    Today Melissa is going to walk you through how to clean your chimney from the top down using a brush and rods. Cleaning your chimney from the top down with a brush and rod is the most commonly used method by DIY chimney cleaners. This type of cleaning method requires you to be on the roof of your home. This method will also result in the least amount of cleanup inside the house. The debris can be contained either inside of the wood stove or by closing off the fireplace opening until you are finished.

    i have a small chimney flute and i use my dollar store round toilet brush as a chimney brush. i duct tape it to the rod and it works great

    I have a 55ft tall chimney that takes an aerial lift to reach and clean (3 story house with walkout basement on a hillside).... or a really rickety set of ladders on the peak of a very steep pitch roofline and a couple of beers... the top of the chimney is 12 ft above the peek. I do it in about an hour with a verrrrry puckered (where the sun don't shine), but it saves me the $2000 price tag to have a "pro" come do it every year. Btw, I use the the same kind of wire brush (masonry flue), and alot of pole extensions.

    I burn with a stove as supplemental heat and use that exact brush and rods as demonstrated. Always worked for me. Also I use creosote treating chemical tubes that you throw in with the fire once a week or so. It doesn't totally eliminate it but makes cleaning the chimney much easier later on.

      you dont push the rod striaght to the bottom you work the brush as you go cleaning a 1 foot length at atime....the way she does it the brush will get stuck and be really hard to get back up.......for chimney that needs little cleaning this method might work

    I don’t like the button lock pokes. The button sticks and it’s very difficult to get them apart , unless you have a special set of pliers to press the button in to get it to release. Also , with the screw type poles , take two pliers up the roof with you to unscrew the poles , they like to stick and there’s not much to grip .... the poles are a small diameter. You’ll also want a wire brush to clean soot off the cap . Most importantly, when running the poles /brush down the chimney, be sure to torque your grip in a tightening turn , otherwise you may very well unscrew a pole as you’re running it down the chimney! Then you’re screwed !
    Great and informative video !

    When and how do you use creosote cleaner. Do you dip the brush into that or put some on top of brush and use gravity? Don't see anyone using the stuff, is it rarely used?

    Good instructions. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to remove a wire chimney sweep from chimney inside of house? I just done a sweep from inside house up my chimney. Thinking about pushing a metal flat plate beside brush, then maybe it will glide past the damper. I don't like climbing on roof so I cleaned from the bottom up. I know it would have worked best being on top of house, but I take care of my Dad & didn't want to take chance of an accident, etc.

    Can you burn a private papers (correspondence) in a chimney? In small batches of course. And a small pieces of a cardboard (~ 12x12 in?), like 2-3 of them at a time? Thank you for the great film.

    • @Pickleriiiiiick
      @Pickleriiiiiick 4 года назад

      The coatings and ink chemicals aren't great and can create more creosote from what I've read. Lots of people start their fires with newspaper though, without issue, so depends on how small of batches you are doing i guess. I definitely wouldn't be using it as an alternative to wood for heat.

    • @thegreatwhite75
      @thegreatwhite75 4 года назад +1

      Yes, you can. You just don't want to burn colored ink newspapers, etc, in a woodstove that has a catalytic combuster, because it will poison the cat.

    Could you not drop the rope down the chimney and tie it to the brush pulling it up? Seems like a cost effective way to do it without having to purchase the rods...

    • @physiques

      The brush should fit firmly against the walls, if you were able to use a rope, than the brush likely wasn't firmly against the inner walls to give a proper cleaning. The brush shouldn't just drop to the bottom of the chimney but require a little force and that can't be done with a rope. This is something you should be doing yearly, buy the rods you'll get your moneys worth, know the job was done proper and prevent a possible chimney fire. All the best ;)

    What I don't understand about so many of these chimney cleaning videos is that I have seen very few that shows the person doing the cleaning wearing a respirator. In my opinion I would not do any chimney cleaning without wearing a good respirator and not just a paper mask.
