So many years ago I was told in homiletics lessons, don't condemn or belittle the congregation. Preaching for conviction is one thing preaching to condemn is another
Exactly. You could fully expect anyone singled out from the pulpit for special abuse to at the very least quit the congregation if not the entire denomination.
Some years ago our Minister said that he never expresses his own political views in the pulpit, because the congregation includes supporters of all political parties and none, but we are united in Christ.. He is a former Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.

Back in the ‘80s our rector was agitating for setting up bunkhouses for illegal immigrants in church undercrofts much as if we were obligated to adopt the entire population of any Central American country having a civil war. And then he would denounce dissenters from the pulpit but of course not by name. Singling out individuals for special abuse from the pulpit borders on insanity but of course Budde has more job security than Trump does so she gets to indulge herself to the nth degree. I quit the Episcopal Church to become a Buddhist. To me Christiainty equals endless torrents of verbal diarrhea emanating from the mouths of undisciplined pseudo priests.
Best analysis of ‘that sermon’ I’ve heard. Lots about unity, but what about unity in Christ? What about the Gospel message? And, as you say, basic rule of thumb for preaching a sermon: never single out one member of the congregation for criticism in front of all the others, whoever they are, at least if you want to have any sort of positive effect at all.
Clergy in the Anglican Tradition are brilliant at being cheerful and encouraging people in the rough roads of life. They're not so good at challenging people, 'weaponising' as you characterise it. No wonder God's frozen people in Europe and America remain largely frozen. I think the good Bishop challenged all of us.
Did you listen to how gentle she was in the way she spoke? A true woman of God, calling on the powerful to protect the vulnerable. A Christ like message, a brave woman, and an example to us all.
@catherinellewelyn-evans3693 Considering the power dynamics at play here, President Trump is the one in a precarious position. I am not a Rev like you but that doesn't stop me feeling the needto say this. While I agree with you about the transgender issue on a theological level (politically it's a very different matter), when it comes to the immigrants we have to ask WHY they are undocumented? If they have fled in without documentation it is not necessarily because they are banditos, it is often because the conditions for immigration are unfairly stringent towards them and have scant regard for the fact that they are often FLEEING from the very criminals Trump is so concerned about. As MEB pointed out, the majority of them are honest hard-working people and not simply there to sponge off hard-working US-born citizens. These matters need handling with grace and understanding and the wisdom of Solomon who arbitrated fairly between two harlots rather than banging on at them about how they shouldn't have been harlots in the first place. you begin by pointing out how divisive the sermon was; as a plea for unity, it has certainly not succeeded in that; but for her and her co-religionists, unity means agreement and conformity with them; humility means deference to them; tolerance means condemning the same things as them.
I suggest you listen to/read the whole sermon, not just the news article's selected gobbets; it was a call for unity in a divided country. Bishop Budde suggests there are three 'H' cornerstones for unity for leaders to remember- Honouring the inherent dignity of every person, Honesty in discourse and actions and Humility, that leaders have a duty to be servants too. I can't see anything wrong with that message, as each of these are Christian principles, and all are important for worldly leaders (whatever their political persuasion) to be reminded of as they take office. And as for your point that the Bishop shouldn't use the pulpit for mixing religion and politics, well Jesus wasn't afraid of criticizing the worldly (and religious) leaders and reminding them of the poor and afraid of his time, for there is inevitably an overlap between "politics" and "religion" in matters of social justice.
She could have added another H..... Honouring the laws of the country in which you reside. That would include not entering it by criminal means. Scripture is quite clear on obeying the law, and punishing those who break it.

At least she didn’t call Trump and Vance “white washed tombs” or refer to Maga as a “brood of vipers”. She proclaimed truth to power.
You are more concerned with political point scoring and Trump than you are with opposing the secular attacks against biblical teachings on sexuality and faith. But not by any means all of it. I've just seen that latest song I'm afraid! I'm convinced now that it's NOT the correct thing to be done! But sadly and with reluctance - I tend to suspect that it was incorrect! And forced to take a measured criticality of it!
I haven't entertained the whole thing lightly. There was a hope! Albeit a very long hope at the best! That it might have worked. However! I have to conclude that it may have some very considerable and serious ramifications along the way. I'm forced to agree with some of the more Orthodox portion of Churches that it was NOT correct. But figuratively unwise! This is a very reluctant accepting of this point but it has to be said. I have been lengthy in this - but I had to hold on to the hope that it might've worked. Unfortunately it's unlikely to.!
Is she wearing men's or women's clothing? Is the Biblical word for a female priest or bishop a priestess / bishopress? Most Biblical words are gendered. I don't see "vicars" in Scripture.
About scripture do we appreciate having Gods true Words and where we find them? Don’t know if you know Brandon but he does a tremendous work to the Glorie of God. I hope this will be a blessing to you Dan.

don't put d.j.t. on a pedestal, the air is too thin up there, he will pass out & fall off on his head ... also, these poor kids are influenced & scared by people with an ag.en.da ... I pray for the spirit of confusion to be chased off them ...
She has duping delight at the end and has not spoken the word of God according to the Bible
Your true colours show once again. You are more concerned about the fact she showed compassion for LGBTIQ people and that she’s a woman Bishop. You obviously have never read the Prophets, the Sermon on the Mount or the way Jesus spoke to the leaders of his day. At least she didn’t call Trump and Vance “white washed tombs” or refer to Maga as a “brood of vipers”. She proclaimed truth to power.
You are more concerned with political point scoring and Trump than you are with opposing the secular attacks against biblical teachings on sexuality and faith. You lot are the ones with the power, your worldview controls everything especially in the UK where preaching 2000 year old biblical traditions can get your arrested for 'hate'.
Hmmm that is one brave bishop . She is an inspiration to us all. I think she and the church will pay for it. Sorry rev Dan I think we are no longer aligned in our views. This woman is a saint (although non of us are catholic). So not possible.
This bishop looks like Albert Steptoe.
Well! Don't ask me to say - that Christ is a chip off the old block.
A terrible thing to say In God's house she better repent
Safeguarding should be a situation of just reporting that to the safeguarding representative in a church ! It should be the case is that a representative reports this to the Vicar and the PCC - Perhaps if it's wiser if this LLF thing is postponed until 2026. I suspect that it's likely to cause a difficulty. And that uncertainty has brought up this kind of some doubts.
I suspect it's likely to cause a difficulty.. understatement of the Century!
@@Doweunderstand6419 Sometimes understating it! Is a clear indicator that it could cause some profound complications and that's what I suspect! And I am somewhat concerned about it as well! I would prefer a further postponement to 2026 at least!
Jesus was crucified for challenging the powerful and supporting the vulnerable (whatever their label). Her message was a Christ like one and thousands of us applauded.
Given the media circuit she immediately went on, one could be forgiven for thinking it was all about the Bishop flaunting her woke credentials.
Please don’t.choose an evangelical. God bless
First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me
Pastor Martin Niemöller (opposition to the Nazi regime during the late 1930s)
Christ took every opportunity, as clergy should - to speak out against blatant, repugnant and evil behavior. I suspect that within a short time of Trump's presidency, as it descends into deeper levels of depravity - you will look back on this RUclips post with regret and shame.
Sadly, the Bible is the last frame of reference for this woke bishop. She imagines she understands things so much better now 😢😮
@@marcokitedon’t be unnecessarily nasty - anyone can pretend to be ordained - don’t hate like they hate 👍
How can you be a true Christian and not be woke. Christ is woke in his teachings, surely. Woke is a good and virtuous thing.

People thinking that simply referring to the Bible is 'nasty' is most of the problem. That's why the churches are packed full of false converts and most UK churches are run by atheists. Which by extension is why the west is in the state it is with the mass slaughter of infants, mutilating people, complete insanity denial of reality, the R gangs, etc.
False Prophet she should have prayed to god more
Unless she is stupid she knew how her words would be interpreted, it was for her own self promotion.
With all this safe-guarding, who's dictating it? The same state that helped cover up Jimmy Saville and the Grooming Gangs?
