I’m British and had no idea any of this had happened! How can you oppose someone marrying and twice divorced foreigner, but normalise marrying a cousins 😬?! He would’ve had a lot on his mind when he crashed, poor soul.
The cousin marriages were allowed because it those cousins were also royals and it was preferred for royals to other marry royals until the early 1900s when king George V the grandfather of Queen Elizabeth announced that British royals would be allowed to marry respectable commoners, that’s why Queen Elizabeth ii ‘s Mother was a commoner and not a royal at all so she was not related to her husband George VI at all

i think it’s sweet that Prince Charles named his son in honor of his late cousin, but it definitely had an inadvertent effect of overshadowing Prince William and his legacy to some extent. obviously this isn’t true for everybody but most Americans are somewhat familiar with the royal family and it’s history. it seems like Prince William kind of slipped through the cracks simply because most people identify the name and title of “Prince William” with Diana and Charles’ son, and not his cousin. i wasn’t aware that he ever existed or the tragic love story that he took part in and i assume some of that is due to the confusion that having the same name can bring. but who really knows! it’s just an assumption on my part.

It was a tragic love story but I understand it. The reality is she had found the love of her life and he happened to be royalty, all things being considered, had she gone on to date other people she would have been comparing them to him. 😢
