general550 If that’s the case, then how come all the bad cops that commit horrible crimes always get defense from their buddies? There are no good cops. You’ll rarely find video footage of a good cop stopping a bad cop.
I really think his dad has suffered more than the kid himself, at the end of the day he punched his father. He deserved time, but not that amount. All these years his dad is the one who blamed himself, believed he failed him as a father, you can really see he is in pain. I hope he heals and the only one capable of helping him heal is his son. I wish them both a long and happy life, and hope they can heal and get past it all.
If the dad has never talked to his son about the event, how does he know he regrets what he did? Putting things "under the carpet" doesn't solve anything.
Some things don't need to be talked about. He's been in there for 12 years thinking about it so it's obvious what happenned and They both know where they went wrong and sounds like it just needs to be over, not bringing it up.
Yo, but the guy says right there in this video that he would never have involved police; additionally his overall demeanour and attitude combined with the daughter saying that the guilt weighs on him, illuminates his inner feelings somewhat- no?. You can see when he points with a curled finger towards his wife, saying ,"SHE called the Ambulance (that concurrently brought the police)", that even a LITTLE alleviation of this guilt relieves him. What, is this guy not going to watch the video about his case that has brought world-wide attention?
F A Agreed, both look like they understand what went wrong and all the different ways it could've gone. But it didn't, so there's no use bringing it back up.
My instinct is screaming 'don't reply to someone called Kim Kardashian Un'. I'll regret it, I'm sure. To clarify, I'm criticising Vice. I do not agree with an open life sentence for burning a bed with no harm done. Add a month to the sentence. If he burned down the prison and killed 500 people my opinion would be different. He served his sentence for the assault and was arrested on release, taken to a police station, and charged under the IPP law for arson. How does the assault have anything to do with the IPP sentence as Vice's title states?
BonesTheCat Thank you. I was going to comment about this but you cleared it up. The title is definitely misleading. I clicked the video interested in how/why someone could get that much time for a punch, so this was a waste of time for me.
Edesonism i was thinking he punched a polititian or some big shot too but i guess his dad... also the title was kinda clickbait he didnt get 99 years for a punch he got 99 years for a result of setting the mattress on fire when he was serving the 14 months for assult
PLEASE INVESTIGATE THE JUDGE!!! like this so everyone can see we want justice its never too late of the people speak they will hear hopefully. this breaks my heart this isnt true justice REAL justice needs to be served!!!
jesus regardless of the title of the video it's absolutely absurd that this guy ended up in prison for 12 years for punching his dad during an argument and this kafkaesque system error has probably ruined any chance this guy will ever have at a normal life
Jake Reynolds he got like 14 Months for punching his dad. The other came from his setting his mattress on fire. Not that it's any better. But it's not because he punched his father.
Jesse Silva I get that but that wouldn’t have happened had they not prosecuted him for the original sentence? It even says they didn’t want to prosecute him. I think that’s more what this is about, how people get lost in the prison system, rather than the the specifics of the person.
Jake Reynolds Well the mattress didn't light itself on fire. Regardless, he punched his father in the face.. over a dog. I don't want to go overboard and say he's a terrible person, but if you're assaulting your family members something isn't right with you.
Jake Reynolds that’s a fallacy. Correlation does not imply causation. Because it’s like you’re saying because he punched his father and was sent to prison he had to set fire to his mattress. He could have just served his time and been in for 14 months. But in a separate incident he set his mattress on fire and was absurdly punished for it.
Come on, we have no idea what he went through in prison to make him want to set the bed on fire, or what exactly his purpose was. Yes, it still is bad and against the prison rules to do that, but giving him possibly 99 years (serving 12), its fucking insane, and the only thing you are doing is destroying more the person, something that could turn any sane, good person into a ball of horrible emotions and a fucked up mindset.
when he kissed his father on the forehead, it almost felt like the father was the son and the son was the father now. Absolutely heartwarming, i had to cry :')
People who are actually dangerous get way less than a kid who punched someone in a fit of rage. Get the kid mental help, don't throw him in jail. The justice system is so broken. I hate the fact that 1 person (the judge) can basically ruin your life for no reason). I can just imagine the jury saying he's guilty and the judge goes "99 YEARS BUDDY, MATTRESSES ARE PRICELESS!" That's just messed up.
It's all over the world lad, and it's safe to say, justice system is truly fucked. People, especially those who are serving under the law should realize people who commit higher atrocies should receive this kind of treatment, not a kid who punched his dad and burned his mattress.
I'm guessing he got a life Tarif (not sure if that's the correct name) where your not given a release date and it's down to the parole board to decide when your ready to leave, he must of done other things in prison while he was serving his sentence that made them decide he was a danger to the public so kept refusing parole.
I think we're only being told half the story. There are sentencing guidelines for every crime and I can't see any crime attracting that sort of sentence without multiple lives being lost. Any lawyer could appeal that and get it down to a couple of months.
This video/documentary is beautifully made. It's quite succinct and well put together, and it doesn't feel like it's trying to convey any type of moral message or lesson, it's just presenting a real life story for the audience to digest in whatever way they want to. Vice, you've outdone yourselves once again, thank you so much
Sorry for my ignorance but, if the victim doesn't want to press charges, isn't the accused released immediately? What's the point of holding someone in prison if not even the victim wants him there?...
Nope. Sadly, the State (US), or the Crown (UK), is the one who files charges. I served 8 months, even when the "victim" didn't want me arrested, and pleaded in court on my behalf.
The charges are pressed by the state, especially in domestic violence situations because the victim is often coerced into dropping the charges. However, in cases of theft the victim can often tell the state they don’t want to pursue charges. The type of crime does influence how much say the victim gets

Lighting a fire in prison is classed as arson with intent to endanger life thats why he is IPP
So he weren't ipp to start with ?
I really think his dad has suffered more than the kid himself, at the end of the day he punched his father. He deserved time, but not that amount. All these years his dad is the one who blamed himself, believed he failed him as a father, you can really see he is in pain. I hope he heals and the only one capable of helping him heal is his son. I wish them both a long and happy life, and hope they can heal and get past it all.
Being jailed the over a punch is nonsense. What that dude needed was anger management classes and a fine
He deserved jail time for punching his dad? Not mental health support, not counseling, jail time? Really?
The dad did try to steal his dog to be fair
No way in hell did he deserve to be locked up
Imagine if he came out and punched his dad *again* for calling emergency services all them years ago..........
And it'd be well deserved, I wouldn't be surprised if he held on just to kill his dad. I would in that situation.
The dog he fought over is most likely dead now
jesus christ himself such an uplifting comment 🤣
If the dad has never talked to his son about the event, how does he know he regrets what he did? Putting things "under the carpet" doesn't solve anything.
RideByNight totally agreee with you, I hope they speak on the issue. That’s the only way they’ll even come close to coming to terms with it
Some things don't need to be talked about.
But it didn't, so there's no use bringing it back up.
bro the man got 12 years in prison … I think he gets that what he did was wrong after 12 years … no chat needed

The IPP sentence had nothing to do with the punch as your title suggests.
He still shouldn't have gotten that much time for setting his mattress on fire
He didn't.
Of course it does, the punch is what started it all, without the punch he would not of been in prison to set fire to the mattress.
Before I click, I was wondering who was the big shot that this guy punched to get 99 years....
They said his dad over a dog.
Notice how since he feels regret about his son he doesn't leave his house at all almost like he's encarcerating himself
incarcerated
I wish I had a farther as kind hearted as his, such a blessed family.
jesus regardless of the title of the video it's absolutely absurd that this guy ended up in prison for 12 years for punching his dad during an argument and this kafkaesque system error has probably ruined any chance this guy will ever have at a normal life
Jake Reynolds he got like 14 Months for punching his dad.

That's excessive. 99 years is criminal for those charges. Surely this can't be legal.
should change the title to One Mattress, 99 Years in Prison
People who are actually dangerous get way less than a kid who punched someone in a fit of rage. Get the kid mental help, don't throw him in jail. The justice system is so broken. I hate the fact that 1 person (the judge) can basically ruin your life for no reason). I can just imagine the jury saying he's guilty and the judge goes "99 YEARS BUDDY, MATTRESSES ARE PRICELESS!" That's just messed up.
Imagine when he got let out he sparked his dad in jaw again💀💀
Unfortunately, "cruel and unusual punishment" isn't a crime in Europe.
Great to see the good ‘ol USA isn’t the only country that needs prison reform!
It's all over the world lad, and it's safe to say, justice system is truly fucked. People, especially those who are serving under the law should realize people who commit higher atrocies should receive this kind of treatment, not a kid who punched his dad and burned his mattress.
Although England has done a turn and is no longer sentencing people to IPPs, don't lump us in with America!! No-one is THAT bad!
As far as first world countries go, at least its not Japan.
And yet muderers get less time in the UK. What a joke.

When the sentence “Obviously self-harmed again” becomes normal, there’s another problem
This doesn't make any sense. 99 years for burning a matress? Something doesn't add up
Welcome to Britain, where police come when they aren't called and you get 99 years for burning a mattress
So the title is a bit deceptive. He got 14 months for the punch. That’s a little disingenuous...
"99 problems but a bitch ain't one" 🤣😂🤣....huh James huh???

This video/documentary is beautifully made.
@@psygn0sis you beat me to it
psygn0sis Damn, that's fucked up. Stupid way to waste resources too.
The charges are pressed by the state, especially in domestic violence situations because the victim is often coerced into dropping the charges. However, in cases of theft the victim can often tell the state they don’t want to pursue charges. The type of crime does influence how much say the victim gets
@Hey Hey Why wouldn't u press charges?
