I was able to fix my 80+ year old mother-in-law ‘s Bose Wave radio that she and her late husband use to enjoy and now she can enjoy it again. She is really happy. Almost brought a tear to her eye hearing it working again. Just one personal preference suggestion, I replaced the caps one at a time so I wouldn’t get mixed up. I also put a piece of electrical tape on the board to indicate the polarity so I wouldn’t mix it up after removing the bad cap. Thanks again!!!

The darn thing is working again:) The CD player wasn't able to play discs. I happened to have an old Kensington Drive Guardian cd cleaner disc. I ran that in the CD player and now that works as well. My wave radio is doing just fine, but I saved this vid and subscribed just in case! I've replaced caps on other electronics before- it's a pretty straight forward fix!
Thanks - this was exactly the problem with my Bose wave radio. Got the 6 capacitors from DigiKey, followed the video, now it's working great. In my case it was the 47uF cap that had gone open circuit with no capacitance. I have a meter, measured all 6 after removing them, the other 5 were fine. Maybe this saves someone else time if they want to try just changing the 47uF first ?. Appreciate the video, thanks very much.
I don't understand the order of the replacements I ordered all the Digi key caps but he doesn't say this one here is this specific cap and so on. I don't have any idea which one goes where. I'll try just the one you said to try first. Once I figure out which one that is😊. Maybe I just missed the order.
Hi Tom, I also just noticed that my capacitor supplier substituted what I ordered a 47uF 16V with a 47uF 25V. Will this affect anything? Also, when looking at the 6 capacitors that you replaced, several of my original Bose ones are listed at 6V but I ordered mainly 16V replacement versions. Please let me know if this seems like a concern before I continue my repair. Thanks!!!
Replacing with the same mfd but higher max voltage rating is okay. The capacitor will be physically larger which may impact making the cover fit but electrically it is fine.
Great video, Tom. This gives me confidence that I can do the repair by myself. I have an AWRCC2 model which is a white color, so the capacitors should be the same to your AWRCC1. I have few questions though... 1) Which capacitors did you use on your list (items 1-8)? 2) Why did you not use the same style SMD aluminum electrolytic capacitors but instead you used through-hole electrolytic capacitors? 3) What size of the solder lead and what size of the solder iron tip did you use? Thank you
1) I added the list of capacitors I replaced to the description. 2) I chose to use radial lead to make it easier for my large fingers and large tip iron to work in the tight spaces. I don't have SMD tools and didn't want to mess things up. Personal choice and familiarity with the technique also played a role. 3) Solder=Plusivo 60/40 0.6mm 15% flux. Tip is a T12-BL (and with the braid I used a T12-K tip)

Thanks for the video! Going to try mine out. The foam surronding the wires at the very beginning on mine are completely crumbling. I was wondering, would it be worth replacing? Is there a product specifically made to foam wires?
The foam degrades over time. It is used to prevent the wires from vibrating from the sound. You can substitute cloth tape like is used in medical ace bandages. Anything similar that will keep the speaker wires from vibrating and making noise. The wave radio routes the sound through the plastic shell so anything nearby needs to be protected from vibrations.
Hello Tom: I am working on a Bose Wave II AWR1B2 that does not power up. Nothing showing in the display. No visible damage to any capacitors so far. 1) Is there a way to power up the unit without the remote? 2) should I replace the 2 larger capacitors on the main board as a first step? 3) what else do you recommend I check. Hi, as I don't have access to that model I don't know how it should operate. But as a guess I'd say that if there is no display that maybe the power supply is bad, or something on the logic board (such as a shorted capacitor) is causing the power supply to shut down. Before replacing components I would check voltages with a multimeter on each of the boards. If no voltage than you could check for shorts with the power supply disconnected. Other than these initial steps I have no other thoughts.

I completely forgot about the heat gun trick that we used all the time to get something working. Wife’s hair dryer for about 3 minutes and moved it off the cold back porch. Music is Bose on!! Thanks for the digikey cart. Ordered, received, and installed. It now works with fm, am, and cd, but the clock won't hold a setting and the speakers make popping sound when turned on and off. Any suggestions to complete the fix? Thanks.
Hi Tom, How do I determine the polarity of the capacitors on the original Bose board? I understand that on the new ones, the longer lead is the +. However I don’t know which is + and - on the old originals. Thanks. Sorry for the simple question.
The black stripe on the surface mount capacitors is negative. Also if you look closely at the board after the caps are removed you may see a tiny white dash near the pad that is the negative. Lead length shouldn't be relied upon exclusively. There should be a polarity marking on the side of the new capacitors that indicate which lead is negative. I replaced a total of six capacitors within the metal shroud as follows: 1- 100uf @ 6v P803-ND/ECE-A0JKA101 2- 22uf @ 6v P800-ND/ECE-A0JKA220 2- 10uf @ 16v P807-ND/ECE-A1CKA100 1- 47uf @ 6v P802-ND/ECE-A0JKA470 In my parts list I ordered extra quantities of these values since they were inexpensive (in case they got damaged during the repair). I also went ahead and ordered the values for the capacitors outside of the metal shroud just in case any of them had failed since I didn't know which ones were actually bad. Regarding hard to read values: If the voltage is hard to read you can always use a 16v rated part. If the value is hard to read then you may have to guess and find a value nearby. These capacitors typically have a tolerance of 20% and the circuit design may allow for a wide range of values depending on the purpose. So you can always purchase a few possible values and just try them in the radio to see if it makes it work. Without schematics it is impossible to know for sure but many of these capacitors are used for filtering and the exact value isn't that important.
That is a bit harder to diagnose. Could be anything from mechanical affecting tracking, to dirty laser pickup, to something electrical. You could try recapping the capacitors near the cd connector or purchase a cd mechanism to try. Good luck.

I am a complete newbee, and I'm looking at the capacitors in my unit, trying to determine how to decipher the difference between the R4 10 16v and Q4 10 16v. Are they interchangeable? Thanks
I think you are referring to the markings on the original surface mount capacitors. In my Bose unit each capacitor has 3 lines of markings. Top line is a series code and can be ignored. Middle is the capacitance in microfarads and 3rd line is the max voltage rating. So R4-10-16V and Q4-10-16V are identical. However, each capacitor manufacturer codes things differently, so if the values are not rational then you might need to look the codes up on a chart. When referring to the parts list I posted, I did add some extra quantity to a few of the values just so I would have a spare cap in case I messed up the soldering job or needed to replace more capacitors elsewhere in the unit.
I don't repair units for a living so I would be reluctant to offer to do this. Since the shipping costs both ways would be significant I suggest you just sell your broken unit on ebay or similar sites listing the problem for prospective buyers. Someone then may decide to pick up your device to fix it or use for parts.
The link to my digikey cart is in the description. There are more than six capacitors in my cart since they are very inexpensive compared to shipping costs and your radio might need others that mine did not.
