  • Racism can be deeply traumatic. And for one teenager who was repeatedly experiencing racism, it was triggering a freeze response.
So how did Thema Bryant-Davis, PhD work with her?
Thema will also explain the difference between traditional trauma therapy and liberation therapy, and why liberation therapy can be so critical for people from marginalized communities.

Being hated for who you are and how you’re born is one of the most traumatic things that could ever happen to a person. Thank you for making this video

This is so beautiful to hear. Racism is so traumatic we really need to support mental health as part of this movement.

wowowow this was transformational, thank you for sharing. It's the first time I heard about liberation/de-colonizing theory within the context of therapy. I have dealt with racism often in my life (and often it was not over racism which made it all the harder to recognize and deal with) and trying to explore the injustices I've experienced in my therapy sessions actually made me feel worse. My therapist made it out that I was overreacting or that I was projecting and assuming the other person had evil intent when I talked about some of the racial situations I felt distressed by. I hope more therapists learn about how to recognize and help clients process racial trauma in this way, it would have been very helpful for me.

Not internalizing negative thoughts are important. They need to be addressed as soon as possible.

Powerful teaching on the gift of listening and allowing true expression. Just the beginning of a healing process, sure, but an essential first step. Thank you for posting.

It’s good to hear that the adoptive parents showed the therapy and etc. That shows they aren’t completely diabolical. That’s a relief. Hugs and strength to the kids who aren’t given any comfort in their environment.

Would you have any specific resources that you would recommend to learn more about decolonizing therapy and liberation psychology? I'll also be doing my own research :) Thanks!!

International adoption is atrocious. The suffering and pain from growing up and learning to dislike one´s own race is really devestating for children growing up. Most ppl are very unaware and believe they are good. The more "good" ppl believe they are the blinder they are for what they really cause. Most international adoptees grows up with ppl who think they are very very good and the suffering international adoptees have to endure is beyond comprehension for anyone.
I do not understand how ppl can adopt interracialy when you are white. A white person do not know racism and the ignorance will cause even more pain upon a person that did not ask for being in that country or family. To be able to do that, one must believe one is above and know everything, some kind of narcissism.
