Just found my new favorite channel. Subscribed! I love how you interact with the audience, that's unique and fun. I love all things arcade cabs, grew up in the 80s, and my room is a mini arcade, arcade1ups though, but nostalgic nonetheless. Popeye is classic! Look forward to watching more! Already watched the Pac Man and class of 81 videos. Great content, keep it up!

Joe, you can't let whateever Olive Oyl throws out sink to the bottom of the screen. Once that happens, the round ends and you lose a life. Just look at the bottom and see the broken heart down that. That's what Olive is all unhappy about.
Oh, and as a bit of trivia, Donkey Kong was the original Popeye game but King Features wanted too much money for the characters, so Brutus became Kong, Popeye became jumpman, and the girl became Pauline. Once DK was a smash hit, Nintendo was able to negotiate a better price and use the characters.

Speaking of caps, a neighbor recently tossed 6 desktop computers and a laptop. I recognized one machine since I had replaced the motherboard in it. Well, several capacitors vented out and others were dented. So that's time for a recapping. On a PC, it isn't always easy to replace them due to ground planes. In that case, you use a preheater or heat gun with the soldering iron.
In computers, it's sometimes a good idea to do destructive cap removal. Like on the newer solid and hybrid caps, some will take pliers, push down, and turn in order to prevent lifted traces. Then they deal with removing the leads. Adrian Black does it that way.
Capacitor choice can be complex at times. On old radios, they used mica capacitors in the RF section, and it is a challenge to find replacements. So you leave those unless you have "silver mica disease." You don't want to throw out the alignment so far that you cannot ever track it properly, or you are in another band entirely and missing some of the intended band. For other caps in such an old unit, nearly anything is better than what is there.
As for the new stuff like hybrids and solids, they have tradeoffs. If you need extreme temps (particularly cold), solids are good, but if you need "self-healing," then you'd want standard electrolytics or hybrids. And in some designs where electrolytics or hybrids are used, high-quality ceramics would be a better choice, particularly if cleaning up a board from corrosion/leakage. (I mean physical leakage here, not ESR or unintended conductivity.) On fixing an old Mac and changing surface mount caps, you are often better off removing the hybrid caps or electrolytics and using ceramic equivalents that will fit the pads. Then you never have to worry about them exploding or leaking electrolyte juice again. The electrolyte used in those is conductive and if a board doesn't work after changing those, it may need to be washed to remove what leaked onto the board.

Georgia just cracked down on arcade licenses. The Pinball Palace used to not pay license fees by charging a flat fee to play all day and having the games on free play but the state told them they need to now license all their machines now. Such BS. I wouldn't want that headache.

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  3 месяца назад +6

I knew that was eventually coming. Georgia is BAD about the licenses I'll have to tell my story in a video some day about that.
I knew eventually though they were going to close that loophole. It's probably not even the law, it's just the Georgia revenue guys throwing their weight around...

  • @meltysquirrel2919

Yikes on the licensing price there! I just looked up Phoenix out of curiosity and it is $1.50 each month for each machine! ($3 minimum if you only have 1 machine).
🤫 Not to give 'em any ideas but, since coin counters are a thing, why isn't it a simple registration plus a percentage like other taxes?
Cool that you got those machines since you know how to fix 'em so their new owner will be good-to-go for years of fun! 😎 If I got one there's a good chance it would end up being a "future project" for an indefinite but looooong time! 😂

@@chadhartsees it got me curious as i live out in Nebraska and see at least some arcade games here and there. Nebraska got rid of the $250 fee in the year 2000 but you still have to register said machines yearly for a $0 fee, the only fee still in effect is an occupation fee per machine that was reduced in 2000 to $25 per year but you get a discount if the machine goes into operation after July 1st.

The hardware was very atypical of Nintendo at the time. It has no ASICs or expensive ECL logic. It even uses an AY-3-8910 for sound. It does, however, have a bunch of bipolar ROM/RAM in it, including a couple of special RAM chips which are extremely difficult to source/replace.

When a heart (level 1) a music note (level 2) or one of the letters that spell HELP (level 3) reaches the bottom of the screen, that is when the music changes. It is to let you know that you need to get the heart. music note, or letter quick. As you saw, when the heart sank too low, it broke in half and Olive was reading you the riot act Preventing this from happening is one of the many challenges of the game.

Way back when Popeye was a side character in the vintage Betty Boop cartoons before becoming a mainstream character with his own line of cartoons. Mae Questel voiced Betty Boop and was the original voice for Oilve Oyl. Mae reprised her role as Betty in the film Who Framed Roger Rabbit. The last thing Mae did before her passing was in the Movie National Lampoons Christmas Vacation as Aunt Bethany.
As for the arcade game, Miyamoto-san wanted Popeye to be his first and have the gameplay a lot like Donkey Kong, but at the time he was unable to obtain the rights. This is when he created Donkey Kong. There is a story behind that Big Ape that if it wasn't for Nintendo's lawyer at the time finding just one little flaw in Universal Studios' lawsuit, , Donkey Kong would not exist today.

Though I didn't chop anything up so I still have Popeye in a box and a quick flip of the monitor and a quick swap of the Power Supply I could play Popeye again.

The more of the original parts you can keep, the better it is, in my opinion. As long as it isn't falling apart, but hey even falling apart unmodified machines can still carry more value compared to some machines with blatent external after-market replacement bits. Like replacing a original console shell with a cheap looking transparent shell.

Re: Arcade game licenses, were conversion kits and multi-game systems like Neo-Geo MVS a way to get new games into the arcade without having to pay for another license, since you mentioned they were purchased for specific machines and couldn't be rotated?

A lot of times, folks only change what is involved in HV, PSU, and deflection. Other caps don't take as much of a beating.
Speaking of PSU, I've had a tech tell me that sometimes they require a matched set in a switching PSU or the circuit may refuse to oscillate. I've never encountered that.
And washing PCBs is more for specialized problems such as corrosion and insect infestation.

I don't think you asked in the video about whether the name should be Brutus or Bluto.
Nintendo used the name Brutus for the bearded miscreant.
As to whether both names applied to the same person, this isn't actually true. According to a 1980s comic they were two separate people.
Interestingly, the same comic gave Popeye's real name. One of the best pieces of trivia of 20th century culture.

The "service outlet" inside the arcade cabinet is NOT isolated mostly, why is this "service outlet" isolated using an isolation transformer? If you look on the schematics of most pinball games and arcade games the Service outlets are on the primary side of the transformer is its NOT isolated

Look at a Nintendo Schematic, Totally different ball game

@@LyonsArcade To bad you didn't show the schematic on the video because I'm curious to see it now to learn from it. That is unusual that Nintendo would put the service outlet AFTER the isolation transformer. Its call a Service Outlet or a Monitor outlet?

🤔 Did they do that so the outlet inside the machine could always be the same voltage as Japan uses two different voltages depending on which part of the country? A little different hookup in any case! 🙂
