The Gomukh Tapovan trek begins from Gangotri. Gaumukh or Gomukh means Cow's Mouth. This is the place where Bhagirathi river originates from. Tapovan is a meadow situated above a glacier which is few kilometers from Gaumukh. I stared Gaumukh Tapovan trek at 10.30am in the morning from Gangotri Dham. This yatra takes you through dense forests, across beautiful rivers & rocky paths. This trek is 14 kms from Gangotri & takes you through enchanting Himalayan ranges & diverse flora and fauna. I have reached Bhujwasa at 7pm and ends the journey for the Day. Next day I made program for Gomukh.
Once you start you trek from the town of Gangotri, first you reach Chirbasa after trekking for 9 kilometers. Chirbasa is a main resting point on this trek. 4 kilometers from Chirbasa is a place called Bhojbasa. On your Gaumukh Tapovan trek first night you stay in Bhojbasa. Gaumukh is 5kms from Bhobasa for which you have to cross Bhagirathi river by a trolley. After Gaumukh there is another 4 kms difficult trek to reach Tapovan.
Gomukh's height is 13200 feet.You can see various peaks like Bhagirathi 3 2 1 ,Sudarsan, meru groups ,mt.shivling and nandi parvat in surroundings.
Tapovan is a high-altitude meadow & you can camp here to enjoy the beautiful Himalayan ranges & peaks. If you don't have tents, you can stay in the hut of mauni Baba. Mauni baba also provides you food & beverages. There are many tent camp facilities also you can get provided by various trek agency. To visit Gaumukh Tapovan, you need to obtain permits from Forest Department. Gaumukh is an altitude of 13,123 feet. Tapovan is even higher which sits at an altitude of 14600 feet. The weather in Gaumukh & Tapovan can be harsh. You might face extremely cold temperatures even during the summer.
Tips & Suggestions for Gaumukh Tapovan Trek :
- Spend a night at Gangotri before starting trek from better acclimatin
- Take permission beforehand because its difficult to get Tapovan permit. We manage it online with tge help of agency.
- Hire a guide if you are going to Tapovan
- Plastic is banned to try trek without it
- If you planning to stay in GMVN at Bhojbasa, you can book your bed online
- After Gangotri you won't find much on trek so carry fruits, energy drinks etc with you.
In may to june you will get many option but september- october less facility are there. Because trek agency not arrange/set campsite there. then cost also vary.
