  • The Hydropsyche caddis is a great caseless caddis imitation. Here in Central Pennsylvania caddis species are very prominent in our streams. That is why you see me tying a lot of caddis patterns on my channel. This pattern at first may look a little intimidating but I promise it is not as hard as it may look.
I say it all the time, change the color and size of the fly to match the insects in you stream. This pattern is no different. I would definitely tie this fly smaller. Another thing you could do if you would like is to add a tungsten bead to get this thing down a little quicker.
Please head over to our website www.holsingers... for all the materials needed to tie this fly and others. If you have any questions, please email me at holsingersflyshop@gmail.com.

You bet! It's crazy how simple the legs are. with a little practice this is a very realistic looking pattern.

Shawn, That tie may take a little longer than others, but it sure looks worth it! Thanks for sharing.

You got that right! Honestly for the realism it creates, I don't really think it takes that long compared to other realistic style patterns

Great pattern Shawn! I tied some today. As others commented, I never saw pheasant tail fibers used for legs. Thanks for sharing!

Nice use of the ostrich but I’m really amazed by the use of the stripped butt of the pheasant barbule. That really makes great looking legs. Was that your idea? It’s brilliant. In 40 years of tying, I’ve never seen that done.

No I can’t take the credit for that one. I’ve been seeing guys doing that for a couple of years. I see a lot of European guys I follow doing it.

@@HolsingersFlyShop Even if it’s not your idea, thank you for sharing it. It’s a very creative use of something normally just cut off & thrown away.
