It's something Lay (his real name is Zhang Yixing) started I believe in 2020 with his album Lit. It was first time he mixed his Chinese culture with western sounds. Whole album is a masterpiece, the MV is a whole movie (similar to Kai Tian MV). Standouts are for sure Lit and Jade. It's not just the traditional sounds that he's using, but myths too. Lit and Jade are based on Peking Opera. Kai Tian is based on God of creation Pangu - because Yixing created Mix Mandarin POP. There's Flying Apsaras too. The dance practice is as amazing as the song. Of course he does a lot of POP songs too, like for example the Sprite Limelight projects or his full English album Step. He is always doing something different, so it's not like his fans can get used to one sound. Plus, like you said fans only see a part of the artist. This one though is showing a LOT. He's the composer / producer / lyricist / choreographer / MV director. He's also an actor and musical actor just recently. Also, the two performances you saw were actually from New Years Eve, so VERY recent. The first one was pre-recorded and the broadcast was on New Years Eve, the second one was from his company's New Year's Eve concert. And he's part of EXO. I recommend checking them out too as you are a vocal coach 💕
