*does medieval navy video* forgets the oldest official navy in the world, kek.
No one ever remembers us Indians
If you plan on adding Portugal, you should probably write a text that goes something like this: "Portuguese Navy be like: Build caravels, a new type of ship that can sail fast, even with the wind blowing the opposite direction; put cannons on the sides of the ships and make it easier to destroy and sink enemy fleets that have a lot more vessels than our own. Build carracks, a big type of ship that can transport more goods and withstand wider ranges of attacks from corsairs."
You could do this in many different ways, but these few examples are probably the ones I would personally include in one of these videos for the sake of keeping the segment short.
Nusantara(Majapahit, Srivijaya(Sriwijaya), etc)??
U forgor the fact the arsenal could produce, at its highest, 1 ship PER DAY with the coverage of 12% of Venice Itself.
Ancient Navies were basically battering rams with very bad handling.
I'm willing to bet that you just have this random thought while walking or showering.
Ancient Navies are Leeroy Jenkins.
Mate thought people back then got propeller and engine or something.
The byzantine navy would like to have a word with you
well... it's not ancient but you know
Chinese navy: P I R A T E S
Polynesian sea finding is like an old engineer that can tell the angle of a wall just by looking at it
You can't tell those guys weren't practically magical considering what they could do with rope, wood and a left hand
imagine relying on stars by word of mouth taught strategies like no book to double check your ideas
fucking insane it took generations to figure out stars and then they had no way to record the knowledge other than by telling their descendants like a game of telephone that makes or breaks the GPS
Māori friends of mine would say it is much less idealized. The Pacific usually has very predictable wind and water patterns, maintain a steady path and return along it and you can go very far. But one big storm and you may be fucked.
@@TheGroundedAviator tbf that's like 2 metaphors away from a magic system
Oh yeah we can traverse some of the world's harshest environments which no member of our species is capable of surviving without assistance just by knowing *how the wind and ocean move*
@@airplanes_aren.t_real Exactly, and taking it bit by bit, it took thousands of years by many separate groups who splintered off at some point or another due to the distance, but in the end, they spread out through the great ocean.
The Pacific is blessed with usually good conditions for it, try it in the Atlantic and you're dead in a week!
Also remember, there would've been literal hundreds of expeditions. Law of large numbers basically guarantee that at least a couple would've made land
0:30 French and English navies: Fuck it, land battle time!
Rome: sniffs..I'm proud of you, Britannia, Gallia.
Like predecessor, like successors.
I wonder how often war leaders trashed talked their rivals
"Know that if the wind was in my favor, you would not be alive to feel it."
"Hypotheticals are a poor method of coping for one's lack of skill and competence"
You should read the Cossack letter to Mehmed IV lol. To see historically accurate trash talk.
e.g. medieval equivalent to modern day 'Skill issue' statements.
oh they very much did.
people think the two fingered insult used by brits comes from archers basically showing their enemy that they still have the two fingers they need to use a longbow and pluck them off.
@@theicepickthatkilledtrotsk658mfw a letter from the pre-victorian era that literally reads "FUck ur mom"
Spanish navy: Mucho cannon = Mucho damage
Still cant believe that China at one point had one of the most largest and possibly most powerful navy, with so much potential for seafaring only for them to decide" eh who needs exploring when we got everything right here" then burn down every single last ship they had, i cant even imagine the pain the sailors must have felt watching that.
They did seafare. But since most of the regions they went were actually poorer than China or did not have what they needed they just decided its not worth it.
Because colonizing isn’t based.. they just want to do hood rat stuff with their friends 🥴
Got to remember that ships and sailors cost lots of money to maintain.
My guess is, China simply chose land power over naval power, because an army has a better chance of keeping a tributary state loyal than a fleet does
I am guessing this based on civ 6 tho 🤷♂️ shits expensive
@@XXXTENTAClON227 u r not wrong, China considered itself a land based power. They scuttled their ships caus they were too expensive to maintain
@@lte7151Well also their eunuchs and elite have been afraid of a new class of bourgeoise effect that can make China go another down or decline economy.
As a barbary pirate headed for italy, this is the most historically accurate navy video.
UR BEING RATCHET!!!!!!
Italy, nah mate we’re headed for Ireland
Watchout for the americans bro

bruh Byzantine Navy is massively underrated. Bros just went out destroyed a fleet and came back like it was nothing. Also the Genoese and Hospitaller navies were excellent.
Crusader are all absolutely chad tbh. Got so many things done with so little, and were able to break ottoman spine even when they were in power.
@@deauthorsadeptus6920 Imagine a world in which Richard the Lionheart didn't have to turn back to England because of his traitorous brothers schemes?
the colonization of the pacific (which is you know, A THIRD OF THE PLANET) by the polynesians without metalworking or a compass or any of that easy mode sh*t is one of the coolest things ever
3000 years of slowly keeping track of wind and water currents, it is most amazing in how simple it was. By keeping track of certain stars and staying of a steady current you can go far out and return. It had a weakness though, one big sudden storm and you may ger lost.
It takes some massive balls to use a flamethrower fueled with some weird ancient napalm that burns on water while you are on a wooden ship.
All better then trying to destroy enemy boat with bows and ballistas.
"You cannot serve god and money''
Venice be like: Worth a try though.
Genoa, Pisa and Amalfi: shit that's all you had to say
That's what non-Europeans liked about Venice or Venicians. They weren't as uppity as other Catholic states over doing business with non-Christians & non-Catholics.
Sure, you got lots of Italian Condotieri/Mercenary armies from other states helping whoever paid them. But that's not quite the same as willingly creating strong diplomatic ties & trade relations with people their Church considers "Heretics" & "Infidels".
Portuguese Navy: Put cannons on boats and set sail around the world for spices and maybe some silk( if had space enough). Use the cannons if they refuse to give the same spices.
Also: develop breech-loading cannons to output 2-3x the firepower of your opponents, to really make them regret not trading with you
Sounds almost like the Dutch Navy too

I'm pretty sure they lost their fleet to Japan.
Kamakazi winds; anyone that got to the mainland of Japan, which was probobly minimal in comparison to the giant fleet they sent, was destroyed easily.@@foxpro3002
@@foxpro3002 Yes, they were heavily defeated twice due to great storms. But even if they successfully entered Japan and invaded, pretty sure they won’t last long.

@@prezentoappr1171 Welp, Srivijaya at the time had a rivalry on internal Indonesia. Especially the Chola Invasion because the progress of trade is slowly by the rivalry. Mongol invasion is not only because of cutting ears but also had the intent to make some relationship and wanted to take down the last crazy ass Jayakatwang (Cut the embassy ear is not Wijaya but the last king if I remember is Negarakertagama or some last successor before died by Jayakatwang).
Also Raden Wijaya at the time was a pragmatic leader by using the Mongol army and backstabbing when a celebration party was held.

Mongol navy : if I had a nickel for everytime my navy was destroyed by a storm i had two nickles wich isn't a lot but it's weird it happened twice

Don't forget the polynesian navy apparently used magic lights called 'Te lapa' to navigate which showed them the way while on high seas.
We still have no clue wtf they mean by that.

Building a huge navy just to have it all set blaze is a Chinese tradition going all the way back to the Battle of Chibi.
And then there were the romans: Literally turning naval battles into land battles

Every medieval navy in a nutshell…
Byzantine Navy: Uses Greek Fire to burn the Arab ships.
Korean Navy: Turtle Ships ram an entire fleet of Japanese ships.
Luck plays such a massive role in naval battle
Don't know much about medieval ships but thank you for teaching me about most medieval ships because now I know but I wonder what was the most scariest one? Probably the polynesian one.
you forgot the navy of the Javanese, the portuguese of Malacca once wrote about Javanese ships to be on parr and even bigger than the ones by Zheng He and these ships cannot be destroyed or sink with a few canonballs.
