself all the way from Cambridge to London. I had frayed hair by the time I got there...
Sargent Law we don't have American law in the UK, and people like you are exactly why.
@@aidenstanley7305 well you should have stanley .
Dylan: Great edit work!! I enjoyed the video!!
Second: I would suggest you complain to ScotRail Customer services about the anti-social people behind you. I think they knew what you are doing and went all out to ruin your video.
But, I must say, you went flat out and did an excellent job of recording over their nasty anti-social work! It's their loss because you just made your video much more AWESOME!!
Third: i loved the ride and the views of Scotland. It made me feel much of my home in the mountains.
Over all A++ work!! Keep it up!
Thanks a lot 😁
Hi Dylan! Another great, honest and informative Travel Report! I'm sorry that this wasn't one of the best trips you've taken but you wouldn't be the expert Travel Reporter that you are if you only experienced fantastic journeys 🙂 Always excited for your Friday videos Dylan. I look forward to next Friday! Have a great weekend ahead!
Thanks! You too.
Funnily enough ScotRail themselves agree with alot of the points you raised.
The reason seating reservations weren't available on your train is because ScotRail where, throughout 2019 and early 2020, phasing out 170s on their long distance intercity routes in favour of the longer, more comfortable and more 'intercity' suitable HST sets.
The HSTs have a different seating layout to the 170s, and ScotRail hadnt yet recieved enough HSTs to replace 170s on every service so the reservations often didn't match the seating layout as you could end up with either type of train. Consequently seating reservations where just cancelled until enough HSTs where in servicr that you could be fairly confident an intercity train would be an HST.
Like SNP a total clusterfuck that's scotrail
@@kayleegreen2134 Actually, ScotRail are one of the fastest improving and best performing TOCs in the UK according to the NPRS 2020 (I know, I'm currently undertaking a course in railway operations management through the Institution of Railway Operators and had to write an essay on exactly that subject just a couple of months ago).
But I suppose, quite like the SNP, despite being one of the best performing of their kind in the country they're not perfect and are in the unfortunate position were every little fault will be picked apart and scrutinised by those with a political agenda to push.

Sorry you had a disappointing experience. Nice you were able to deliver a refreshing glimpse of snow and ice in July!
@TheRenaissanceman65 yes, I know he's showing old trips - that's why there was still snow ... and we are watching it in hot July.
Great report as always. Sorry you had to tolerate rudeness from nearby passengers. Good music choice for covering up their loud blathering. Gorgeous scenery!
Thanks!
Nice report and an honest review. I did the same journey back in February after my Caledonian Sleeper was cancelled due to Storm Ciara; but in my case the Turbostar was heading to Edinburgh, so I bailed at Perth and caught an Inter7City HST coming from Aberdeen to Glasgow.
Thanks! Sorry about your CS experience. It's always a shame when that happens.
A Turbostar doing a 3hr intercity service? They're barely adequate for the 50 min Edinburgh to Glasgow shuttles, FML. Keep up the good work Dylan.
Jason O usually the HST’S do them!
@@ramsay1725 That is a recent thing. Glasgow/Edinburgh-Inverness and Glasgow/Edinburgh-Aberdeen have been operated by Class 170s for about 15 years. Until Scotrail got the pensioned-off HSTs the only HST-operated services were Inverness-London and Aberdeen-London/Leeds. I know it's hard to believe but it used to be worse. Before the 170s arrived the services were "handled" by Class 158s.
Dave Barclay class 158s are way better than class 170s though
@@scottishtransportvideos264 They are my favorite DMUs

Thank you, Dylan! I loved. Despite the fact that you have traveled badly, I enormously loved, adored, the landscapes of the North of Scotland, of Perth, of the North whatever you showed us. It is absolutely magnificent. This is exactly what I like. I would love to live there. Thank you for everything.
Thanks! Don't worry, this was filmed before lockdown.
These videos are easing my need to travel - thanks Dylan!
You're welcome 😁
Thx this is the nicest journey I’ve seen an I like the music too
Glad you enjoyed!
I thought the music worked well actually. Good choice which worked nicely with the visuals. Great video!
Thanks!
Very nice report. Lovely scenery, music was ok. Thank you for putting it in the video to mask the rude passengers
Thanks!
The hand gesture at 2:51 is absolutely priceless!
😂
Another brilliant travel report Dylan. I had forgot how beautiful the scenery is in Scotland. I love Queen Street Station and well to be fair Central is rather grand too. Keep safe and take care.
Thanks! Take care!
A few times up here in Scotland a 3 coach Turbostar has been swapped out for a little 2 coach sprinter between Aberdeen and Glasgow in rush hour, now I'd call that hell on earth if I hadn't experienced Pacers during wet rush hours around Manchester and Leeds. The Turbostars are better suited to commuter lines such as the Borders line than the 160-mile Highland line though.
The perfect music choice! Worked so well. Inspired. Maybe you might like to put that in your videos more often, noisy fellow travellers or not?
I think I, personally, still prefer natural sounds but I'm happy with how ot turned out 😁
@@DylansTravelReports Well, it's your video, but I thought that in the context of an extended scenic interlude between stations it works. I'm not saying throughout the whole video. I do hope the travel companies take these travel reports that you and others do seriously. Do they? Keep up the good work!
You get a mixture of stock on the long distance runs at the moment, which is why they don’t do reservations. I’ll take a Turbostar every time compared to the class 158 express sprinters they also use which have even less legroom and whose seats are an instrument of torture. Incidentally they have a mix of Turbostars, some have had the first class removed. Ironically on the local Fife services with no first class we often get the first class equipped units.
Those seats looked dreadful. If ever there were a justification for a first class ticket-and there’s no first class! Thanks for another great report Dylan.
Thanks!
I don't know why you felt compelled to apologize for covering the video with music. In some ways, I think it serendipitous for your viewers, although certainly not for you listening to the obnoxious passengers at the time, but I think the music added to the viewing experience.
Gorgeous views out there !!! :) BTW, love your choice of music.
Thanks 😁
I've travelled this route by 170 and HST and I have to say that to enjoy the scenery the 170 is the better train. I am over 6ft tall and find the legroom more than adequate, certainly way ahead of the 158s. I think that the 170s do a good job in Scotland. The seats are well shaped and comfortable, far better than Voyagers and the like. My only criticism is that demand outstrips supply on this route. One 3 car set is often inadequate. The last time I travelled down from Inverness on one several cyclists were denied travel after Aviemore. But will we see the converted 155s here? Probably not if HSTs become the norm.
i really cant believe that anyone would think a 170 was better then the HST. The HST has never been surpassed in terms of comfort in this country and to think a plastic box with a vibrating floor is better is somewhat strange. I would not travel on that thing for a 3 hr journey and would make sure it was a HST set
I would agree that the original HST with its original seats was a fabulously comfortable train to travel in but my point is that refurbished ones with the high-backed seats do not offer the same legroom or unimpeded views.
One 3 car set is totally inadequate for a lot of the northern Turbostar routes, to be honest. On one day trip from Perth-Edinburgh and back I had an awesome I7C HST on the morning trip down, very busy but still enough seats for all, and on the way back from Edinburgh Gateway (This was in Feb mind you when there was probably plague going around) I was nose to nose with a whole lot of people in the vestibule of a 170 as far as Inverkeithing before getting the vestibule jumpseat. They're awful in terms of capacity. As on my local lines in Rhoose/Barry, it's just not right for late joining passengers to be treated as second class by being crammed in like Japanese metros or refused travel. What did they do wrong?
The 170 is better, it is way more comfortable, way faster on acceleration, and very warm when it's cold outside, any also, HSTs break down like crazy, there is only a few 170 units that break down alot
@@esthermckenna3149 we just desperately need more capacity. More, and larger, DEMU/EMUs will do. This is why I'm a FLIRT fan; it seems to have options to solve most problems.
Great trip report again! The scenery is just breathtaking! I've visited Scotland 3 years ago and it was definitely one of my most memorable holidays ever! Sorry for the terrible passengers you had to endure. I've read on your instagram stories that finally someone stood up against them? How did that end?
Thanks! They did pipe down a bit once confronted albeit very reluctantly.
I've done a jourrney from Edinburgh to Blair Atholl with the same type of stock around a few years ago. It personally wasn't too bad, i was in a large group and we had reserved seats for the journey. When we got on the train there was apparently no reserved seats whatsoever and it was just a nightmare and the train was also only three carriages long.
It was even worse around 6 days later when we went to do the return journey back to Edinburgh. We had to take a coach to Perth because there were some unexpected delays (due to some event going on). Of course we were lucky enough to get seats onboard the train as it was much longer!
But overall it wasn't a great experience to say the least.
I've been on Turbostars many times to and from Aberdeen. The oldest seats on a turbostar had a leather bit for your head. The tables are better for comfort on a turbostar, as I was on a couple of years ago travelling from Inverurie to Inverness. Since Abellio took over, no trains have reserved seating.
Hey Dylan. Shout out from green bay wi. I'm a new subscriber. I find your channel relaxing. Ty
Thanks 😁
I get Northern Class 170 between Leeds and Burley Park for my commute to and from work when the weather doesn’t allow for me to walk in. I don’t mind the Turbostars, but it’d only just make the top 5 trains I use for work along with Class 333, 331, 322 and 195 in no particular order.
I think the defining factor about the shoddy trains is because Scotrail and Network Rail just assume there's no use in electrifying the lines north of Edinburgh, as it's so sparsely populated this far north. And really, they're shooting themselves and us in the foot, as the tourists coming to see Loch Ness have to fly into an airport (with minimal European links) then take a half hour or so bus ride into Inverness. But getting electrified lines between Here, Aberdeen and/or Glasgow would drastically improve conditions and speed things up tenfold
The worst part about the airport buses is that the timetable often doesn't coincide with the arrival time of flights.
When I travel on any train I like to face the direction the train is going
Same
Facing the way you have been has a small advantage if the train is rapidly brought to a halt. You are pressed into your seat rather than thrown out of it.
Same
Very nice video, music great, like you pointed out cl170 turbo's for long distances ain't great, bnst-stansted airport, via Leicester, xc trains, Nottingham - Cardiff Central which are 3 hours +, we had them on the midland main line, cl170's on Sheffield/derby/Nottingham /Leicester, two car units.
Thanks 😁
Such a shame about the rude people behind you - I would have had to move even if it meant standing. Train operators should take this seriously as it can drive people off trains and back into their cars (once the pandemic has ended of course).
Great report as usual & I liked the music.
Thanks 😁
Nice to see this video on my birthday... :)
Although I do feel bad for you taking that train, must be rough there...
Happy birthday!
Dylan's Travel Reports thank you!
I saw this unit pass Broughty Ferry last week on an Aberdeen to Edinburgh service. Looked and sounded well.
A fair report. As for selling 1st class tickets when no first class seating is available, I’ve experienced this myself on a few occasions. It is unacceptable but the operating company (Abellio) doesn’t seem to care. When they were chosen to replace First to run ScotRail, the SNP Government trumpeted the lower costs & promised better service. The reality is that it may be cheaper but it’s far too often shoddy. My usual route is Nairn/Inverness/Perth/Broughty Ferry & reverse, used to require 2 changes until Abellio changed it a year so ago, now three changes. The equipment can sometimes be quite good, other times abysmal. That’s why I quite often drive when it’s not the depth of winter 😉. PS/ Quite often recently (6 or so months pre-lockdown) there was no trolley service at all on the lengthy Inverness/Perth/Glasgow sections, although as mentioned earlier I generally get off at Perth, staff shortages it was said, but it seemed almost as if trolley service was off regularly.
Yes, similar issues with the trolley service on the far north line. I take that route quite often and they wheel out the staff shortages excuse. Fortunately, if you board at Inverness, the guard will come round and make people aware so that you can quickly nip to WH Smith before setting off.
I always think of Scotland as a minimalist society, not ostentatious, which is reflected in this train. But at least the windows were clean so you could film the beautiful scenery. And I also liked your choice of music.
Honestly I prefer these class 170s over the mk4 carriages you get in the HSTs, unless you go for 1st class. Mind you I'm a short guy at 5" 7, so the legroom doesn't bother me. Plus, the 170s sound amazing imo. Especially when you reach high speeds and you hear the torque converter lock up. Never gets old.
The first piece of music was very fitting with the scenery
HEAVENLY scenery, thank you!
Great video, keep them up, by the way if you have ever been there, what do you think of Ayr (thinking of visiting)
Thanks! Never been to Ayr.
I have to say that anti-social behaviour is quite common these days, especially with the young. Many seem to have no social graces or respect for others about them. If it is not a 'Quiet Coach' then I don't think it is the train staff's job to sort out what years of parenting and schooling has not!
The train staff doubtless have enough cr*p to put up with on a daily basis as it is, without going looking for a fight which these incidents can easily escalate into...... If the other passengers won't get together and stand up and let them know their behaviour is not acceptable then i'm afraid you just have to put up with it, as most people do (as annoying as that is ... ) I have experienced it myself so many times on trains from London to Peterborough, but getting into a heated bust up with people these days is just not worth the hassle.
I just add it to the list of many things that hack me off about train travel, top of the list which is people jumping on late night trains despite not having a ticket because they know there will be no inspectors on the train, and open passenger barriers at the station they get off at.
Years ago I was on a " Quiet coach " with Virgin trains. heading to Stoke. Was minding my own business when 3 Stuffed suites decided to have a loud conversation while smashing the hell out of the keys on the oversized laptops. so I put on my headphones to listen to some music while killing the time and they bitched about me to the attendant. It wasnt even loud or thrash just the mid range pop rock and soft club. sat at around 75% vol.
Not been on any scottrail services as im in GTR Manchester. Northern are ok if you dont mind the shoddy service and Diesel donkeys. Ive noticed that unless its a " premium " brand the staff just dont give a damn.

Thanks! I'll be filming more sleeper videos very soon 😁
You complaint that Scotrail should do more about Anti-social behaviour, what do you suggest they do? As they are not the police. Did you text the BTP or report the passengers being anti social behaviour?
Scotrail have the right to ask them to stop and, if they don't, they can kick them off and/or call the police. I didn't really think of calling the BTP at the time.
@@DylansTravelReports I didn't mean it to sound like i was having ago, I just think its difficult for the staff on the train as they are usually on their own. Its not easy to confront a group of often drunk individuals, but i do understand your point. I have used the BTP text service a few times, and found them to be very good and discreet when replying. Just a suggestion that may help in the future. Keep up the great vids tho👍
I'd like to see Dylan do a review of what is actually one of my local main lines, of the c2c line from Shoeburyness to London Fenchurch Street, it will be interesting to see seen as they operate almost entirely Class 357's, which are very similar to the 170's in design but more modern and updated (I believe, it's been a good few months since I last travelled with them). They also operate some services with Class 387's, so it will be interesting to see this line in action, particularly as I know it so well!
I very much enjoyed the cultural music, i suggest the whole video with it if theres no speaking. I like your review of the train as a whole (seats, restrooms, history). My favorite part is seeing the beautifully changing landscape throughout the train ride. Just amazing!

Please don't apologize for the necessary use of music. Thanks for thinking of us while you had to deal with such ugly behavior, for which I'm sorry
I rather liked the music...seemed fitting for your journey thru Scotland! It was kind of cramped like airline seats wasn't it? I think many people are afraid to complain about rude behavior in fear of repercussions, at least that's the way it is here in the USA, there has been a few incidents about mask wearing even...
Thanks!
People are so belligerent here in the USA especially about a wearing a mask during a pandemic. It seems that in these train videos some people wear them and others don't. In my state it's required in all public places.
Great content as usual. The whole anti social thing is symptomatic of the selfish lack of respect society we now live in.I think many people will agree.
Thanks!
I'm sorry you had some disruptive neighbors, Dylan, but it didn't harm the quality of your video. I haven't ridden this train; only the LNER, Virgin and the Caledonian Sleeper between Edinburgh, York and London. I was in Scotland in May of 2019 and, unfortunately, I was under the weather while there. It was stunning though and I'd like to venture back one day. Would love to see Inverness and Glasgow.
I concur with others -- your videos are helping to ease the travel restrictions and inability to go to Europe.

Thanks! Sorry you were ill while in Scotland! See ya next Friday!

Nice one. These trains are okay for the short hop from Edinburgh to Glasgow but definitely not comfortable for longer journeys. Not as nasty as the Class 158 though. Most of them have first class - you were unlucky to get one without first class.
Loving the videos mate!
Thanks 😁
Loving all the semi-local content!
Great video Dylan. Well not that bad on the 170s actually but you don't like the legroom cause is not have enough space and yes, I agree with that. Also the seats were nearly hard to sit on as well 😂😂.
Can you do a journey on the GWR 387s from Newbury to London Paddington via Reading pls.
Thanks! Maybe some day.
You're probably too young to remember this, Dylan, but from 1988 to 2001, most internal Scottish services were operated by 2-car class 156 or 158 sprinter units. It took quite a while before they had enough stock for 4-car trains, even on the Edinburgh - Falkirk High - Glasgow Queen Street services; and by the time the occasional 4-car unit made it to Aberdeen and Inverness, it wasn't necessarily on what were known to be the busier services! So, it was and still could be a lot worse in terms of discomfort and overcrowding - believe me, when the class 170 turbos came into use they felt quite luxurious by comparison! Admittedly, they've been feeling decidedly tired for a long while now; largely due to overuse. That's the down side of fixed formation trains. I've yet to go anywhere on a ScotRail HST set, but somehow don't feel that even they'll be as comfortable as the Class 26/7 and later, class 47 loco-hauled Mk 2 rakes of anything up to 11 vehicles that used to run between Glasgow/Edinburgh and Inverness - albeit only about 7 times a day at irregular intervals - supplemented by the Sleeper service from the two cities to and from the north - the portions of which would unite or divide at Perth - where the entire consist would sit for around two and a half hours amidst the banging and rattling of mail, parcels and newspapers being loaded/unloaded, and ferried around the station in their own little trains of BRUTE trolleys; before eventually departing and calling at the almost pitch dark platforms of some of the smaller stations that at best, were illuminated by only one or two 150w bulbs located where the ice tended to be at its blackest, and most unexpected.... Okay - the turbos don't have all that romance, either!!
Love the shots of Aviemore. Beautiful
Actually i was planning to make a trip report on this route in August... but you know, corona....
Nice vid.
That's a shame especially as the Scottish government is still saying trains should be used for necessary journeys only. At least it should be a HST operating the route by the time you do it 😁
As someone who lived in Scotland for many years the turbostars are truly awful and a place where hope goes to die. They might not seem too bad but when it's rush hour in winter I can guarantee you'll hate these awful trains as much as I do. I'm glad Scotrail has finally replaced them on intercity services and the turbostars are an improvement over the old commuter stock they had. Still I'm glad I now live in London where the turbostars are a thing of the past on my commute
:( My favourite trains don't deserve this hate
Yeah I agree. I sure won't miss them!
Leaving from Glasgow returns are much cheaper if you book 9 weeks in advance. Also if you get returns Glasgow to Perth then Perth to Inverness it’s over £10 cheaper can’t remember exactly. A rail worker whose from Inverness told me a few years back there’s a £5 ticket but only a few and she got one for a relative. The bus takes exactly the same time as the train around 3 hours 15 minutes and it’s possible if booked in advance to get a £1 bus ticket.
last time i did inverness to glasgow it was loco hauled, comfortable seats that line up with the window, not to mention the engine noise free coach.
I actually like hearing what the engine is doing
Lovely scenery anyway- thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I've been on these trains a couple of times, the first was from Edinburgh to Glasgow before the 385s arrived and they were actually quite good!
The second time was from Edinburgh to Inverness, which was a 4 hour journey. That was horrible.
Moral of the story:
Turbostars shouldn't run on long intercity routes!
I agree!
@Martin Przytulski if its the shorter Cross Country services from Birmingham, they are good for the job, but you wouldn't put them on Leeds to Plymouth services, for example. I often (pre-lockdown) travelled from South Wales up to Birmingham on them; I enjoy travelling on them and they do a good job on that route, but more than a couple of hours journey on them would be pushing it a bit for me
I can't believe it but you finally found a train I wouldn't want to travel on LOL sorry that you had to...
Yeah, I can't say taking a Turbostar is advisable 😅
I loathe airline style seats. It's bad enough having to endure them on planes, which, thankfully doesn''t happen so often, but trains have no excuse. When you can remember well padded seats in the compartments with a side corridor the current squalid set up is just NOT GOOD ENOUGH
This is the reason why the HSTs are coming soon for the franchise, which will make glasgow-Inverness much nicer
I spent a full Manchester - Glasgow trip in the wheelchair seats on the class
350 this is first class to that seat lmao
It's Friday afternoon syndrome - people going out, drinking either on the train or before they get on the train and then just generally pissing off everyone else who isn't doing the same as them. I avoid travelling to Liverpool or Manchester (my nearest cities) on Fri/Sat afternoon for the same reason.
The worst train trips are Amtrak from Portland to Seattle when there's a Mariner's game happening. People bring their own alcohol (illegal, but impossible to enforce) and get very very drunk. The last time I rode coach before a baseball game, there were drunk guys who didn't even bother to close the bathroom door before they started peeing. So now when I'm in business class and I hear the announcement, "We will not be serving any more alcohol", I am *extremely* happy I'm not back there, especially when the train arrives in Seattle and I see people staggering to Safeco Field (now T-Mobile Field). Ugh!
6:02 Really beautiful, I only wonder how it looks like seeing the train pass on the outside.
Great video and I loved the music.
Glad you enjoyed it
Very pretty country for such a short trip and low price and a Friday just a bunch looking to party it up in Glasgow. Really think some or your trips across London were as long and relatively yob free :)
Very nice scenery; I think the train itself looked pretty good for a 19 year old train. The outside was clean and not banged up like North American trains. The seats are probably the original seats just redone a time or two; there are much better seats on the market today. Too bad about the noisy neighbours and I agree, take the HST ! i like the price comparisons between 1st and 2nd class, gives a good idea when the extra expense is worth it. Thanks Dylan.,
I usually travel on Turbostars from Dundee, I think they're good. When I was younger I thought 170's at Inverness were rare but obviously I'm 18 now so I know it's common.
Nice video keep up the good work
Thanks, will do!
Disruptive behaviour is common place on trains in Scotland. I always notice a massive difference when I travel down south!
170470 was originally a Strathclyde suburban unit hence the reason no first class. Sometimes due to mitigating circumstances these units are used out with the Glasgow area.
Quite often in my experience (maybe I just get unlucky 😅)
Great video, It’s obvious the quality of trip was decently appalling and it’s strange because Cross Country turbostars are the complete opposite and are lovely and I guess it’s due to the major refurbishment they’ve been given to make them great. Anyways for this route the HST is much more appreciated 😃
I can't say I agree about the Cross Country Turbostars. Legroom is worse than Ryanair imho.
@@DylansTravelReports Fair enough, cross country have removed those god awful tables and made the seats more acceptable although it’s the same case for me with the e300 where the seat is comfortable but the legroom is appalling
