  • A new proposed initiative by the NHS to pay people for losing weight is under the spotlight.
Paul Gately, obesity professor at Leeds Beckett University, understands the concerns that people are raising about the cost.
He explains: “With waiting lists as long as they are, cancer, heart disease and diabetes care being very expensive, the point is to choose when the cost is paid.”
Mike Graham is not sure that giving people £400 to lose weight, effectively giving them money to correct something that they could correct themselves, is ‘the right thing to do’.
He says: "A lot of people don't think obesity is a disease like cancer.”

I'll buy that it's a mental illness, but saying it's a disease is insulting to people with actual diseases.

If you locked someone with terminal cancer and someone morbidly obese in an underground bunker for 3 months with nothing but water to drink. Who would emerge and who would die?

If people die early because of obesity 😮 doesn’t that save a fortune in state pensions, plus they pay extra money for their food , so just leave people alone , be smokers, drinkers next 🙄

... is what someone who doesn't understand the insane cost of healthcare would say. Treating someone who is going to die from preventable illness, all the way until their death, already outweighs savings in state pensions. Not to mention that some of those people dying are still of working age

@imbonkers3629 but if someone who is working age dies then you lose the extra tax revenue they would have generated
