Shimano ST EF51 and EF50 Overhaul

- In this video, I demonstrate the process of tearing down and reassembling both the Shimano ST-EF50 And ST-EF51 shift/brake lever assemblies. The two shifters are very similar, but I went ahead and overhauled both shifters.
Needed this video because I foolishly disassembled the unit without taking pictures of the innards first and when the springs for the Low shifter (inevitably) popped out and onto the floor, I couldn't remember how/where to put them back. I've taken stills - thank you!
You idiot. I'm definitely not here for exactly the same reason. Nope, definitely not.
Same here just wanted to change the gear cable. Didn't look how to do it, thought i would have to disassemble the whole thing. Sat there completely baffled after i'd done it not remembering how to reverse everything.
me too🥵
I wanted to replace my shifter but after watching this video I decided to clean it and now it works like new, thanks
Thank you so much there are so many people who are very thank full to you but they don't comment here this video save my 3000 indian rupee
Thanks for the video, I have the ST-EF51 the second one you worked on. Actually I was working on the left 3x shifter. For the other viewers that were asking about it from watching the right lever they are basically the same innards just less teeth since it is only 3x. Turns out the problem was when I got the bike about 2 years ago the round clear plastic cover with the 1,2,3 on it was cracked, probably from prior owner working on the bike upside down with handle bars and shifter on the ground. It took about 2 years of me riding it. Some of the plastic pieces had fallen into the inner mechanism and eventually worked their way in far enough and jammed it. But now it is all cleaned up, and lubed up. Next I might as well repeat on the right. Thankfully the clear plastic cover has not cracked on the right.
Mine is the same model, and 3x gear's high lever's spring got displaced. Do you know how can I repair it without replacing it??
Joey you have done it again. Many thanks 👍
You're welcome! Thanks for taking the time to leave feedback!
Great job! I don’t think I would venture that far!
Thank you!
I used to to fix mine. Had some knock off version and just interchanged parts and it worked well! Thanks for the video
nice video, like to add few thing which i noticed if Ur gear doesn't shift from 2nd to 3rd for front
when loading the gear which lock in with each gear make sure u load on the last gear ie; 3rd for front shiftier or last gear in rear shiftier, because the gear the spring tension work that way
@Joey Mesa: After I watched your video about tearing down and rebuilding the EF-40/41 combo shifters, I have an observation about the plate with the bent four fingers, that applies to any Shimano combo shifter: I think that those fingers are a stop plate to keep whatever from unwinding after you get it back together. Essentially, those fingers prevent the fastener from being unscrewed after the initial hard pressure of the springs has been released, and thus that plate acts like a stop screw on a derailleur or even the adjustment screw on the brake lever.
Knowing this, I recommend tightening things up just a smidge beyond what "tight" feels like, such as sixteenth of a turn on the hold-down bolt. Afterwards, lock the fingers down on the bolt, and then go through the range as the ratchet action is checked. When you do, the mechanism will self-adjust, kind of like car drum brakes, and have the proper clamping force for the whole mechanism.
How do you remove the brake levers pin on the ef51?
I have the same problem, idk😭
Thank you so much for this video ❤️❤️❤️❤️
is it possible to remove the brake lever itself? I have 2 exact same shifters but the new shifter has its brake lever broke and im trying to replace the lever itself with the old one.
I have the same problem
I'm going to try to disassemble my shifter because it just shift one and is dirty so I'm going to clean it thanks for the vid
Glad I could help! Hopefully you get your shifter sorted out and I appreciate you taking the time to leave feedback!!!

Very usefull and well explained procedure... Tanks a lot greetings from Colombia
Great video man!! I was looking for a tutorial on fixing old shimano shifters. I also have that kind of shifter on my old bike that i have been learning to repair myself hahaha.
Thanks Man, I finally fixed my FD shifter. Now, I need to buy a new cable.
Glad I could help

My front gear's high spring displaced, make a video how to put it into place
👍Very very nice bro 🔥 thank you 🙏
Welcome 👍
Really appreacited
You're welcome!
Thank you very much for making and uploading this video. I recently purchased a bike with the ST-EF51-7R shift/brake lever and noticed that when downshifting, the thumb lever would not return automatically, I have to pull it back manually. Thanks to this video, I was able to determine that the downshift return spring is missing entirely. I guess either somebody removed it before me or maybe it broke and somehow worked its way out. Seems broken springs are a fairly common occurrence with these. Would you know if it's possible to obtain replacement springs easily, or would it be easier to replace the entire assembly?
Pretty much any small internal parts are not available. These Shimano shifters are relatively inexpensive to replace, so generally, that's the path of least resistance. Thanks for taking the time for your comments and questions!
Thank you so much ... I already ordered the new pair of shifters, but ur video helped me to repair mine... Thanks a lot ❤️
You're welcome! Thanks for the feedback!
I got problem with the 3 speed shifter can't figure out the spring, it doesn't spring back
I've learned a lot from this video to be sincere. Could you get something on BOLIDS breaks please. My rear brake won't work despite everything I do. They're not worn out but they just can't work.
The 7 shifter on ST-EF51 doesn't have barrel adjuster. Do you know what part should be used to secure shifter cable housing into the shifter (in place of a barrel adjuster)? Mine is broke but couldn't seem to find the right replacement part.
Why no barrel adjuster on Right hand shifter?
Sir I'm from India ,,,in my front 3 speed SHIFTER the no.3 is not working what should I do? The wire is also right......
Do an assembly of the 3 gear shifter for these models pls
Working on it!
Can you remove the brake lever by any chance?
Exactly what I needed. No help in this video. It seems replacing a bent brake lever would be the most frequent repair.
I got the same problem
Can you do a video on overhauling shimano calipers? The ones with the small cartridge style bearing.
Sure. Are we talking about a mechanical disc caliper or a rim brake side pull type caliper?
@@JoeyMesa rim brake side pull. Like the br-r8000. My rear is sticky and sounds like it has grit inside it, but I'm a little anxious about taking it all apart to clean it.
is it possible to remove the brake lever from one of this brifters and if yes how?i dont want too buy new shifters separately
No
Hey mate put mine back together but no matter what I've tried it will not shift into 1st gear on the shifter.any ideas??
hi, can you help me disassemble Shiimano ST- EF51 3 speed. because my 3 speed only can push 2 step only. i think might be something problem inside, but i am worry if i open it, it night be totally damage because i have no experience. tq
How to take the spring in the brake levers?
If this works i swear to god ill subscribe
Bro thank you bro
You're welcome!
Nays👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😊
My handbrake broke can I replace it with a another one .Great video!
Unfortunately not. The brake levers on these shifters are permanently attached. You'll have to replace the entire assembly.
Yeah I also broke by hand brake
What I have to do if the left shifter is hard or can't hook from 2 to 3?
Thank you
Same
Check the limit screw adjustment on the front derailleur. It might need to be backed out or the cable tension may be too loose.
@@JoeyMesa I have also the same problem on the left shifter. It does not move. What can I do please? What is the limit screw adjustment, please? Could you explain this in a follow-up video? Would you recommend to spray the inside of the shifter with WD40 to remove the old grease? Thank you
if u r repairing the shiftier make sure u load the gear which is supposed the biggest that is, when putting the gear which is in the shape of sword make sure u put it in the last gear 3rd if its front sifter or 7,8,9 in rear sifter
It's owen....
That's all me!!!
The left pls
