I doubt that Marco has the manpower to offer what Pocket Casts offers, as he is alone, but on PC works about 8 people (if the article was correct where I read it). But still Marcos Overcast is cheaper. PocketCasts is quite expensive for newcomers. If I wouldn’t be old user and having “Old User Price” I wouldn’t pay 40+ USD/EUR for a podcast app. In that case Overcast would be my choice.
Great and thorough video. I followed you from PC to Apple last time, and will definetly follow with you back now. Pocket casts is just so much more fun and easy to use
Even though Apple Podcasts mostly works for me, I really want to give Pocket Casts a try. It seems to make more sense and has a lot of great features that could really improve my podcast listening experience. Many stuff that I haven’t thought of before but makes sense when you mention it. Thank you, Stephen, for the great video!
The one thing I find missing from this overview is which features in pocket casts are tied to a subscription. For example, bookmarking requires a subscription while a whole lot of other features are available for free. Great overview!
Pocketcasts has the best CarPlay app, allowing chapter selection and marking podcasts as pkayed. There is no CarPlay chapter support with Apple Podcasts
Stephen - Agreed here with Pocket Casts being the better choice. However, what is your opinion on the sound quality of Pocket Casts compared to Overcast? I did volume boost on both but I feel that Overcast’s sound quality is more rich and less tinny.
I switched from Apple to Snipd as it allows me to create a snapshots that resonates and pass to Notion. Pocket cast has very interesting functionality and I would try it out.
@@beardfm filters is one thing, but having folders just like in the finder where you manually put episodes is something that makes me stick to overcast
Thanks! Queue managing in Apple Podcasts is a nightmare. But choosing between pocket casts and overcast, as far as I found, there’s no much difference, so I’d choose overcast because It’s free. I’ll give PC another chance, maybe I’ve missed some advantages over overcast. Thank you for this video 🙏
Unfortunately that's not something we can do. I would have to have an entire RSS feed dedicated to the video version, and most viewers tune in on RUclips anyway. I've been adding the video version to Spotify though!
Queuing is SO powerful in Pocket Casts. Even with minor automation rules, my queue of podcasts is exactly in the order I want; news auto-added up top, variety and the rest auto-added to the bottom, and tweaking the order or settings is so quick. I literally do not have to choose what to listen to because I already did. I just open the app and press play.
Though, it's not releted to the topic of the video. But, could you help me with this, please? I am still new to Apple & yesterday only I opted for an iCloud+ subscription with a 200 GB plan and I have also added my sister via family-sharing. My query is that my sister was already been using the individual plan (50GB). So, after joining the shared plan does her previous individual plan auto-cancelled or do we have to do it manually? If so, then how?
$40 to unlock the full functionality of Pocketcasts is a bit of a high ask, even with the issues Apple Podcasts has. The transcripts feature is also a strong pull for me
@@mariotriforce how do you know? Where can I see this fact, that it’s upcoming? Thanks. And it has to be on the FREE version. Or actually, I paid for this Pocket Casts one time. So it’s not free. But I don’t wanna pay for the damn subscription just to get that stupid feature that I want.
Both are very close in my opinion, but the feature that keeps bringing me back to pocketcasts is episode art support for 3rd party premium rss feeds (I.e. Patreon, Memberful, etc.). Apple Podcasts doesn’t support this, even though it supports episode art for free feeds you subscribe to from within the app.
I love PocketCasts, but frequently have issues where playback skips back randomly or the episode is cut off early. Seems to be a well known problem for a few years now. Have you had any similar issues?
The biggest frustration I have with Apple Podcasts is that the Browse section prioritizes German podcasts as I am German, even though my iPhone language and preferred content are in English. This lack of a simple option to switch the recommendations to another region is incredibly annoying. The same goes for the Books app, by the way
I prefer overcast since it gives free (with non intrusive podcast ads which I don’t mind) Apple Watch support, pocket cast doesn’t. But I like everything else about it. I have a special hate for Apple Podcasts app.
Why didn’t you make a big distinction that the pre-selecting chapters is for the paid version only. Or the special paid version. I paid for Pocket Casts and they’re not letting me use that feature. Paying $20 a year is ridiculous.
Wasn't aware it was a paid feature. I bought Pocket Casts years ago when it first came out so unsure what's behind a paywall. Also, that information is likely to change over time so I typically don't mention prices, etc.
@@beardfm I don’t know if you want to consider this a paid version or not, but it’s called Pocket Casts plus. So it’s like you have to pay for the damn thing twice. Like you, I paid for pocket cash years ago. But now this feature I want is probably only gonna be in the plus.
Apple Podcasts is pretty, but annoying to navigate. I like Overcasts, but if one has a large library, it starts lagging and crashing. I will try Pocket Casts next.
Well, up next on the for you page is no queue. It’s a recommendation what you could listen next, by machine learning l, depending on the device. When you are playing a playlist, you have continuous playing in the queue. But then you can add episodes in between. That’s why, it’s built like this. Once you know it, it’s easy. But: it’s super hard to understand at the beginning. 😅 it’s actually sophisticated, but probably just 10 % of the hardcore user do understand that.
My biggest problem: I don’t know what I want to listen tomorrow. So Apple podcast with the flexible queue works better for me. It’s like Netflix, I also not create a queue what I want to listen in the next 2 weeks. I just play. And that’s how Apple Podcasts works. If you like Organisation, in my opinion Apple Podcast is not the right app. It’s more for the “I like sometimes podcasts” user.
At this point Apple Podcasts is just the transcript add-on to Pocket Casts, for when I need to find something specific in an episode lol (Until PC inevitably adds transcripts too!)
I thought the new iOS 17.xx shortcut actions brought you back to Apple Podcasts? 😂😂 Apple Podcasts queue is simple. Guarantee a majority of your paid subs probably come from Apple Podcasts. Don’t give up…we need continued Apple Podcasts shortcuts. 😊
haha they did initially! But I've lost the last 10 minutes of too many episodes in Apple Podcasts because I wanted to play a more recent release. And the queue management is just too cumbersome. I'll still keep my eye on it and see if iOS 18 sneaks in any improvements!
@@beardfm For me it is a game changer to capture notes: DoubleClick with my airpods creates a snip => Transcription (!!!) will be imported directly to my readwise account => Readwise account sync with Obsidian. So I have a note directly out of the podcast itself!
It’s not a good experience at all on RUclips. It’s not made with podcast in mind. Get a real experience and get a podcast app that superior like Pocket Casts. Listening to podcasts on RUclips is like going to get milk at the grocery store in a dump truck. It’s just not perfect for the job.
I went through the same switch, the way Apple handles the queue is a dealbreaker.
Such a shame, cause I love the design!
Excellent video. When Marco releases a new Overcast later this year/early next year - I’d love to see a comparison video like this one. Thx!
I doubt that Marco has the manpower to offer what Pocket Casts offers, as he is alone, but on PC works about 8 people (if the article was correct where I read it). I'm looking forward to trying it and will certainly review!
Great and thorough video. I followed you from PC to Apple last time, and will definetly follow with you back now. Pocket casts is just so much more fun and easy to use
And the queue management is so solid! That's the biggest hurdle for me.
great overview thank you! frustrated with Apple podcast app lately so looking for an alternative
I had the same experience. Tried Apple Podcasts but went back to PocketCasts. More features and more usable once you get over the learning curve.
Shame, better queue management in Apple Podcasts and that would probably be enough to get me back
I keep switching back and forth you just convinced me to go back to Pocketcasts lol
haha I've been going back and forth too, but Pocket Casts wins out this time...

I should have mentioned for sure, appreciate it though!
What about CarPlay? Does one have an advantage when connected to your vehicle?
Good question, would love to know too
Pocketcasts has the best CarPlay app, allowing chapter selection and marking podcasts as pkayed. There is no CarPlay chapter support with Apple Podcasts
CarPlay is pretty on par feature wise, but the up next queue is better in Pocket Casts for the reasons mentioned.
That's true! Apple Podcasts used to have chapter support but for some reason iOS 17 broke that. The team is aware but it hasn't been fixed yet.
Stephen - Agreed here with Pocket Casts being the better choice. However, what is your opinion on the sound quality of Pocket Casts compared to Overcast? I did volume boost on both but I feel that Overcast’s sound quality is more rich and less tinny.
Overcast likely has better sound quality, Marco is an audiophile in that way. But I typically don't use volume boost in either app.
I switched from Apple to Snipd as it allows me to create a snapshots that resonates and pass to Notion. Pocket cast has very interesting functionality and I would try it out.
Overcast has the big advantage to allow to create folders and add podcast episodes either automatically for a podcast feed, or one episode only.
I believe you can do that with Filters in Pocket Casts, but not 100% Will have to do a comparison with Overcast!
@@beardfm filters is one thing, but having folders just like in the finder where you manually put episodes is something that makes me stick to overcast
Pocketcasts does have folders but only as part of their subscription.

It’s pretty great

Yeah, I love that they're doing so much for podcasts in general, but the podcast UI leaves some to be desired.
Whenever I intend to switch from Pocketcast to Apple Podcasts, I visit your channel, watch the videos, and then return to Pocketcast.
haha well thanks for keep coming back. When and if things change again, I'll cover it 😉
I agree pocket cast is a better experience. I’m trying Castro and I’m liking it very much.
A new option I'm trying out is Snipd, so far really good.
You're the second to mention...may have to try
I want to use Apple Podcasts so bad, but I just can;t figure out a way to replicate the way I use Overcast (which is pretty simple) in there.
Apple Podcasts still lacks compared to Overcast and Pocket Casts (but stay tuned cause I have an in-depth review of Overcast coming tomorrow!)
Can’t wait to see pocketcast vs overcast
Pocket Casts needs that cool feature that Overcast has had for years where you can grab a small section of audio and send it to somebody
Yes, that's a big Overcast advantage
That's comeing soon to pocketcasts

100% agree man, me too for Portuguese.
if we already have an app widget available, and if I want to run/open that specific app widget by "back tap". Can we do it by using a shortcut??
You can program a specific shortcut to a back tap in addition to having the widget, is that what you mean?
My biggest pet peeve with apple podcasts, is they have no way to customise the grid layout. The 2 icon wide look is bollocks.
True, more options would be great
