      Sal, did you notice that the tug April Moran is always leading? Odd, as the tugs seem to be near-identical mechanically. Don't know much about tugs, but the noted specs seem identical. Owner/operator preference?

      GMT - 4 during US daylight savings time (EDT), GMT - 5 during US standard time (EST). So you were right depending on the time of the year. But sunrise is always too early without coffee!

    As a retired merchant mariner I highly appreciate how you take the stand for the crew on board the Dali. Hope they are able to return to their families as soon as possible!

      Can you tell me why the emergency diesels on Dali were not running "just in case" when they knew the main power plant was having issues??? Also, why can they use tugs now and they couldn't have tugs escort the dali for the same reason? This seems like a lot of cascading negligence to me.

      @@user-ut6ji8my2h All asked and answered previously, by Sal and others. But the tug issue is simple: money. And many thousands of ships have gone under that bridge without incident.

      Edit: it appears I was attempting to respond to a troll rather than the top level comment. I'm leaving my original unedited reply below all the same.
      I'll answer your questions about the tugs, but I'm afraid I simply lack the necessary knowledge to give a good faith answer on any of your other questions.
      Because the tugs typically are disengaged quite a bit prior to where it ultimately lost power. Why would this be any different?
      In further defense of the crew, the pilots, and the tugs; the Dali indeed put out a call to try to get tugs back to it ASAP once problems started.

      Until the investigation is complete the crew should be held. They are responsible for the deaths and damage.

      @@Humanity_Hope_ I'll let others who know better than I do answer, but short answer as far as I'm aware is the crew is in otherwise good spirits as far as I'm aware and is receiving semi regular aid.
      Unfortunately the crew of the Dali does not have the visas to depart the vessel, so they functionally must stay put aboard the Dali.

    I was a port chaplain based in Aberdeen Scotland for over 20 years before I retired and the MAIB (UK) carried out many investigations, but they never treated seafarers the way the FBI treated (allegedly?) the seafarers involved in any incident.
    Well done Sal for highlighting this injustice!

    It's hard to comprehend the fact that the Dali is about half the size of the largest container ships. I used to cross the Key Bridge a couple of times a week. Now, when I take the I-95 tunnel, I look off in the distance and see this monster of a thing off in the distance. It really doesn't even look like a ship.

      @@Leshic2 Typical American response. Hope the Baltimore Mayor has his ducks in a row. Threatening Hyandai and Ship builders when you failed on having escort tugs around a high value asset and the ship completed it's two prior port inspections with hardly a mark shows he's pulling at straws. There's nothing fishy here, the port failed to have escort tugs, probably didn't do their own port inspection on the ship and whatever other corners they've cut for their money God. Hopefully the FBI is treating the crew exactly how they are treating their own pilot with some respect.

      You are only seeing mostly Class A ships as well here, may be some B fitted on the smaller work vessels. Would be a lot more in reality :D

    Regarding your FBI comments: spot on. To top it off, they have a one page playbook. When they conduct a raid, every indicdent is treated as if you are a fully armed, fire-breathing murderous mercenary. If one of the crew was sleeping in his bunk naked, they would have been paraded out that way. Given no opportunity to grab a pair of pants.

    I'm glad to see movement again! As I was crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, the Carmen was passing beneath. I just now learned it's one of the first ships to leave the port of Baltimore. Thanks for the update!

    Hey sal really liked hearing what you were saying about the crew, can't believe that heavy handed stuff from FBI and at the very least they could have given replacement phone's to the crew so they can talk to family and friends, i think it's disgusting behaviour thanks for the video mate

      The problem with the idea of replacements is that they won't have their WhatsApp configurations on them. While it is possible to rebuild that it is highly likely they didn't bring with them the alternate communication method needed to do so-or at least not something which isn't now also impounded by the FBI.
      The FBI WANTED TO CUT THEM OFF from outside contact. It IS intentional. They are treating this as a Counter-terrorism activity, they'd have waited otherwise.

      FBI is basically Gestapo. In my experience they act like it too.
      FBI is doing this to punish them, or perhaps prevent them from contacting anyone.
      Remember a big thing going on in Congress is that they are debating on how they can infringe on first amendment rights (you know, like banning TikTok), and they consider this a really big matter, instead of stuff like, you know restoring traffic to Baltimore ASAP or keeping the Russians down. That shows you how much "leadership" the US has right now.
      Pretty soon it will probably be worse than China.

    The ship mentioned, Balsa94 , is a rather small "commercial ship" as such things are these days. A tad over 100 meters in length. As the photos show, it was empty and high in the water, with thus reduced channel depth requirements.

    Capt Andy Jones and his trusty steed, The Minorcan Mullet, worked tirelessly every day as the salvage project of the Golden Ray progressed in St Simons GA. This is our backyard and we love the area dearly. Thankfully, although restrictions were tight as the salvage work commenced and it is such a small body of water, Andy got stunning videos every single day to keep his viewers up to date. Andy and The Mullet are maritime legends now attempting to bring the public first-hand, accurate information of the Key Bridge salvage in Baltimore. Thank you for noting his efforts! 🇺🇸⚓️

    I read that the Dali was going to sail for 35 days. So the crew was expecting to be onboard for at least that long. So I'm not as concerned about them as about having them available for interviews until the NTSB and/or FBI are satisfied. The authorities may have already found some evidence (not disclosed to us) of negligence or criminal actions by the crew. We just don't know.

    Your exactly right about the FBI butting out unless called in by the NTSB period. On the DOD side such investigations are entirely separate period...The JAGs have to do their own thing and if people talk they talk based on their own decision. What is said to a Safety investigation cannot be shared period with a JAG investigation

      YES you are so Right my friend 😊 I agree 💯 with everything ( SAL) the great play by play all thing marine traffic wise Baltimore. In Airline cases the NTSB reconstruction of accidents is top notch. They interview in a non threatening manner. What ( SAL) said about this in the darkness Raid on crew, taking their only line of comm. Out of ship. It all is wrong big time. On a ship the captain is the master, all crew follow his command period. It's kind of like a dictatorship if you will, but this is how it has always been at sea. To now treat the crew like criminals
      Bet some of the crew members are scared out of their minds to be frisked and personal property taken. I can beat some thinking "WHAT" I thought American was a free country. These crew members watching big American government FBI agents do this terrible treatment to them

    Sal, good points on the well being of the crew. In emergency response (marine and other), we generally talk about the Golden 48 Hrs after a significant event (such as this) to get the crew psychological counseling. The stress and human toll will be significant. Regarding Criminal Investigations vs NTSB: I believe that Criminal is primary. Re: NTSB for the ship and ship operator, charter to be a "party in the investigation", they have to waive right to Attourney's being present during NTSB questioning. If the ship operator is not a party to the NTSB investigation, they are not participatory to all the findings until the report(s) are issued. Even though you have to waive your right to counsel, most companies decide to do so in order to stay as close to the NTSB investigation as possible. Im not an Atty, I did attend the NTSB Marine Investigator course years ago. Perhaps a retired USCG Investigator can let us know more about a criminal vs NTSB investigations happing at the same time.

      The NTSB investigations are long and drawn out. Sometimes their conclusion is inconclusive. While many immediately jumped to the conclusion that this was simply bad luck and an accident, there are others who think differently. If there was more confidence in the FBI, it would be good to have them investigating early on. The problem is a large percentage of the public has lost confidence in the organization. The FBI could well conclude that this was simply an accident caused by a series of events related to the poor maintenance of the ship. In my mind, there has always been a question related to the power outages on the ship which were very obvious form the moment it happened . Being an insomniac, I was aware of it within less than an hour of it actually happening. Reporters were showing that the ship lost almost all electrical power from the get go. What is amazing is that they were actually able to get the bridge traffic shut down. The loss of life was tragic, but honestly it could have been much worse.
      Here's another thing: What if the Dali actually sank in the middle of the channel? It took about 2 years to clear the Golden Ray after it rolled over on it's side. I'm optimistic the Dali will be re-floated relatively easily. When we see it sail away from Baltimore, it will be a joyous moment.

      @@JimWhitaker You just have to take a look at some history with shipping incidents. There was an incident in Turkey for instance of a tanker running over an escort vessel. Despite clear footage of the incident from a Russian vessel nearby showing there was no possible way the master could have seen or even prevented running it over and that in fact the escort vessel went to close to the bow thus causing it to be sucked under being at fault. They simply jailed the Syrian master and threw him under the bus to keep their own records clean and nationals from being jailed. The FBI also has a very clear track record disregarding legislation altogether and doing their own dirty work so it's not a stretch to say the public has no confidence in them.

      During one of the press conferences I listened to, it was allowed to be said that all 8 workers were on break and in their vehicles. One who survived did so because the vehicle he was in had manually operated windows and was able to egress from vehicle by rolling down window to avoid drowning. (no word about the other survivor). If the unrecovered workers are in cars, they are likely staying put until recovered.

    On NTSB vs FBI. Right after TWA 800 explosion, both NTSB and FBI were working the file. NTSB did its normal technical investigation to find technical cause of explosion, performance of aircraft etc. Meanwhile FBI was using its "criminal" connections to find any hot leads on who could have planted a bomb (terrorist groups etc). As I recall, there was debate on who was prime investigator at time and I beleive it was FBI. Eventually, NTSB advanced enough to know explosion happened in centre fuel tank which was mostly empty and not in baggage at which point the FBI bowed out.
    Important distiction between NTSB and FBI/police: NTSB finds cause of accident. Police finds whom to blame.
    In the case of the Dali, the NTSB was prime and only now did FBI get involved after NTSB had finished evidence gathering and gone back to Washington to analyse data. It is not clear if it was the NTSB who sent message to FBI about needing to interview crewmembers for possible charges for negligence etc. There would also be political pressure from a governor who wants to look in control and if he can't get the ship to pay for all the damages (and pprt being closed for so long) that he can at least get one of more charged for something/anything.
    Consider the purely theoretical scenario of captain ordering ship to leave despite knowing electrical switchboard was faulty and could lead to loss of engine/steering. NTSB interviews are not "legal" in terms of laying charges, as they are purely to collect cause of accident and not lay blame (a very core pricipal for investigators in order to ensure cooperation of crew). The FBI however, can step in and interview crew to collect criminal evidence that can lead to some manslaughter charges. And FBI would want to act before the crew leave USA after which they have no means to get to them.
    What is not clear to me is the legal status and rights of crewmembers. Note sure if Maritime law/treaties give special status to mariners. But consider that while they may be inside USA territory, they have not cleared US customs and technically not in the USA. This is important at airport or land customs because until you have cleared customs, there are many rights that US citizens have that do not apply. They can seize and search your phone, demand your password (normally protected by 5th amendment) search your vehicle without warrant etc.
    The message to me is that the NTSB has progressed in its findings enough to show that a risk was known by crew and the risk to leave was taken.
    OR
    Politicians, knowing they won't get any sigificant amount of money from ship onwer/operator wants some heads to fall and the only ones they can get their hands on are the crew members and have has FBI to find a reason to arrest them before they move out of US territorial waters.

      In situations like this the blame is often placed in individuals not actually in charge. One case that comes to mind is the National Guard Officer in charge of the prisons in Iraq. She didn't even know the CIA had taken over a wing of one the main Iraqi prisons and was torturing victims. Yet she was held responsible. It was recently revealed that the CIA was operating 16 stations inside of Ukraine close to the Russian border which led to Russia's "unprovoked" attack on Ukraine. Also the US completely ignores plebiscite in Ukraine where large majority portions of the population have voted to join Russia. For those who don't know, Crimea has essentially been a part of the Russia since the late 1700's and in 2014 or shortly thereafter, the residents of Crimea voted to become part of Russia and are now Russian citizens. That was 10 years ago. Ukraine laying claims to present day Crimea is total folly. It's not going to happen. Actually most everything Russia is doing is legal under international law. Putin has been very careful about that. Ukraine is not a member of NATO, and is not a member of the EU. As far as I know it has no actual defense treaties with the US. Additionally elections in Ukraine are highly suspect. All the while, large scale money laundering operations using Ukraine are a very distinct possibility. Look no further than the US pretendent.

    SEE I told ya open in under 6 weeks . Port has many rail links too . Many preferred the other way around the beltway as no tolls too .

    Certainly they've made a great deal of progress. I think declaring it open is misleading. They still can't move ships the size of Dali. The ship pictured is nowhere near the size of the Dali.

    @20:30 the point where you have your cursor is exactly where the missing vehicles will be. If you watch the video of the collaspe that is where those vechicles go into the water. The interview of one of the two survivors said he was able to get his vehicle window open because it had a hand crank instead of being electric and that gave him the ability to get out.

    This has stirred up so much drama. I've been watching this on a live cam channel, and it's hard to grasp how much is being done because you can't cover the entire area at the same time. So, everyone has their own opinion on what should be done, how quickly and a tremendous amount of speculation put out as fact. I realize that the people involved have better things to do than conduct press releases. However. It's garnered a lot of attention. You can't tell the country and the world, that it's an important event, and not follow up with facts and figures. People, and not just 'shipping nerds' and wanna-be engineers, want to know about progress. Some of us like the nuts-and-bolts info like, how many tons are left to go, and things like that. We get it, it's a guess to an extent, but someone is keeping track of how many barges have moved girders/roadway/cement or whatever. We don't even know if they're planning on taking the old bridge supports out, or just build a bridge in another area and ignore them. Hard to judge 'progress' when the basics aren't even put out. I get it, shipping is the focus. That's where the jobs/economy are coming from, after all. But the American people are on the hook (tax dollars) until...and it's a pretty big 'if' those tax dollars can ever be recovered from the ship/cargo owners. So, give us the information, most of us aren't gonna scream if things have to adapt based on reality.

      The best sources of information are independent reporters like Sal and Capt Andy. I find the MSM reports to be mostly lame with a lot of self congratulatory chest thumping by politicians who use the opportunity to be at the front of the parade. You have the guy who states, "they are using propane torches to cut the steel." That's not quality information. It's misinformation.

    miraculous work done to reopen the port - hats off to all the engineers that have worked so hard in such mad conditions
    building a bridge in sections is one thing, demolishing one that has fallen is a completely different game
    just the small matter of getting the Dali out from being pinned down by the remaining structure
    love Captain Andy, Menorcan Mullet, such a great guy and i watched all of the Golden Ray vids - which served as such an important document for the future, just as yours do Sal, its very much yesterdays news here in the UK but i am glued to RUclips
    oh yeah - the size difference between the vessels is very graphic - completely dwarfed by Dali - indeed high praise to the tug boyz

      As they have not cleared US customs, there are in a zombie zone with regards to rights, like you are arriving an international flight at airport priior to getting the "welcome to United states" by the customs agent.

I don't believe there will any reprecussions at all to any of the crew for any reason nor do I think the DOJ will ever file any charges. No harm, no problem.

      I agree, although they sadly put themselves in this situation. When the Dali arrived Saturday, it kept breaking down at the dock. The folks in the Port repeatedly told them they need to get it fixed and they kept saying they were in a rush to get to Sri Lanka and would fix it later. You’re worried about them not speaking to their family, but my business has not made one single penny as a result of their negligence. We are all suffering here because they refused to fix something they knew they should’ve fixed, so, we don’t owe them grace…they owe it to us.

    That initial escorting technique will not prevail. After the Pilots get some experience with active tethered escorting...it can be done without the forward tug ahead of the ship. Can be done with one tractor dead astern (assuming the ships stern chocks are strengthened) and or one tug on either bow (once channel is wide enough). This will be come more routine.
