Schwalbe 2021 Nobby Nic & Big Betty Tire Review

  • Schwalbe recently redesigned the Nobby Nic and the Big Betty for 2021. I put both of these tires to the test on my local trails during some summer conditions here in the PNW. What I mainly look for in a tire is traction. Both in corners and while braking. Let's see how these tires perform!

    You do such a great job with your channel! Your content is always helpful and fun to watch, your video and production quality is fantastic, and you’ve got such an infectious personality, one can’t help but feel good while watching. Showing your husband give you a kiss then pop the bead on your tire was perfect...and really funny!
    I live in Park City and grew up in Logan - years ago (I’ve got kids your age!). It’s fun to see your channel grow, and I want to share it with some local mtn bike FB groups. Knowing the numbers etc., which of your videos attracts the most viewers and can help increases your subscriptions? Keep up the good work! You’re an awesome rider.

      Hey Brett - Thanks for your encouraging words! I’ve definitely been trying to improve the quality of my content and video. Yes it was a little sad but funny my husband was able to get the bead off first attempt. 😅 I would super appreciate you sharing a video. Any of my recent videos should work since they are probably the best quality or my Fender Test video has the most views and that’s a fun one too. Thanks for your support 🙂

    Little bit of advice for getting tyres off the bead. Get all of the air out (like you did) then just step on the tyre at the bottom of the rim and your bodyweight will push the tyre off the rim and into the channel when you lever the wheel with your arms.
    Loved the review as well btw 😃

    Awesome that may be my next combo to try. I ran the Magic Mary up front and the hans dampf in the rear and then ran both hans dampf front and rear...

    Great overview on the confidence of the Nobby Nic in the rear, I plan on trying out a Hans Dampf front in the soft super gravity casing as I'm 200lbs+ paired with a Nobby Nic blue speedgrip in the back for a bit quicker rolling trail/all mountain set-up both in 2.6 width

    Big Betty/Big Betty or Magic Mary/ Big Betty... Here the trails are mostly natural rooty rocky downhilly quick ones so the Hans Dampf would have a hard time... You're a very smooth rider. Good review. I am branching out on tires. Been riding Vittoria Mazza F and Martello R in the Trail casing. They do really well and resist cuts and puntucres well. I had a lot of punctures withe previous Schwalbe casings. Hoping the Super Trails are better. Have Magic Mary and Nobby Nic in Super Trail Addix Soft coming. Must have been a little defeating when you worked so hard to get that tire off and your hubby popped it right off. Enjoyed your review.

    Thanks for this review - it really helped me when choosing my tyres!. I've been riding an old mountain bike for over 30 years, and recently purchased 2 new mountain bikes for my wife and me with 29ers on them. The tyres that come as stock on them are great for cross country and road, but I wanted something more. We ride a mix of trail and cross country as well as some coastal riding on hard surfaces. I have been researching the Schwalbe 2021 range a lot, and arrived at the Nobby Nic to meet requirements as generally good all rounders, with a view to use Supertrail-Speedgrip 2.35" on the rear and Supertrail-Soft 2.35" on the front. The problem was that in the UK we can't seem to get NN in soft compound at the moment, so I thought I'd go for a more knobbly tread pattern up front that I could get hold of in soft. I didn't want to go for the classic Magic Mary, just as it's not ideal for hard surfaces. On watching your review I decided on a Big Betty Soft 2.4" for the front. Most of the documentation on the BB pattern does point towards rear, but your review and a few others also show good results on the front. After installing the NN rear and BB front as tubeless, I took my bike out yesterday on a varied climbing and descending trail (Gravel, tree roots, hard road, but mainly total mud). I am very impressed with this combo! The BB on front does throw the mud and the soft grip was excellent along with good rolling on hard surfaces. The NN held extremely well, and also threw the mud well. Both provided a much smoother ride over bumps with the grip I wanted, whilst not loosing much rolling. I am very happy with this choice. Thanks again!

    • @FifeFlow
      @FifeFlow  3 года назад

      Right on! I am glad the BB and NN worked out for you. They are some pretty great tires. I have been riding mine on a lot of rock lately in Nevada and they have been holding up well. Thanks for watching the review!

    The Betty is somewhat similar to a DHR II, and that also works really well up front, especially in sandy soils. It's what Brendog runs locally here in the Surrey Hills outside of winter. Swapping it to the back for winter makes a lot of sense. Personally I've been running a snakeskin Mary up front and a EXO+ DHR II rear in UK loamy mud (light casings since there are no rocks here), and it's a great winter combo, so the new Super Trial Betty will mean I no longer need to run mixed brands.

    • @FifeFlow
      @FifeFlow  3 года назад

      Those were my thoughts too with the DHR ll looking like the Betty. I have a couple other friends running the Mary and Betty combo now that it's a bit muddy and sloppy here and they are pleased with it!

    Great video really good advise my haibike came with no by nic 3.0 really wide/fat tyre and I hate them!!! I spend more time off my bike than on it as its really wet and muddy her in West Sussex England. This weekend I came off on slippery chalk as this is what the trails are near me!! But on my Trek ex 9 that I got second hand a few weeks ago it has continental trail Kings on front and back and I really feel planted and safe on it so I'm thinking I may put these on my Haibike. I really can't decide but I am drawn to trying the magic mary as heard lots of good things about these tyres!! Just be nice to ride and stay on😎😎 sometimes too much choice!!

      @FifeFlow  2 года назад

      I know tires are hard to find now days. Are you talking about a front or rear tire? a Nic is a little bit more of a summer tire but not the worst thing to run in the rear if you are desparte for a tire. The Hans D. would work too just try to get the softer compounds for the wet riding. It goes a long way. I have been riding a big betty front and rear (since again the mary is hard to find) and it has been working well! I hope this helps:)

    Thanks for some good input on the new Tyres! I typically ride more natural trails (more roots and rocks and less jumps/berms) and on my YT Jeffsy 29er I'm mostly happy with my Soft (Orange) Nobby Nic 2.6 up front and Speedgrip (blue) Nobby Nic 2.35 in the back. Most of my rides have transport sections and I'm usually out for 2-4 hours so the fast rolling speedgrip. I tend to ride the same combo all year around mostly cause I'm afraid of the drag penalty of a softer burlier tire...
    We're does the Big Betty sit in relation to Hans Dampf?
    Also, would you say the compound or the thread (or even the weight) makes the biggest difference on how hard it becomes to pedal?

    • @FifeFlow
      @FifeFlow  3 года назад +2

      I am with you Simon my favorite trails are the techy ones as well. I really liked the Nic and I bet it's great to run those front and rear. For me and where I am riding drag doesn't really seem to be a problem you just want as much traction as you can get. In Bellingham the trails are pretty steep so you want more stopping power and going fast isn't the issue it's being able to slow down to do certain features! I haven't actually tried the Hans Dampf. From looking at pictures I think the Betty's would clear better in muddy conditions, but it looks like the Hans has some good cornering knobs as well. I might have to get that tire sometime to try it out. I thought the Betty had good breaking traction and was trustworthy. It is not the fastest tire that's for certain so depending on where you're riding and your style of riding it might be worth it. I would recommend if you haven't yet try the Magic Mary it is like the Nobby Nic's older and more attractive sister. I love it for a front tire.

    Hey Danica! I just moved to Bellingham and have a Ripmo AF. I have Assegai front / Aggressor rear. I'm more of a "trail" rider who isn't looking to do anything overly aggressive. I like a lot of the XC trails on Galby with things like SST and Bob's down (I take B line still). I really want to explore Canada when the border opens, even trying whistler but taking it on easy on blue trails.
    Do you think the 2.6 Nobby Nic front and rear might be the right choice for me?

      @FifeFlow  3 года назад +1

      Hey William welcome to Bellingham! I haven't personally tried out the 2.6 version, but I have a friend that just loves the way they roll. I think as a trail rider that type of tire would be perfect. Canada is amazing. I also am looking forward to the border opening up!

    Nice informative video, You sure can ride that bike ;~}
    I run Mary Addix soft (orange stripe) 29 x 2.3 upfront, snakeskin casing (so last year), with cushcore pro for grip (2.35 comes up quite narrow in the Addix version compared to the old Trailstar, DT511 rim)
    Wondering how that setup compares [as it has the cushcore in] - to the purple stripe super trail version (or is it only SG for purple? then maybe that)
    Aggressor 2.5 WT rear DD casing.
    Like you I am looking forward to trying the 27.5 Betty rear, now the trails are slippy.
    No cushcore in the rear, so perhaps the SuperGravity casing this Winter

    • @FifeFlow
      @FifeFlow  3 года назад

      The purple only comes in the SG casing. For me personally I don’t need the SG casing on any of my tires especially with cushcore in the rear but I love the purple compound so I compromise :) It is just starting to rain here quite often so I am going to be switching up my tire set up to a Mary duo or a Mary and Betty!

    • @FifeFlow

      Also I forgot to add - I find that I can run slightly lower pressures with the trail casing and cushcore compared to the SG casing in the rear:)

      I would get an orange soft compound Magic Mary. It’s a really great grippy tire! And the orange compound will last a bit longer on rocks vs the purple.

      Sounds like your "shedding"them to pieces. I've ridden my NN 2,6 up front and 2,35 rear for a few seasons without tearing any side knobs. But heard more people complaining. Both of mine are in Speedgrip (blue) and I'm planning at getting soft Addix for the fall (and also take Mary on a first date). Curious if I'll rip any knobs with the soft compound. But I mostly have rounded (and potentially slippery) rocks where I ride so maybe soft (and ripable) knobs is s good thing here (in Sweden).

    Hi! I've been riding Nobby Nic 29x2.60 since 2018 and I need something new.
    I don't like the Nobby Nic at all, after the first mud puddle I'm driving around 3 kilos of mud per tire around with me. Could also have a little deeper knobs because with my PW-X engine lose traction on the mountain on the rear in the mud pretty quickly. Does anyone have an idea?
    Is Big Betty the right one for me?^^
