The black and white Jpegs out of this camera are beyond my wildest expectations
I haven’t tested them much, but I definitely should! I like shooting with the black and white profile but I still have them as raw
They’re amazing, dial in the settings and straight of camera you’d be super surprised
I've had mine almost a year, and I keep forgetting to try shooting in BW. I will start tomorrow!

Great overview Lukas! I just purchased a slightly used SL2 with adapter M to L, I already have my trusty M10-R and a few non Leica M lenses. Since I do not shoot video (anymore) I wanted an equivalent MP sensor for both cameras. SIGMA 35mm f2 DG DN Contemporary, has just arrived and currently testing it on the SL2, impressive so far.
Awesome! I love my SL2, I definitely didn’t give sigma a good chance with the 105 because macro lenses aren’t known for their quick focusing. But I want to compare some primes later this summer
Great unbiased review, my friend! The SL2-S is mon my “list” since it came out. I’m still using my Fuji X-H2s for videos, but I can see a world where I would use the same brand from film (M6) to digital M, Q and SL. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Fellow SL2S user here and great video!! Try the Voightlander VM lenses, they are amazing with it and also nowhere near the Leica M lens prices. Keep up the great vids.

Thanks Lukas, your SL2-S videos have really helped me get the most out of my camera. Quick question, you mentioned focus problems with the Sigma glass. I noticed that my only autofocus lenses (Sigma 35 DG DN 1.4 and 24-70) had occasional shutter lag. I thought it was the camera until I rented the 50 SL2 APO and it never happened. Were these the focus troubles you were encountering? Too bad if so, those are two great lenses.

What setting do you recommend for the autofocus when shooting moving people ( weddings ) I missed a lot of shots specially during ceremony but I didn't turn on the eye detection option. Thanks! The only " complain " I have is the autofocus for the type of work I do but I'm not sure if I'm just using the wrong settings. Thank you
I generally use manual focus mode and set it to point focusing then use the back button to focus, but if you don’t like back button focusing I would use the iAF mode

Purchased Leica SL2s w 24-70 2.8 kit last week. Agreed with you on both cost/AF but I wish it has a tilt screen (SL3). Always wanted a Leica and the M11 price is just crazy and I’m not really a manual focus kind of guy. Overall it is the image quality that I look for and the color science output is gorgeous. I’m thinking of getting Sigma 105/1.4 but your sigma lens experience on AF makes me think twice on the 105 1.4. I’m looking for a used 90-280 zoom but it maybe awhile since even use could cost as much as a new SL2s. I may just wait and get Q3 when it comes out later this year or early 2024.

Sigma and Leica made some updates about AF. I used Sigma lenses on others L mount bodies (Panasonic S1R and Sigma fp) and the AF of the lenses itself are fine. The Sigma i series are great, especially the 65mm, love this one, and fast enough AF for stills (I don’t do video), and I used it at night on the streets. 😉
The SL 2 or 2S are on my short list.
Awesome video! I recently borrowed an M10 and had a great time with it. I love absolutely EVERYTHING about the camera. The only thing that I must be honest with myself about is the moments I missed due to no AF. That’s my fault and I can’t blame the camera. With that said, the AF would be important from the sl2s. I know the size of the M10, can you tell me if the sl2s is similar in size to the M10? I do wear an XL glove size so honestly the M10 is a little tight on my hands. My biggest concern is if the sl2s is capable to be carried daily everywhere with me comfortably. I use a Peak Design Every carry 3L if that’s any help
The af for photos is absolutely usable, are there better systems for af, yeah but they aren’t the same experience. The sl2s is bigger than the m10! And it would fit especially with m lenses
@Detroiter I had the M10 and I must say that focusing M lenses on the SL2-S is considerably faster and easier than on the M10. The focus peaking and the magnification using the excellent viewfinder is much nicer than using the rangefinder, at least for someone like me with bad eyes. I wear glasses too, so the eye relief is considerably better on the SL2-S EVF.

The Panasonic 50mm f/1.8 nifty fifty works very well, light and sharp... Have been using that on my SL2S daily! For USD350, you can't complain.

I am fresh off of several engagement and wedding jobs ... the sl75 and sl2s combo are a special combo. Mind blown. I did use S focusing with careful timing. Those colors make it all worth it to me.
The SL lenses are absolutely incredible. That sigma 105 was almost impossible to focus with on auto. I totally agree, worth any minor inconvenience for the final result
Seriously considering this to go along with M10P + 21SEM, 35FLE2, 50F1v3. Shooting some events as a second/third tog. I’m missing a second cam and a modern tele. Was thinking of the M10M before this..
Hello, you should try vintage lenses on this. The ones I prefer are the Pentax 50mm f/1.2 and the Pentax 28mm f/2.8. The results are amazing!

There is a new battery the BP-SCL6 the older is the SCL4 I hope I’m getting the models correct, the newer one has more capacity was released with the Q3 and can do internal charging as advertised, I haven’t tried it myself but will try soon.
I have a few, I haven’t tried the internal charging with them yet with the camera turned on. I’ll run some tests

Outstanding, realistic review. If you could only buy the M10 or the SL-2S, having owned both, which would it be? I have to make that choice. Leaning towards the SL, as I already have a Q2.

Did you use any other autofocus lenses besides the Sigma macro? The native Leica lenses worked better as far as autofocus? What the difference between this body and the original SL?
Yes, I have a Leica 24-70 that I use regularly on it and I’ve used the leica apo 35 and 50. All perform very well, much better than the sigma but not as good as say canon or Sony. Biggest differences from the SL type 601 is going to be video functions

Late comment, but I’ve been using the sl2s for mostly photo for several years and I think the Panasonic lenses work amazing for autofocus, second only to the Leica stuff. Our main lens for jobs is the 50mm 1.4 from Panasonic and it’s great. Haven’t shot enough video to have an opinion that way.
Verdict is I need to test out some Panasonic lenses!
I'm in the Canon System with the R6 and another body. I will switch to the Leica SL2-s, so I can adapt the small voigtländer lenses. I'm done with carrying 2kg heavy zooms.
The sl2-s is a tank but with those adapted m lenses it feels great!

There’s quite a few differences specifically in video, but there is a big fan base of people who love the SL 601 sensor. I’ve never used it but heard great things about it
As an owner of the phaseone iq3 100, nikon z8 and the Leica sl2s, the leica sl2s holds it's own. if your subjects are not moving erratically, it's not bad, but when i need to absolutely nail focus in erratic situations, it's sad to say the Leica goes in the bag and the Nikon z8 nails it every time. If Leica could develop a similar autofocus system to that of the canon and Nikon, it would give Leica a major boost. Another area that would need to be revamped is the service. Leica is a small company in the grand scheme of things, but they make some great products and have only a few things to work on.
Totally agree! I’m hoping that the SL3 has phase detect autofocus in it like the lumix S5 II has. But hopefully better! I’ve shocked myself with some of the shots I’ve nailed focus on with my SL2S but at the end of the day I’m putting a lot of trust in the system as my only autofocus system haha

Definitely a big upgrade from the canon R. New camera is rumored to be out first quarter 2024 but it’ll be 💸💸💸

Been using my SL2-S a lot more on client projects like product photos and some social media videos for IG. I love using the 50mm f/2 ASPH for this kind of work. AF performance for video in my case is useable as most of stuff I’m filming is coffee being made so nothing crazy extravagant. However, for the fancier videos, I pull out the R6 Mark 2 or C70. Great video as always brotha! 🔴

Love mine but totally agree with your assessment .Criminal to have put such a poor AF in this body . As a result I have not invested in the native glass .I mostly use my M lenses apart from a Pany 70 /200 and certain CL lenses ... and yes black tape over the red dot :}

Have two of these and I work them hard. 3 weeks ago one of them gave up and died after just 2 years. Motherboard and shutter both failed. Leica customer service appalling

A Leica with third party lenses doesn't make sense to me. It's the Leica- glass what makes the difference to other brands - if there is any difference at all. In many situations you will not see a difference compared to Canon, Nikon or Sony. But your wallet will feel the difference for sure 🤑
