HeartCry is literally the only missionary society I know of that I would take financial advice from.

The point of economics is to build virtue. We work for wages based on the time we put in. The scriptures teach that “our time is in His hands.”

Praise God. Thank you very very much brother Adam for teaching me how to see Lord’s blessings for me in my life. Your teaching is so rich and deep and holy! Hallelujah. I thank God and I praise God for raising you and teaching you and keeping you faithful to Him and His truth and His words so that rivers of life and truth emerged from your being and your teachings! Hallelujah.
For 5 years, I have been asking Lord how shall I steward His blessings in my life for His Kingdom, and His Purposes. Lord has answered through you, brother Adam. Thank You Lord for using brother Adam mightily for Your Glory! Soli Deo Gloria.

Thank you so much for this, Adam! Stewarding my finances biblically is one of my most frustrating challenges of being a newer Christian. I have two questions about the tithe. Question 1. Is the base goal (10% of income), should that be based off of gross income? I feel like it should be based off of gross (I'm currently only able to do net) but I would love to build to gross. Question 2. Is the tithe strictly for the Church and then giving to other Christian organizations what the Law calls "fellowship offerings"? Or is it interchangeable?

@GrooveBoots Yes, I would also. I give to Christian groups and an online church or two I watch but wasn’t going to a local church, ( couldn’t find one) and now that I have moved and started at a local church several weeks ago I’m not sure how to readjust everything.

Q1: The Bible does not say whether one should tithe from their gross or net income. The Old Testament teaches the principle of firstfruits (Exodus 23:16; 34:22; Leviticus 2:12-14; 2 Chronicles 31:5). When we come to the New Testament, believers in Christ are not commanded to give a tithe per se. However, we read, "Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver" (II Corinthians 9:7). As I mentioned in the lecture, I believe in the principle of grace giving.
When we think about giving under the New Covenant, I believe it is best to think of the tithe being the starting point and not the end goal. We find the 10% offering clearly taught in the Old Testament. We see examples of the New Testament church giving generously. We find Jesus teaching us to look to the heart of the Law and not just the letter of it. So, we must be careful not to mandate a tithe, but we must also be willing to give sacrificially and generously. Starting at 10% in our giving seems to be a wise position to take in light of the biblical evidence.
Q2: See answer number one on tithing.
We must understand that Jesus fulfilled the law of the tithe and every other offering codified in the law. Paul reminds us of this in I Corinthians 15:20, “But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.” Jesus was and is our firstfruits offering. We are not obligated to do that anymore. I believe what you are asking is if you should give your offering primarily to the church or if can you spread it out to other ministries. If this is what you are asking then let me answer it this way. We cannot make the claim that everything we give must go to our local church, but I do believe that we should be giving a large portion of our offerings to our local church for the ministries of the church. If we believe that our church is biblical, we should support it with our time, talent, and treasure. It would be my suggestion to give no less than 10% of your gross income to your local church to support your pastor(s), building maintenance, and Great Commission endeavors. On top of this, I would encourage you to pray about setting aside a portion of your income to give to other faithful ministries as the Lord prospers you.
I hope this helps to answer your questions.
