I love when you do a negative review. It is very refreshing! I have spent 100's of $$$ on crap and use your reviews as a guide post to look at something a little closer before I pull the trigger.
I like to think of videos like this more as honest critiques of the product. When someone is selling something, I think you have the right to question it.
This is the only reviewer in all RUclips that shares what they actually think and not what the creators want the customer to think I like that you always share alternatives with us
Once again, I find that this channel provides the most honest appraisal of magic currently on offer. I wish there were more of this kind of agnostic, dispassionate, and thoughtful analysis, to counter a lot of well meaning, but counterproductive, boosterism.
What you should realize is that the counterproductive boosterism you mention are channels that are continually provided free magic products to produce advertisements on their 'review channels'. While it makes sense that consumers want to see the latest and greatest thing- It vexes me how they can put their trust in 'reviewers' who clearly have an understanding with magic companies to maintain the 'quid pro quo'.
I've got 2 sets of cards for my Shadow. 1 set are not folded. I use these to produce effects similar to this new/old product. Thanks David. I trust your opinion implicitly.
I believed the trailer was a full performance, spent the $45... and watched the training video...(and felt dupped that I had missed a lot) The video observations are spot on with every every every every observation. (nailed) with that said... It is still a cool trick! (angles are tough!)
Hi David, my thoughts exactly. I was a little ticked off at the glossing over of the equivoque requirement in the video (and commented to Vanishinginc as did others)....kinda like equivoque-ing the equivoque. And I also saw the hand issue and the court card issue. Nothing new to see here. Save your $45 bucks.
I like your reviews for 1 reason your honest and if you see something dodgy with the video selling the trick you point it out. Best reviewer by a mile and hope the magic rip offs think twice. If they sell genuine I've no problem but theres so many think it's OK just to lie to sell there sh!t. Good man 👍
Good episode. The world of Magic does not need another Kolossal Killer. ou do not need DB or MI cards to perform this effect. I personally love that moment when the volunteer is looking at the card and the audience hasn’t seen it yet. Priceless. Can’t do that with a DB. I really enjoy watching your reviews. I do think you could take it a little easy on people. I do not think that everyone who accepts a free product to review is bias. That is just simply lumping everybody together. Maybe, just do your review show and don’t worry about others. You have a good show and it provides a good service. Other magic review channels are different. There is room for everyone. Why not encourage your viewers to watch some of the reviewers who you do like? Make it more positive.
Check out my other reviews on my channel - The vast majority of my magic reviews are extremely positive. We can agree to disagree on the idea of free products. Reviewers that get free products are technically employees of magic companies.
I have never seen a reviewer that says “don’t buy”. They just keep praising the products and skim over the negatives like they are nothing. They also never mention alternative or similar products :(
Exactly just buy the shadow wallet and you get a peek facility too. Do you have any plans to review the new Cheetah index? Be interested to know how it compares to the original version.
Yea, I'm not a fan of Mark Lemon, I can't think of anything he's done that impressed me. I know the old maxim goes "If you want new magic (or mentalism in his case) look in old books" but Mark really took that to heart and lives by it. If he has done anything original, can his fans please list it, I'm happy to be proven wrong, but I don't recall anything groundbreaking he's done.
I agree that I've never found his stuff to be all that and a bag of chips. Case in point: Watch the Royal Road to Mentalism download series that he did with Peter Turner. I don't know what the story was there with their break with Ellusionist, but the routines, taken right out of Royal Road to Card Magic, are so half-hearted, it's sad. Actually, I sometimes use Lemon's little book test, To the Point, which is nice, but the method also isn't original.
David’s reasons are solid everyone knows how an old method works. That doesn’t stop newbies or people like me supporting the creator as I always will. That doesn’t me mean I have to because I’m fooled I just want to support a creator I respect and like. Just like I do David we are not all skint I think in this world we are allowed to make our own choices. I certainly will continue to do so. Kudos to you both of you Gaz 😊ps the method is old to me but new to young magicians expecting a miracle, being disappointed but producing that miracle to our target lay audience, the end goal is reached. There are better methods out there imho
It's a terrific effect and never ceases to amaze folks, but this is a case of "old wine in a new bottle (or envelope)." When I saw the trailer, I thought okay, he's using Max Maven's favorite gimmick, but it's a gimmick that makes the revelation uninspectable. I'll stick with my Infinity Wallet, where I can hand folks the revelation to examine. I've carried the Infinity as my EDC mainly for this effect alone and have done so for about a decade now. I'm tough on wallets; when it wears out, I buy another. I'm on wallet number three. :)
Wow!! Wallet #3.... Love your expression "Old wine in a new bottle". Really wish magicians brought more original thought to the market. Reminds me of Sadowitz complaining about minor variations of effects.
Thank you for your thoughtful insights. I'm glad you didn't equivocate on your thoughts. Certainly an analysis I'll index to revisit, maybe even keep a reference to it in my wallet. I do wonder, if I took the envelope to the ballgame, how many outs I might get to see and whether Player Tyvek may be batting.
Well said Sir. If you get any backlash from your comments remember you only told the truth which helps your subscribers know the facts and thats the very reason your channel is called 'Unbiased'
Careful. You are going to have the full force of the British Magic Mafia come down upon you, or as I like to refer to them, the Human Centipede of Magic.
Nice heads up and absolutely not a pan of the product. The effects in Lemon's hands looks good and is impressive. I see why someone might be interested in purchasing this, but I don't think it's for me either. One of the advantages to using a wallet would be that you could construct the effect so you could hand out the card when you were done.
I already own inferno. Is shadow wallet used to eliminate the sleights? Or to have the cards unfolded? Or just as way to remember which suit is where? Is Shadow Wallet the only one that can do this effect?
There is no sleight of hand with the Shadow wallet. There are other versions of this effect that exist like Mark Elsdon On the Mark. Watch my Top 5 thought of Card in wallet review. BTW… I have purchased gaffed assortment decks on eBay that have the necessary gaff cards to do this type of effect. Send me an email if you want to discuss further!
I love David’s reviews always honest from his point of view. What more would you want? An opinion that wasn’t his point of view? I certainly wouldn’t that’s why I check and subscribe to his channel. I know exactly how this works just by watching the trailer and knowing what’s possible with every method like this that exists. I may buy it to support Mark because I think he has some wonderful ideas but I don’t need too because I understand the method. I can understand how valuable David’s channel is to me but it won’t affect me in any shape or form from supporting Mark. Nearly every effect is based on an old method but I still think David and the likes of me should and will continue to voice our own opinions on the effect. Otherwise review shows will just become commercials for creators and that’s not right in my opinion of course Gaz 😊
I happen to find your review while considering purchasing PTSD. I'm a Magicorthodoxy fan and usually rely on David's reviews before making a magic purchasing. Initially, I was taken back that you hadn't even purchased PTSD. However, after listening to your comments and experience I think you did a good job of "dissecting" the gimmick and reminded me of some of the wallets I already own. So, I did subscribe to your channel and will definitely look forward to more of you wisdom and experience to save me $45. Thank you. ED
You don’t have to purchase an effect to realize exactly how it works. A friend confirmed to me that all my ideas were spot on and the equivoke technique they boast is so good is definitely not worth the price of this. Message me if you want to know more.s
In answer to cafe comments no one needs this other than newbies. Even then if do you your homework like we used to do, you will find better versions. If you want no homework buy this as Mark deserves it for his great input to our art imo Gaz 😊 ps I remember the days when we had a mind of our own and gave our honest opinion like David and I do without people who have zero knowledge on the history of magic even answering. Quite embarrassing these days imho
Still $45 for an envelope and a couple of gimmicked cards to do the same old equivoque is a bridge too far! $15-$20 seems much more appropriate. It would be different if there was something new created.
There is a little twist to the equivoque that adds a different principle that I have never seen someone do with this kind of equivoque. I’m going to add this method to my presentation of B’Wave. I’m happy with this purchase for this ruse alone. It makes sense why they wouldn’t show it in the trailer because it’s one of the key additive factors that differentiates this product from similar methods. I don’t like the “improvement” to the cards’ artwork. I understand the reasoning, but I don’t think it’s worth the tradeoff. All in all, I’m happy with this because of the equivoque ruse and the inspiration that the envelope gave me for a way to present B’Wave with an apparent free choice of any card with only two moments of equivocation.
Thank you for bringing this product to my attention. I like this plot, so I will hold out and try and find some reviews. I am not writing this off yet.
That's a good idea. While this definitely a workable version - It also has some drawbacks that other versions won't have - Example, the envelope becomes a problem by itself unless you can flash it to show there are no other cards. Doesn't matter how "thin" it looks. My spectators seeing something coming out of an envelope are going to want to look in the envelope to make sure nothing else is in there, unless I can flash it empty. Ultimately, you have to decide what's best for you.
You didn't learn your lesson about reviewing something you've never had in your hands? I'm not defending the trick, but dude, why do you do this? You shouldn't be bagging on something you've never experienced. Why not talk about things you know? Not enough material? How can you build any credibility if you review things you have never touched? Yeah, you said it's not a review. But it is. It's like an automotive reporter reviewing a car he's never driven. It's senseless, destroys your credibility, and is offensive to the creator. Is this what you want to be known for? It is the reputation you are building.
Have you even watched the video? He might have not bought it but he knows how it works and has exactly the same effect. And other similar ones as well.
I understand your viewpoint but at the same point you have a trick with a trailer that looks perfect but then the ad copy states there is a one stage of equivoque.....🤔 Anyone that's been in magic a while knows what is going on here and it's fine to have an opinion especially with misleading trailers. If this was a $20 trick it might be ok but $45 definitely feels a little steep for what is most likely going to be an envelope, 6 DBs and a restriction in choice at the beginning that limits choice to court cards. Only interesting thing to me here is how clever that one stage is, but if it's just "imagine the court cards in one pile and the numbers in the other then pick a pile and place in the case" then this would be a waste of $45 for me
This is my favorite series that you do. Anti-hype is very much needed and I don't know of anyone else doing it besides you.
Gotta keep it real on this channel!

Another reason is the poor judgement of naming the trick after a mental illness. (With a brain-shaped bomb, in fact.)
It sure is.

Very much in alignment with my thoughts when I watched the trailer. Will definitely be sticking with my Shadow Wallet.
