  • On our railfan bucket list has been the Empire builder! We finally caught up with this iconic train in Leavenworth recently.
The Empire builder started as a Great Northern Railway train. The Great Northern was largely responsible for a lot of the early development in remote areas of the Pacific Northwest, including around Glacier National Park, which the Empire Builder travels through along the Marias Pass.
The Empire Builder travels between Chicago and Seattle/Portland. The train actually splits in Spokane with part of it going Southwest into Oregon and the other half goes West to the coast of Washington.
Leavenworth, WA was served by the Great Northern Railroad and its successors from the late 1800s up until the 1950s. A few specials or excursion trains still stopped here until 1991 after which all the passenger trains passed by without stopping. Leavenworth, and its touristy Bavarian Village, was interested in returning passenger service and raised funds to build what is now the Amtrak Icicle Station which was constructed in 2009. It features a pair of shelters for passengers with heaters to battle the winter as well as a small station house. The station is located on the BNSF's Scenic subdivision.
