The problem with Nicaragua is electricity is often more expensive than rent. A cooler mountain town might work. There's another small city, Jinotega, not far from Matagalpa, that's at about 4000'.

My understanding is very few people use air con in Matagalpa, which is the expensive part.
We are looking at Matagalpa or Jinotega for retirement. We prefer cool weather and as you mentioned, no air con makes an already inexpensive city even more so .
My wife is originally from Corinto, which is like sitting on the face of the sun. I lived in Florida most of my life and Corinto makes Florida look chilly.
Matagalpa could very easily be our retirement home….or San Cristobal de las Casas, Mexico….we will be living in one of these by March 2023 !

Um, no, 1,000 meters in town. Some of the higher mountains nearby are higher. You don't have to air-condition but some nights in late January and early February are cold enough that if I had heating, I'd use it.

Dan/Qiang - thanks for this review - looks like a wonderful town, reminds me a bit of Tecate Mexico. It's surprising that more expats would have not discovered this gem - large enough (but not too big) population, plenty of resources and excellent temps/weather. Your next mission should be finding a way to replicate Qiang's metabolism and selling it in liquid form. Cracks me up how she can eat so much and stay so thin - good genetics, activity and mindset! Thank you again for sharing! EW :)

Um, nope. Nicaraguans can be gallant but lots of women are rather forward, too, so no biggie if you decline politely. I've been living here alone as a older woman and have never paid a bribe to anyone for anything after getting conned the first night I was here and got a ride to Jinotega with some problem people. Be careful with gringas with younger boyfriends. Getting hustled and pickpocketed happens, but violent crime is rare. White Americans are considered a bit problematic as some of us have killed some of them.

Mexico has gone crazy with their residency requirements of over $4,000 monthly income needed to qualify, which prices out most Americans/Canadians/Brits/Aussies, so Nicaragua is looking better and better as a super-affordable place to retire longterm at only $600 monthly needed to qualify for longterm residency. The infrastructure and quality of life is not as good as Mexico though. I stayed for 5 months in Leon and Granada with Granada being waaaaay nicer and more colorful than Leon.

For residency, you need $1K a month for the first person per month and $150 or $200 for additional people per month. I think having what your family is suggesting would make more travel in the region more possible, also would cover in home health care in oldest age.

    Hi Dan.
You forgot to quote on the health care cost and quality. What is your take is it better to pay an international insurance valid any where in the world or to purchase one locally?

    • @VagabondAwake
      @VagabondAwake  2 года назад

Great question Tony Hernandez, I have one report where I explain what I do about health care and another where I show you how I search for health insurance.
What I do about health care: vagabondbuddha.com/two-biggest-risks-of-retiring-early-overseas/
Report where I search for health insurance: vagabondbuddha.com/best-health-insurance-for-ex-pats-in-philippines/
By the way, once you search for health care you will start seeing more offers for health insurance and travelers insurance when you are online. Health insurance is one of the most dynamic or changing industries in the travel world because so many people around the world are deciding to live or retire outside their home country. So do a search every year before you renew to make sure you have the best available for your personal circumstances because new ones come out every few months. Thanks for asking so I could answer this for many people! Dan

Just wondering... Are you guys able to "show" someone, kinda , one on one ? I am recently retired, and I am wanting to make my life plan, but I am so scared.

So sorry, we don't do any kind of one-on-one counseling. I hear Kristin does. www.travelingwithkristin.com/subscribe

We just follow the local rules when we enter a new country. They change all the time so you would need to check now if you are thinking of going. We entered over 2 montsh ago now so what we were required to do would not help you. So sorry.

Back packing -- not common. Most people go hiking and return -- Matagalpa is good for that. Selva Negra, several miles out of town has restaurant, coffee farm, and overnight accomodations and hiking trails. Jinotega has some hiking trails, but it's advised to go with someone who knows the area.

Laundry $28 a month? How about laundry $2 a month by doing it yourself. Use the "pilla".
