The Thorens is a turntable, the more common nomenclature. A Gramophone would be a complete playing unit like the Victrola.

+AQuietNight I should say that Thorens was a good catch. I had a later date Thorens and I am sorry I sold it.

Really helpful. I run into a lot of vintage phonographic equipment in my area. My Dad is a former audio specialist technician so I use him to help evaluate my purchases. Wish I had your shop set up for cleaning testing etc

Hey Pete. I'm doing a similar thing with a rather rare Technics sl series TT. It's near mint but had lots of operational issues. It's sitting at the repair shop waiting to be fixed. All in I will have spent around $115 including purchase price and hope to at least double my money. I will probably ship internationally for this item too as I know there are tons of fervent audiophiles overseas that will pay great money for quality audio items. Thanks for the vid!

Pete, keep in mind that back then the arm was a separate purchase on a upper end audiophile turntable. So a little research will be needed to determine what the arm is. Thorens was still offering armless turntables up through the 1980's, however the overall quality had declined vs. that unit. I snagged a Rek-O-Kut turntable long ago (which I am keeping as it sounds amazing) that was actually 4 separate items... the turntable itself, the base, the arm (which is a Rek-O-Kut in this case) and of course the cartridge... which ironically happens to be a Grado. I know mine is worth a fortune, but it's worth more to me.

I've flipped a couple Thorens TT's .... I would imagine the dust cover (if original), if you can find one, would go for silly money. Did it come with one?

The Arm on your Craigslist, $175 Thorens TD 124 MK II is NOT the original arm. In fact, it’s not even a Thorens arm. It’s an American made arm from a company called Audio Empire. They made a line of excellent belt drive turntables, and it’s somewhat unusual to find an arm from an Audio Empire “Troubadour” turntable on another brand of ‘table.
The arms are good, if a bit on the high-mass side. They are dynamically balanced (the counterweight balances the arm, fore to aft, but the stylus force is provided by a clock spring which pulls the front of the arm (and the cartridge/stylus) toward the platter.

Nice Price. Here in Switzerland costs an old Thorens in this condition minimum 1000 swiss francs.
