As a music editor, many thanks for acknowledging our true work. It almost never happens. I appreciate your graciousness and frankly, honesty.

I'm very impressed by Tom's complete understanding of music editing and the knowledge of collaboration and creative input the music editor can have on the score

Great....a composer talking about a music editor. I just authored a course on music editing., and Tom describes it perfectly. Some music editors just implement score, others completely rearrange the score. Also, music editors also develope temp tracks, guiding the composer through the spotting notes etc.......(they also help or create spotting notes).
I 've worked with some great music editors, and I'm always impressed by what they come up. Also, the stem editing comment is great! No one really talks about this.

Great video as usual Tom! The third level you are talking about is actually called "music tracker", at least that is how we used to call it 10 years ago, i used to be one for Bear McCreary among other composers. The job was exactly what you describe: Bear or the team would give us stems of cues of all the previous episodes of a tv show and we would just come up with new cues based on those stems. It was like playing lego, super fun, and we had a lots of freedom for creativity too!
And you are right, most of the top music editors i know who do music tracking, are composers themselves.

Wow!!! )))))) Thanks for the answer. I am a music editor with 8 years of experience in Ukraine. I would be grateful for any information on how people become music editors in Hollywood.

What is the job of the orchestrator? They seem quite enigmatic

to make your midi projects make sense theory wise, when 100+ humans need to play it live, so many different instruments in different sections of the orchestra can take over for parts that might have gotten mashed up when composing in the box, your composer might not have gotten their degree in music theory because they're the creativity part, but you can be sure your orchestrator did

Thank you for this Tom, I needed some insight on this topic. Would definitely love to try music editing when I get the chance.

nice! How do you manage the latency between the main scoring Cubase and the video on the second machine, in order to hit the edit to a frame accurate level?
    Thank you! #AskMeAnything
