Hello Lars. I don't know much about the diffirences between OBJ and STL files, but as far as I know 3D printers only works on g-code. Your slicing software takes the OBJ or STL and converts them to g-code.

If your slicer does not accept .obj files, you can convert an .obj file to an .stl file. That way you you are not limited by your slicer. Great video! The Tsplines tool is awesome! Thanks!

hey mate, how do I convert it to stl in maya?

.OBJ files can contain groups (which each imported as a body in your example), can contain triangles or quads, have mapping for wrapping images on each group (texturing) and also have normals, which are perpendicular outward facing vectors that can be tweaked for smoothing. Autodesk has several powerful products (Maya and 3DS-Max for two) for working with these, including quadrangulation functions. They are outside the price range of hobbyists however.

That's an extremely useful tip! Great for low poly quad meshes from 3D packages (Blender, Maya...) that need special treatment (e.g. precision features like screw holes...) from Fusion 360.

wow, I never knew what the difference was, that would make 3d printing and tweeking a lot faster, I wonder how many other printers will take and obj file, because that wouyld be over looked until some one sees this, thanks a lot, now time to get this to groups

So I just ran into a bug with OBJ. when I made a jug design I used a sphere to cut an indent in the side, when I exported in OBJ that sphere was a full object. But when I exported in STL the sphere wasn’t a problem. And now I am only using STL. Also I used fusion360 to design that jug.

Did you accidentally selected one part and exported with selected only

Thanks for the info about .obj files .I sure will remember this another time when i have to deal with .obj :-)

We should not even talking about stl or obj, there is already 3MF (3D Manufacturing Format) that Autodesk insists on not implementing in Fusion360.
Btw, Autodesk is also a founding member of the 3MF consortium.

Here is a link I found to the sword files if anyone is interested. You do have to create an account to download the file(s)

Hi Lars i have a tricky thing that i wanna machine but i am not getting it right is there any way you could try it and give us all a tip as to how you did it.. like a walk through.
its one component and one tool ( t slot cutter) but it has to spiral down the profile and it does not wanna... ive tried almost everything.. SOS... LOL

It’s a shame that the only tools I can locate that converts STLs to OBJ quads is from Autodesk Remake used t be free but now is consumed into recap photo

And 3MF wins over OBJ. It can store scale, and plenty more. I wish STL was gone already.
