GRIM tour of former Tesco Market Hall car park Chatham

  • I take a detailed walk around the Market Hall car park in Chatham. Several levels, 3, 4, 5 and 6 have been closed off partly due to anti social behavior but mostly from a decline in use. Things really haven't changed and Chatham is still in decline with many larger chains leaving. Tesco, Market Hall and the Multi Storey car park were built between 1980 and 1982 and opened later in 1982. Market Hall used to have 'Market' style shops and stalls for local traders but started to decline in the 2000s. It is now a home furnishing store. Tesco closed in 2015 and in 2016, Go Outdoors took over the former Tesco store. The multi storey car park is now under the control of Medway Council.
All the areas I visited are freely accessible to the public and shows the social deprivation in this town. Will things ever change?

“Go Outdoors” isn’t just The name of the establishment; it’s an instruction for the denizens of the stairwell to pee outside.

The fire alarm here is strange. It used to be a kentec syncro when it was tesco (before this it was possibly an old chloride gent system with all bells, as there used to be one or 2 'chloride gent' MCP's and my nan remembers there being all bells, up and down the car park). In about 2014, most of the bells, sounders and MCP's had gotten vandalised over time, they obviously replaced some stuff when they broke with banshees or roshnis (the majority of bells are still up and a few are missing their covers). There were no detectors anywhere in public sight, they used the sprinkler flow valves instead. In the store there were white roshnis and in the car park there were bells and banshees. Now I think some of the old stuff is still in use but the fire alarm in the car park comes through those PA horn speakers. The panels a kentec sigma, and in the shop the detection/sounders are strange chinese things. EDIT: that booth was from when it used to have an attendant.

It's strange that they replaced the fire alarm with a conventional panel from an addressable considering the size of the place. I doubt anything in the car park works although the lift shafts do still have detectors. I haven't had a good look around inside the Go Outdoors store because they pounce on you the moment you step in. One thing they do is hound you to sign up for a Go Outdoors membership or you have to pay the extortionate higher price. The other is you get followed around by a security guard - which is no surprise with it being Chatham! The sprinkler room has always fascinated me with the gong bells above the doors. They actually have a diesel generator too which is the door to the left of the sprinkler room. Thanks for the all the additional details and on that booth. You know a lot about this place. The booth is probably a time capsule, I'm betting that it has been left exactly as it was and the shutters just closed when they decided to close it but who knows...

Yeah. I come from around the area. My nan worked here in the late 80s till the early 90s, and my mum and aunt in the late 90s.

    • @battytec

Also, another thing I forgot to mention, the doors by those old sprinkler bells used to be glass, and through one, had the red handrail from the car park. Its a mystery what go outdoors have done, as they have wasted a hell of a lot of space.

I remember that tesco opening in 82 and it was buzzing in the day and all six floors of that car park were busy. The store itself had 32 checkouts and was very busy in the early 80,s. Gradually over time it got quieter and quieter. I went in about a year before it closed down and the checkout line had been reduced to 14 and there was only one till open. I bet tesco didn't foresee that happening to a store that size.

Thanks for the video. A trip down memory lane for me as, although I now live just outside Tunbridge Wells, I spent the first 50 years of my life in the Medway Towns. I remember that end of Chatham High Street well. In the 1950s and 1960s there used to be the Regent and the Ritz cinemas and a small model shop called Lecore's where you could put a penny(?) in the slot and watch a train go around in the window (I've been a model railway enthusiast ever since). Always hated the architecture of the Tesco store and car park - a real blot on the landscape. Only once went into the car park as it always felt threatening with so many alleyways (smelly) and places one could easily be mugged. A great pity that it hasn't been demolished and replaced with something more pleasing to the eye. The 1970s saw some pretty dreadful architecture in Chatham (e.g. The Pentagon).

I shopped there a few times when it was a Tesco but it was never a very inviting store: underground with terrible lighting a weird old-fashioned vibe. I think decline was inevitable just as high street shopping has declined in general, but also because it usually involved passing through the most bleak car park I've ever known.

The car park floors have been fixed shut for a while. They must have seen my video. But they forgot to screw shut the restaurant level doors. Tesco used to be my local urbex. I went there every week. There is so much interesting stuff in there. Somehow they realised that there was someone going into the building, but they didn't have a clue how. They put up cameras everywhere around tesco and PIR sensors. This must have cost them a lot of money. Despite locking the car park levels, they must have forgot all about this as they had no idea that we were entering through the lifts. A few weeks ago me and Jordan were going around tesco and I didn't notice the cameras. Then we suddenly heard doors slamming upstairs on restaurant while we were in the shop level. I looked up to see the faint red glow of an IR camera. This must have been the scariest experience I have ever had while urbexing. We knew every corner of tesco and we worked out the way back to the lift to avoid whoever it was crashing about upstairs. Once back at the lift, I was so scared that my hands were shaking and I couldn't get my drop key to latch the lift to escape. We could hear the guy getting closer and closer. I managed to hit the latch just in time.
My friend Jordan is more risky than me. He wanted to play hide and seek with the guy in the building (even though we didn't know who it was). So Jordan went down to the secret levels and put the lift back into service so if he had to run from the guy he would escape through the fire exit and the lift wouldn't be left on inspection (a bad mistake). He was now trapped. We had never tried the fire exits as they were alarmed. Turns out they were all locked. Jordan was now trapped. He ran around the building for half an hour avoiding the guy who knew he was in there (because of the cameras) and was trying to catch him. One point the guy was standing right outside the toilet door where jordan was hiding. Then eventually Jordan ran into the guy. he had a massive guard dog. Jordan had no way out. He was running around tesco trying to phone me while the guy was chasing him. I drove a lift down to rescue him, and amazingly he managed to get out of there without being caught.

Many shopping centres etc built in early 1980s would have looked good in relation to 1970 and 1960s buildings..yet fast forward to 2019 these look very dated and messy it does not matter who the building occupier was ..tesco in this instance, once a building becomrs empty it soon falls into disrepairs. I would imaging for security and anti social behavour it was easier to seal up floors 3 to 6 with brick work gates and bars...yes the place looks in dire state and looks terribly dated now..i live in dublin and have seen many shopping centres of same kinda designs from 1982 onwards which have all gone through refits or simply pulled down and rebuilt... the funny thing though the new building which go up in say early to present 2000s are going to look kinda shite by 2050 if they have not fallen down or condemed because developers made short cuts in construction codes...where this building looks ugly it most like built to social bunker standards :) :) :)
