Okay. This is definitely my FAVORITE video... I am sitting here by myself and laughing so hard I cried at Fancy in the snow (around 10:30 on the video)! Absolute JOY to see Fancy glissade. 🤣🤣🤣 And she is clearly overjoyed, as well. It’s so wonderful to see how well you are taking care of her. It’s also so great to see your mom on the trail with you. Tell your mom that she inspires me and she ROCKS! I am almost 60 and I also have a terrific relationship with my adult daughter and I can just imagine being out on the trail with her and adventuring together. We are looking forward to climbing Mt. Whitney together in September 2019!
Our black dog, Tucker with white socks strikes so much like Fancy. My wife Kathy sectioned hiked with him on the VA section SB. it was so hot and dry, i picked him up at Devils Backbone in Nelleysford. Thick black fur is not likable to 90+ and no rain or water. He hence stayed with me on resupplies walking in 10 miles and back out. A complete companion outside of my wife. He may Kathy's completion of the VA at one of the best hiking endeavors in my life.I did pick up a water jacket to keep his body temp down. It came highly recommended by SARS.
When you take a dog on any sort of trip, it becomes about the dog. I always think about this when I take the dog camping or on a road trip, or wherever I go (not a backpacker). Good video, as ever Dixie. Love your mom too.
Dogs can triangulate where a scent came from, by the cone that's created, similar to how we can tell which direction a sound comes from. They can also tell time by how long a scent has degraded. There's a lot of complex things going on with dogs that we're oblivious to.
Fancy Mae is in her element having the time of her life being with her humans 24/7, adventuring and conditioning. Your Mom is a trooper and seems to also be having fun with you.
Hey Dixie! This is my first post on your channel. I discovered your channel about two months ago! I absolutely love it! I've watched all your videos on the PCT. So my wife and I who are from Arizona were spending our 34th wedding anniversary at Mount Laguna Lodge and campground and realized we were only about three blocks away from the PCT! We were so excited and walked on the PCT for an hour or so with our dog Sammy! Since we live so close to the Pacific Crest trail we are going to start a section hike this spring from Campo to Mount Laguna Lodge! Approximately 43 miles! You've given us so much motivation and confidence and we are currently accumulating gear! Thank you so much for everything!

I was once bike camping in British Columbia and cooking on a whisperlite on a camp table. The water pot tipped like that and the boiling water landed in my lap. I got a wonderful tour of the Canadian emergency room system and bandages that held up really well - I biked the last 20 miles of the trip, rode the ferry back, and made it all the way home without a single blister popping. That was around 1992 or 1993. My tour buddy said my scream was one of those sounds that makes all the little woodland creatures stop what they're doing and look around. Many thanks to the Canadian park ranger and the doctor who patched me up!

Life is definitely different when you get up and get out of the house. Last year I took on a 62 mile continues walk for charity, since then I've walked a few events and trained in different places in England, the views can be incredible. Hi Dixie my oldest son who is 15 came up to me and had interest in backpacking. My youngest son who is 13 also decided that he wanted to backpack as well. I came across your channel and your FB page. And we just enjoyed your story and the knowledge that you share with us. I've been waiting for the day that my boys came to me and showed interest in backpacking. You have inspired me to to get out and share my knowledge to my boys about backpacking and just being outdoors. We are from Keizer Oregon and when I found out that your going to be finishing you steps of the PCT in our area that had me thinking how cool it would be to cross paths. I am a dog fancier myself, so I can't help but marvel at what a gem FM is. To see her take her treats so sweetly, wait patiently, listen, endure the indignities with equanimity, stay with you even in the few instances when you were not holding the leash, etc. So much fun to watch!

Dixie As a person who ran my huskies - and they all ( 12 at a time ) lived in the house - in a dog team, thank you for checking paws. Sometimes ice has shards that will cut pads so be alert. LOVE your videos , been watching for years. I now love backpacking.
We have a 14 pound Havanesse who’s hiked many Alaska trails going 20 miles in and out the same day many times...of course we’d carry him over boulder fields (Reeds Lakes Trail, Symphony Trail) but he’s born and grown up in the AK mountains. I think it’s great you took your dog to experience this adventure. I’m from North Idaho and we always took our dogs on ALL day hikes. It just doesn’t seem the same unless they are along for the hike.
