There is nothing shocking about it if you're aware of history. It has been going on for as long as anybody can remember. The worst days are over when things could escalate to violence. Most of the Saami didn't use to herd reindeers in the past, they simply hunted and fished near Finns, Nowegians and Swedes. They were driven northward and then took up reindeer herding as their primary livelihood. Many of them never did that though and simply assimilated.
Reindeer herding became common when the taxation of the Sami was so harsh that they had to take out more animals than was sustainable in order to be able to pay taxes, among other things in the form of furs to the Swedish/Finnish and Danish/Norwegian authorities. As reindeer herds shrank, reindeer herding became necessary for survival.
very great and moving and sobering documentary. so this was done in 2007, what is the current state of affairs for the Sami people in Finland and their conflict with special interests and non-Indigenous Finnish society?
It's especially appalling to me that Finns have spent over half a century, now, almost luxuriating in a delight in notions of martyrdom. Re: ' The Winter War ', ' The Continuation War '. Mesmerised by the legend that their armed alliance with Adolf Hitler's Nazi German empire was, somehow, proportionate to their beloved status as ' victims ' of ' Soviet Russian aggression '. Meanwhile, we find the Finnish state pouring in an enormous amount of repressive and dispossessive work into the alienation ( or sheer destruction ) of Samis.
Throughout history Finns have been a very abused group of people. Finnish people are indegineous to Finland and are related to the Saami people. The Saami arent treated as bad in Finland as Sweden. But yes i think they deserve more rights.

The forest industry is one of the largest businesses in Finland. You would essentially cripple the whole nation without it. There is the growing national debt and ongoing recession, which are in my opinion far bigger problems because they affect millions rather than a few thousand, like the Lapps. And don't kid yourself, while there are cultural differences there are no such huge differences from a genetic perspective. Doubt you could tell a Finn dressing up as a Saami from a Saami.
That is because modern sami are so mixed with finns, swedes, norwegian, russian white folk. Also lots of finns are now part sami mixed. But originally in older times sami and finns looked clearly different and many sami still look very siberian. Finns with siberian appearance always have sami ancestry
My boyfriend is Sami. My daughter in law is Native American. Music, jewelry, spiritual outlook, cradleboards , teepee. There must have been land connecting Sweden and North America at one point. Maybe during the Ice age. But then how did they keep this connection intact?
@@teovu5557 You are wrong. Samer did not come to Nordkalotten. Those who came were not Sami. They were a small group of men who blended in with people already living in the place. This process became what we know today as Sami, and it is confirmed by historical sources, as well as archaeological, linguistic and genetic findings.
There are cultural characteristics that are common to the entire circumpolar area, and some of these characteristics go all the way down to southern parts of South America. Examples are the use of feathers in spiritual rituals, bear worship and music. There is no more than five kilometers between the islands in the Bering Strait that belong to Russia and those that belong to the United States. In winter, the strait freezes over, and you actually can cross it on foot. Do not forget that Alaska was Russian. The US bought Alaska from Russia in 1867. You don't have to go back further than the beginning of the Cold War to find the latest connection. Gorbachev and Reagan tried help to melt the "ice cap", which, both literally and figuratively, separated the countries for economic and political reasons. At that time many people on either side of the Bering Strait spoke the same language and shared the same genetic material, but had not met each other since the Cold War.

Where do Europeans come from? ... It has previously been believed that Europeans can trace their ancestry back to two ancient groups: the hunter-gathers indigenous to western Europe
There has only been 3 populations of Europeans Western Hunter Gather, 45,000 years ago,The Anatolian Farmers, came 20,000 years ago Indo European came 4,000 year ago all modern European are made up of these 3 populations no one from Asia.
Ffs guys, please look a bit further than this documentary. You're all acting like the timber industry there is some evil corporation. Yes there has to be a deal struck between areas designated for wood production and old forests that are left alone, but it's not like this is clear-cutting forests that never grow back. All the trees are replanted and yes the forests for wood production are different than old forests. There are quite a lot of national parks in northern scandinavia as well where there is no conflict at all. Overall the sparsely populated north is ideal for wood production as the rest of Europe is more densely populated. And there has to be wood production, and i'd rather have it from there where trees are replanted and certain areas are off-limits than clear-cutting another rainforest for that purpose. Unless you all stop using wood products, but we all know that isn't going to happen anytime soon. But i guess to some people here i'll just be an inconsiderate asshole
Cut the trees, use the money to buy food for the reindeer, if that’s what they need. Way too many people wanting to have control over land which they don’t own.

"muh reindeers" How about stopping the reindeer herding? It's fucking common logic to stop business that doesn't profit. There's absolutely no reason why one groups should have special treatment over the other! Special treatment Sami people to continue their unprofitable business is as racist and injustice as fuck!
So,if I start a business on your property, disregarding your legal rights, and interfering with your business, it is logical for you to stop your business? I don't think so.
It is their legal rights, that the land is not used in a way that endangers their business. The "unprofitable" part you describes comes from taking what is legally theirs. It is stealing from them, that makes their livelihoods unprofitable.
Can't support either side here. Am I going to support the minority population with a dying culture or the company which supplies half a million people with jobs. I belive there are more precautions that can be made for lapland forrestry but green peace are the last people who should be the judge of that. It's like Matti Vanhanen said. We live in a country where there are better means to prevent ecological destruction. Green peace just leave environmental work up to people who have acctually gotten 4-8 years of education in the field. With activism comes poor judgement. The difference between environmental workers in for example wwf or in the government, and green peace. Is that we have an objective view of what can and cannot be done or even what should not be done at all. Green peace has one agenda, nothing can or should be touched in the environment, there is no reasoning with arrogance.

You do not get away with destroying His earth and His people who love and depend upon Him......🥺
Very much strengt in the war against destroying the grounds and woods.Hopefully the Sami GEt a bigger voice in defending their rights.
Finland must do more to save these forests!
Here is almost nothing but forest. About much as area of whole Florida. So what are you talking about?Forestry is Finnish way of survive in north.
Do not use toiletpapier like me. Indonesian people do not use toiletpapier.
So much of what I've read about the Sami reminds me of the Native Americans. Even the music the first time I heard it sounds similar. I found out I have some Sami ancestry. I would love to know more about them.
Hemp, industrial hemp.
Thank you Green-peace. For trying to protect the Herders and their forestier.
How would things change if a lot of the larger trees were girdled, and thus top killed, or even selectively "spiked" so as to make it economically unfeasible to continue logging operations in certain areas?!
Perhaps it's time for the Saami people to learn to fight fire with FIRE!
I always must side with the underdog! The Indigenous peoples always get shafted in such economic conflicts! Perhaps it's time to show the corporate scum just who is really in control of this land! =The Saami people!!!
so you advocating murdering loggers?
P.s.I like to specify that greenpeace-fieldworkers are mostly of good intentions. That is why they are assigned to go out by their superiors;for p.r. reasons.
I love saomi people
This is heartbreaking to watch! How is t situation today? And how do all parties feel about rewatching this documentary? To my millennial eyes witnessing this ignorant and racist behavior is chocking, especially when you realize that this is just 15 years ago not 100! I really hope that social media has help bring some justices to voice of the Sami, and the stories that are being told to the public.

People needs to stop consuming. period, end of story. Use as little as possible. Stop buying crap you don't need. That'd go a long way. Ban all single use plastic!
Since the corporations are getting what they want I suspect they know who is winning.
Their land should be a world heritage sight....🤦♀️

@@ahkkariq7406 Same thing happened in siberia. Indigenous people there were mostly hunter gatherers before the slavic russian taxation started there
This is from eight years ago. Has nothing been done to mark the rights of the Sami people and their way of life??
Nope.
very great and moving and sobering documentary. so this was done in 2007, what is the current state of affairs for the Sami people in Finland and their conflict with special interests and non-Indigenous Finnish society?
Finnish people are indigenous in here (Finland) - just like Sami. We are related.
@@Erkele interesting! thanks for clarifying that. so the Sami are treated mostly well in Finland compared to the other places they live?
My Mother was from Finland!.Born in Helsinki. Her name was Zoe Margurite Zetterberg! I live in Utah, USA
@@bonnierobinson8684 nice! fascinating. and have relations improved with the Sami people and the larger Finnish population and its establishment?
Finnish are suomi.
@@pyromorph6540 Finns came from estonia in medieval times as settlers to expand farming land and some finns are germanic settlers from west. So finns are not so indigenous xD. Settlers mostly like euros in america.
Sami have been in finland even in southern finland much earlier 4000 years ago starting.
Finns have been very abusers too lets be honest. Saying this as sami finn mixed guy. Finns have nothing to complain about now in modern day. Doing the best in world.
@@pyromorph6540 also sami and finns are nothing similar xD
Traditional finns were baltic farmers culturally while sami lived like indigenous siberian people. Entirely different opposites besides bit of shared genes and language from long long 3000 years ago
I kinda what to go to northern Norway and see saami culture bc I know I’m saami decent and the only one who knew the culture died before I was born

I have respect for anyone who stands up against selfappointed authorities and applaud them&specially the Sami People.I read a book from a visitor to them,Linda Wormhoudt a Dutch woman.Allthough it is my meaning that Greenpeace is an agent of those same selfappointed authorities.Remember j.f.k.'s wordt;"not through invasion ,but through infiltration...",he stated these hidden ones work.Time &again you see this scenario been played out.In Ireland,North America&those People's,Africa's indiginous culture, the antinuclear movement and peacemovement.personally i believe that Greenpeace is only for appearances.

The non indigenous world is extremely IRRESPONSIBLE and it must stop. The children of the capitalists will simply carry on this mindless way of death unless they are educated to respect and honor the earth and the indigenous people who are mandated to protect the life of the land for now and future generations. Heaven help the next planet these immature capitalists go to with their ideas of what they are doing for profit , fuck profit a human only needs responsibility and a healthy land to have a magnificent life.
@@Viso333 You have to keep in mind that most Europeans don't even look European, they look MIddle Eastern Anatolian, especially Mediterraneans.
My boyfriend is Sami. My daughter in law is Native American. Music, jewelry, spiritual outlook, cradleboards , teepee. There must have been land connecting Sweden and North America at one point. Maybe during the Ice age. But then how did they keep this connection intact?
saami n finns came from siberia to europe their language n culture is from siberia as is native americans.
We sami were born from mix of siberian samoyed type people and europeans 4000 years ago when ancient samoyed people kind migrated to northern europe from north asia and kind of took over as were more succesfull to survive.
Google nenets and nganasan people. You understand then. Those are from our brother tribes that staid in asian side while we are from tribe that traveled to west and mixed with locals.
Samoyed ancestral culture originates from between manchuria china and chuckhi peoples land close to alaska. Chuckhi are related to inuits.
Our ancestral samoyed kind of people migrated from east siberia to west siberia and some then to europes side resulting in to us sami.
Native american originate also from siberia so no wonder
@@teovu5557 Traditional Finns were culturally just baltian farmers though lets be honest. Just with bit of siberian mixed blood and words in language from siberian assimilates xD

Sámi singing.. their traditional music style

the subtitles are annoying as hell

1600 Years ago There Was No Swedish or Norway or Finland. There was only Asians Explores & Sami People are Them ( An old Siamese Explores (thailand today) & Mongols. They Where There And Even Japan was There Before Arrival of Other Folks ) Europeans
And this is the land of the Sami people and they are all colonizers 😂
This is fucked up
Lame..
Excuse me?
Then get the fuck out!
so The Name Sami(sapmi) The origin is Siam , Eventhough they Are Not Asians today , The Name is Ralated to SIAM(thailand today) The Siamese Explores Have Been Known to Explore the 4 Corners ig the World Along with Mongolias. Our ancestors came from north asia and mixed with euros but not from siam haha.
We are related to samoyed people nenets and nganasan
"muh reindeers" How about stopping the reindeer herding? It's fucking common logic to stop business that doesn't profit. There's absolutely no reason why one groups should have special treatment over the other! Special treatment Sami people to continue their unprofitable business is as racist and injustice as fuck!
So,if I start a business on your property, disregarding your legal rights, and interfering with your business, it is logical for you to stop your business? I don't think so.
wh- what? It's not their land to begin with!
It is their legal rights, that the land is not used in a way that endangers their business. The "unprofitable" part you describes comes from taking what is legally theirs. It is stealing from them, that makes their livelihoods unprofitable.
It's NOT their legal right! Why should they be allowed to continue their unprofitable business in others expense? That's real stealing!
Its their legal right, because there is a law that says so, dummy.
