This song is one of the saddest I know. I think a lot of the power comes from the fact that it meshed perfectly with the Spice Girls' story in two different ways. On the obvious level, they were saying goodbye to Geri, who had left the group. But on another level, the girls were saying goodbye to us. I think they knew that the Spice Girls moment was ending, and were probably aware of this second meaning to the song as they wrote and sang it. I think many of their fans understood it that way too. Many of their fans were quite young, so some might not have understood yet the way pop moments come and go, but I bet even they felt it.
Well, now I'm crying. Thanks a lot. I grew up with Spice Girls, I loved them so much. I want to go back to when I was 9, 10 y/o, not a care in the world. Sigh ...
I really miss the 90s where every band/group/artist in every genre made beautiful and meaningful music. Even a metalhead like me can enjoy music like this.
My sister and I were the biggest Spice Girl fans when we were growing up, in Feb 2008 she sadly passed away aged 19, we played this song at her funeral surrounded by all of her friends and family. It’s still hard to listen to without tears but always reminds me of what we had ❤️
I'm 37 years old and I still remember when Geri left the Spice Girls. Cried for a whole week. This song still gets me chills and makes me cry like back then. Can't get over it.
"Look for the rainbow in every storm. Find out for certain, loves gonna be there for you. You'll always be someone's baby." I adore the way she sings those words. When this song came out, I had been a Spice Girls fan since the beginning, and when I first heard this, as a fan, I wept. I felt as if they were singing to the fans. It's a beautiful song and it will always be. LoveU Spice Girls and ThankU for being a part of my life 😘
And it is very significant that it's Mel B who sings that part (mostly that of "you'll always be someone's baby"), cosidering the reason why Geri left :/

I’m 32 and I still feel the heartbreak and sadness every time I hear this song...Geri leaving was the first heartbreak a lot of us preteen/teens felt...it could have never been the same without her 😔💕
I don't think the Spice Girls will ever die. These girls left behind a legacy that no one can compare to. 19 years later and they are still talked about. I will never stop being a Spice Fan. I love these girls endlessly.
I've been listening to the Spice Girls since I was in high school and people thought I was crazy, but the music brought so much joy and positive energy to me that I didn't care. I proudly blast this music with pride. I am beyond thankful for everything your ladies did to help me make it through very hard times. Spice Girls forever!
The thing I like about the Spice Girls is that they are very easy to listen to. Their voices aren't so aggressive. There are some singers that are great, with power, and attitude, but their voices are overly aggressive and can give you a heart attack. Spice Girls have really chill voices and you just relax when you listen.
That's absolutely absurd and it's wrong! The singer's tone in a song is an important one as it helps to promote the overall effect of the song that's being presented. And of course, there is a sense of sending the right type of tone with the right type of song in order to connect with the one whose listening. However, you are suggesting that in many songs with powerful singers is that they are aggressive with their tones in the songs that they sing and that is just not so. It's okay to love tones that are mellow, in which you are accustomed to but don't inadvertently use that as a excuse as to not to listen to songs with high level feelings and or emotions. After all, that's what tone represents in a song. What should be focused on is the message in that particular song. Don't be a one thing person!
No no no no No no no no Now listen little child, there will come a day When you will be able, able to say Never mind the pain, or the aggravation You know there's a better way for you and me to be Look for the rainbow in every storm Fly like an angel, heaven sent to me Goodbye my friend I know you're gone, you said you're gone But I can still feel you here It's not the end Gotta keep it strong Before the pain turns into fear So glad we made it Time will never change it, no no no No no no no Just a little girl, big imagination Never letting no one take it away Went into the world (into the world) What a revelation She found there's a better way For you and me to be Look for the rainbow in every storm Find out for certain love's gonna be there for you You'll always be someone's baby Goodbye my friend I know you're gone, you said you're gone But I can still feel you here It's not the end Gotta keep it strong Before the pain turns into fear So glad we made it Time will never change it, no no no No no no no You know it's time to say goodbye The times when we would play about The way we used to scream and shout We never dreamed you'd go your own sweet way Look for the rainbow in every storm Find out for certain, love's gonna be there for you You'll always be someone's baby Goodbye my friend I know you're gone, you said you're gone But I can still feel you here It's not the end Gotta keep it strong Before the pain turns into fear So glad we made it Time will never never ever change it No no no no You know it's time to say goodbye No no no no And don't forget you can rely No no no no You know it's time to say goodbye And don't forget on me, you can rely (no no no no) I will help, help you on your way I will be with you everyday No no no no I will be with you everyday
I've always thought she had the best voice of the group, But Geri and Emma were pushed for the "... appel" and Victoria was also eye candy. To me without Mel C and Mel B it wouldn't have been as amazing as they were. No hate I just thought that they were the best.
Spice Girls could certainly belt out a Christmas number one. Crazy to think that they basically came and went in under three years. Short-lived, but era-defining.
Probably the best song they recorded. Mel C is absolutely gorgeous in this video, she always was my favourite and was without a shadow of a doubt the strongest singer in the group.xx

@@MoMo-vu7bg I'm so sorry for your loss :( It's a pain we cannot explain because they're parts of our hearts and souls. But be sure she will always be watching over you from heaven, and there she can be friends with my beloved kitties Camila and Titi ❤
I love how this song is filled with love and respect. You can also feel the pain but at the same time there's something graceful and optimistic. I rarely see something like that when someone leaves a group/band. Great attitude from Spice Girls ❤
This song represents more than just a member leaving a girl group. It signifies the end of an amazing 3 years with a girl group that changed a lot of our lives. We felt betrayal when Geri left. She not only left the group but she left our lives and for a lot of us teenagers it was our first time of feeling betrayed. Yeah deep but at the time it really hurt. Goodbye was the last song they did as a group who actually wanted to be together. Forever was completed just to prove they could release another album without Geri, but their hearts weren’t in it.
Forever is actually a really good album, there was just no mega promotions behind it unlike the first 2 albums. Vocally they sound amazing in forever, people only downplay it cause it wasent as successful as spice and spice world. Plus they had grown as people and the entertainment industry had changed to, r&b and hip hop was breaking through at the time. So of course they where gonna sound different can't keep the sound of there first album forever.
its the only spice girls song that ive tried to avoid listening. i love the song! but i remembered the pain back in 1998 when geri left the spice girls. it was like a first heart break at very young age, I was 13 when geri left.😣. one of the biggest news in Philippines back in 1998.

It's easily one of my all time favourite songs, as well as one that gets me extremely emotional. Not just due to nostalgia, but it's a song relatable to anyone's life.
Well don't forget the impact of these girl groups. The Supremes and Destiny's Child are the ones in the same league historically as The Spice Girls (I'm a music history major)

Emma Bunton on this video looked so stunningly gorgeous! I have always loved her but I also liked the rest of its members.
I know what you mean
No no no no
No no no no
Now listen little child, there will come a day
When you will be able, able to say
Never mind the pain, or the aggravation
You know there's a better way for you and me to be

Fly like an angel, heaven sent to me
Goodbye my friend
I know you're gone, you said you're gone
But I can still feel you here
It's not the end
Gotta keep it strong
Before the pain turns into fear
So glad we made it
Time will never change it, no no no

Just a little girl, big imagination
Never letting no one take it away

Mel C's voice is like nothing else, simply amazing
She's amazing xx

I love how this song is filled with love and respect. You can also feel the pain but at the same time there's something graceful and optimistic. I rarely see something like that when someone leaves a group/band. Great attitude from Spice Girls ❤

@NOT YOU And Danny to McFly
Mel C is so under-rated what a beautiful voice she has

Geri for sure is missed, but is nice to see that they manage to produce master pieces like this one even in her absence.
Apparently she helped write it

I thought this track was like, explicitly about her leaving.
