UK September: Just received some dahlia tubers in the post with a little bit of damp soil (dwarf variety), some have small floppy green sapling, so will follow this method, storing in a box with holes, newspaper and perhaps a little more soil in a dark cupboard. very helpful. thanks.

Thank you for sharing this information, this method of storing is just perfect and good idea about leaving a glass of water to test the chill. We have no need for that yet idea is great.

I got plastic tape and a so called permanent marker, then found all the writing smudged off and I had no idea which variety was which. Grrhh. Hey ho, should be an interesting garden look this year.

Should we use cinnamon on any broken skin? It is anti fungal and antibacterial.

I do and don't have mold or rotting problems.

Would you think rice hulls would work for dahlia tuber storage? I’m sure I’d have to hydrate much like you recommended for vermiculite?

One confusing point - you note early on that air circulation during storage is important, but then you bury the tubers in peat and say they "shouldn't be exposed to air." This method must work but seems contradictory, especially if tubers are layered in the boxes.
