I've loved donkeys since I was a kid. I've always heard they are the best guard animals for livestock. I'm glad they are being put to use rather than being culled.
As a guard against wild dogs you couldn't do much better than a donkey, they hate dogs. I've had donkeys and my dog learnt very quickly not to go in the paddock.
I grew up in the far north of South Australia, my grandparents kept Donkeys to keep the Dingoes awsy from the Sheep, and Peacocks with Guinea Fowl to keep the Snakes under control.
They are concerned about the stress and suffering, and sure a lengthy capture and transport process means more stress and thus suffering, but animals don't just want to avoid suffering, they want to live. I'm sure if you asked the donkeys, they'd prefer capture to death. I'm all for shooting and culling invasive species, but if people want them and don't release them again, even better. Just get them off the land.
he wasnt very sure which way was actually more humane, he had no statistics or studies to quote, but surprisingly leant towards culling them. didnt expect that
Paisano's Roost Farm, Southern New Mexico: We have a pair of guard donkeys for our flock of American Blackbelly Sheep. No losses to coyotes since the arrival of our donkeys. Before the donkeys, lost 3 sheep. Previous owners lost lost of livestock to coyotes and feral dogs. We will always have donkeys with our sheep.
I've seen a donkey kill a coyote after some goats and then carry it around rotting for days as a trophy. The donkey was offended when the owner finally took the coyote away and threw it away over the fence. They don't play.
@@TheJewel006 He probably belongs to PETA - they believe that animals are better off dead than as pets. Never surrender an animal to a PETA 'shelter' - it will be killed before you walk out the door.
BINGO! Exactly right. What makes it SUCH a win-win-win is A) LOTS livestock will be saved; B) Slews of donkeys would have been tragically culled/killed if not rounded up; C) man and his family manage it and have turned it into a business. BRILLIANT! I tell ya this, the donkey is THE most versatile/useful animal there is (even over a dog), and while historically they've spent their lives around ppl, they are also EXTREMELY formidable animals. I'm guessing these Aussies know dingos would be wise to stay away from a donkey, because donkeys are VERY smart, and they know they can weaponize those lethal rear kicks. One solid shot to a dingo's head and it's lights out for the dingo. Horses will generally flee from conflict, whereas a donkey stands its ground and will fight.
Blessed is a bit of a stretch especially when we have feral horses camels cats rabbits cats and dogs and eggs as well killing all of our nativeand with constant drought coupled with fires it's not exactly accurate lol
I live on a side road about 40 miles out of Kingston, Ontario - it's farm country and forests and animals, including a pack of coyotes, some coywolves, a resident bobcat and a few other predators. Everyone I know out here who has any livestock or poultry also has one or two donkeys on their land and it's very rare to hear of anyone ever losing an animal or a bird. Donkeys take their work very seriously...
In Hawaii we had the same type of donkeys with the band of darker color over the shoulder. They were originally brought in to haul sugar cane and then survived feral in the driest area in all of Oceania. They started to encroach on a town so a local vet arranged to have them rounded up and given to farmers and gentleman farmers. I sometimes fed a pair of them who ate back invasive bamboo. They can have funny personalities and noisily demanding for their supplemental food! The same vet has a horse from the Secretariat line. That horse was paired with one of the local wild horses in an agricultural Valley. The owner affectionately calls the offspring his taro bred. Taro is used to make poi a Hawaii staple food.
I love donkeys. Coolest animal around. Australia has a right to protect its wildlife, so if someone doesn’t capture them without abusing them, they will be shot. I get it, I just hope the authorities have a little patience and let people like these try. Good on these people. Best of luck.
Donkeys and Goats....the toughest animals in Aussie. And I've got the scars to prove it. That guy is selling those animals. He is not a liar, he just bends it a bit.
Wild dogs, wild cats, wild bunnies, wild camels, wild horses, wild boars, wild cattle, wild goats, wild people is there an end to this or is every thing that walks in 4 legs in Australia considered ferral ?
In the Southwest States in the U.S. you can adopt a feral donkey from the Bureau of Land Management. Prove you can care for it, and it's $100 for fees.
Well, correct if I'm wrong but if every non-native animal that roams free and destroys the native flora & fauna is classed as a feral. Well, doesn't that make us ferals as well?
Never seen a big animal like a donkey sit down when I tried to load them. Couldn’t move him up. Old jackaroo with me lit a fire under him and that got him moving. Tough as nails those buggers.

Surely a pack of dingoes could bring down even an adult donkey? And why don’t the US bring back wolves and cougars into states affected by wild burros?
I've watched donkeys rip packs of dogs to pieces. 5 dogs don't stand a chance against a group of donkeys. They're pretty fucking metal. I live in wyoming where there are wolves and ranchers use Donkeys and mules to protect their horses and cattle from wolves and coyotes. I've heard of mules killing mountain lions, of course the mule was mortally wounded, but he did his job and protected the herd. Once animals like horses, donkeys, and mules figure out how to kill dogs, they start doing it for fun. I'm working right now with a horse who's favorite hobby is killing dogs. He's killed two strays and 3 of his owners own dogs. He started with it when he kept getting attacked and he just never stopped. Even the wolves here in Wy leave even the domestic horses alone, it's much easier to kill a cow or a sheep. They won't fight back.
@2:24, is the lady in pink standing beside the donkey, or right behind it? Whatever the angle is, you should never stand that close behind hind legs of a highly stressed animal, let alone a wild donkey.
Why aren't they being used to protect sheep? They do this in the US and it works well. Donkeys hate dogs, coyotes and foxes. They kill the canines. They should be a resource. They are also very sweet.

Everything is out of control in Australia!

I've never seen a herd of feral donkeys. Amazing.
Look at Trump family no difference !
Feeding a feral donkey beer, while talking about saving them, on national TV, hahahahaha, only in Australia.
haha funny. Apparently horses love the taste too as it tastes similar to grains in horse feed.
For real
I’m an Aussie.. I don’t see how a donkey could be replaced with a working horse, who is made for mustering and riding and all that.. but whatever.
I noticed that too! It's okay though as long as the Donkey gets his 6 Pack!
There’s always a wowser somewhere ready to complain about life on the land...
I love how the RSPCA says a bullet is better than a pat and a stubby.
Even if it's a xxxx gold.
I could not think of a better life
@ Angus Meads, RSPCA will ruin all rural life if we let them

He gave the donkey some beer lmfao
Typical Aussie 😂
There is a lot the US and Australia can learn from each other when it comes to managing equids, and so much that is similar.
RSPCA said what? I'd much rather a REALLY bad day then a good life, than a bullet and NO life!
And a beer don’t forget
This way the donkeys live and everyone has a story to tell.
That's an amazing outcome. RSPCA Says shoot em! Remember that next time your choosing an RSPCA approved product.
