Reminds me of the lorax. Interesting documentary and greetings from Canada and Blackfoot territory. We native Americans are still alive and kicking some corporate butt. Much respect for the Sami and their struggle. Corporations are viruses, consuming and once the resources are gone, they move on leaving nothing.

Indeed they should be. But if your implying a non sequitur that because some native tribes own casinos, then they must all own casinos then your a fool.

That's awesome, but these guys don't have any political power. They will be crushed.
In fact, In Sweden, the way of life is completely gone*.The Bearded Lichen that provides sustenance to their way of life has been destroyed by companies.
*(Except for one individual who doesn't speak his own language anymore because the government beat the Sami when they spoke their language. They got sent to "school" and you know the same old story).

Yup. In Wisconsin, they spent a decade fighting off a copper mine, and the tribes all got together and bought it so they couldn't pollute the pristine Wolf River, but last summer some foreign company was slant drilling for sulfur not 7 miles away, and it got no news coverage, except locals news. The locals weren't even told that it was happening, so the fight starts all over again!

It is of such a great importance to have this documentary made and show it to as many swedish, finnish, russian and norwegian citizens. Such a shame that this is happening in Europe in the 21st Century. Land-grabbing and human rights violations are not acceptable, nowhere in the world and not in Sapmi. The Answer is Grow Hemp it makes for a much better paper and is sustainable; can be grown anywhere and in any climate. A ten acre Hemp field produces as much paper as ten acres of timber, the bennifit is it takes ONE YEAR to regrow hemp juxtaposed to ten plus years to regrow trees. Hemp makes a stronger more elegant paper product. Similarly in constructing housing and buildings, Hemp crete can be used to build a fireproof, breathable organic alternative to timber. It is the strongest, most sensible and as mentioned above sustainable buildable materal. Note: Hemp crete is impervious to insects as well as mold and mildew. When hempcrete is used as a replacement to timber, the trees can be saved along with the niche for all who's survival depends on nature's natural habitat.

With every felled tree and poisoned stream, home for nature and it's livelihood is lost, and the day of reckoning is brought forth. There is nothing shocking about it if you're aware of history. It has been going on for as long as anybody can remember. The worst days are over when things could escalate to violence.
Most of the Saami didn't use to herd reindeers in the past, they simply hunted and fished near Finns, Nowegians and Swedes. They were driven northward and then took up reindeer herding as their primary livelihood. Many of them never did that though and simply assimilated.

    • @ahkkariq7406
      @ahkkariq7406 Год назад

Reindeer herding became common when the taxation of the Sami was so harsh that they had to take out more animals than was sustainable in order to be able to pay taxes, among other things in the form of furs to the Swedish/Finnish and Danish/Norwegian authorities. As reindeer herds shrank, reindeer herding became necessary for survival.

Mesmerised by the legend that their armed alliance with Adolf Hitler's Nazi German empire was, somehow, proportionate to their beloved status as ' victims ' of ' Soviet Russian aggression '. The children of the capitalists will simply carry on this mindless way of death unless they are educated to respect and honor the earth and the indigenous people who are mandated to protect the life of the land for now and future generations. The forest industry is one of the largest businesses in Finland. You would essentially cripple the whole nation without it.
There is the growing national debt and ongoing recession, which are in my opinion far bigger problems because they affect millions rather than a few thousand, like the Lapps.
And don't kid yourself, while there are cultural differences there are no such huge differences from a genetic perspective. Doubt you could tell a Finn dressing up as a Saami from a Saami.

There are cultural characteristics that are common to the entire circumpolar area, and some of these characteristics go all the way down to southern parts of South America. Examples are the use of feathers in spiritual rituals, bear worship and music.
There is no more than five kilometers between the islands in the Bering Strait that belong to Russia and those that belong to the United States. In winter, the strait freezes over, and you actually can cross it on foot. Do not forget that Alaska was Russian. The US bought Alaska from Russia in 1867. You don't have to go back further than the beginning of the Cold War to find the latest connection. Gorbachev and Reagan tried help to melt the "ice cap", which, both literally and figuratively, separated the countries for economic and political reasons. At that time many people on either side of the Bering Strait spoke the same language and shared the same genetic material, but had not met each other since the Cold War.

We sami were born from mix of siberian samoyed type people and europeans 4000 years ago when ancient samoyed people kind migrated to northern europe from north asia and kind of took over as were more succesfull to survive.
Google nenets and nganasan people. You understand then. Those are from our brother tribes that staid in asian side while we are from tribe that traveled to west and mixed with locals.
Samoyed ancestral culture originates from between manchuria china and chuckhi peoples land close to alaska. Chuckhi are related to inuits.
Our ancestral samoyed kind of people migrated from east siberia to west siberia and some then to europes side resulting in to us sami.

Ffs guys, please look a bit further than this documentary. You're all acting like the timber industry there is some evil corporation. Yes there has to be a deal struck between areas designated for wood production and old forests that are left alone, but it's not like this is clear-cutting forests that never grow back. All the trees are replanted and yes the forests for wood production are different than old forests. There are quite a lot of national parks in northern scandinavia as well where there is no conflict at all. Overall the sparsely populated north is ideal for wood production as the rest of Europe is more densely populated. And there has to be wood production, and i'd rather have it from there where trees are replanted and certain areas are off-limits than clear-cutting another rainforest for that purpose. Unless you all stop using wood products, but we all know that isn't going to happen anytime soon.
But i guess to some people here i'll just be an inconsiderate asshole

Can't support either side here. Am I going to support the minority population with a dying culture or the company which supplies half a million people with jobs. I belive there are more precautions that can be made for lapland forrestry but green peace are the last people who should be the judge of that. It's like Matti Vanhanen said. We live in a country where there are better means to prevent ecological destruction.
Green peace just leave environmental work up to people who have acctually gotten 4-8 years of education in the field. With activism comes poor judgement.
The difference between environmental workers in for example wwf or in the government, and green peace. Is that we have an objective view of what can and cannot be done or even what should not be done at all.
Green peace has one agenda, nothing can or should be touched in the environment, there is no reasoning with arrogance.
